panther question

Spare track links: either / or (sometimes both) carried on hangers on the turret sides, to be used as replacements for damaged ones (mine damage, etc), or welded on to "exposed" surfaces as additional armour protection.

Panther turret sides were notoriously thin, comparatively. I guess the Germans figured if they've got to hang spare track links somewhere it might as well be there. The armor enhancement was marginal but sometimes marginal was enough to make a difference. Especially since the Russian were still throwing 45mm at them throughout the war.
