Patgarret
How do you guys get your units in coherent groups? I mean hq with their units and their support...in a big mission like the russian first one (in which u have a ton of units) it could be a mess and units can easily drift far away from their hq... thanks!
Nidan1
The easiest way is to turn on the Command Line hot key, and either leave it on (which can get messy) or occasionally turn it on to see if your men are in command. You can also double click on a unit and light up other units related to its direct HQ. In the heat of battle units will drift out of command, its constant alertness by you that will keep them together.
Patgarret
Thanks Nidan! It really helped out! Though I have to say that giving the player a first mission of the campaign just out of the tutorial with so many units seems a pretty strange design decision...not everybody is a seasoned CM player...
Nidan1
Maybe if you started with one or two of the smaller scenarios before jumping right into the campaign would give you some time to master the mechanics of play with smaller formations.
YankeeDog
If you are a new player, I would advise NOT tackling the full campaigns right after you've finished the training campaign. The campaigns are really designed for intermediate to advanced level players. Campaigns also involve larger considerations like force preservation that aren't as significant in one-off scenarios so it's better to learn how to play individual battles well, and then tackle campaigns. Play some of the scenarios first, starting with smaller ones and working your way up to larger ones. You'll enjoy the campaigns much more this way.
Patgarret
Thanks guys, I used other games' assumptions... I will tackle some scenarios first
Felix_45
After getting your feet wet playing scenarios against the AI I suggest that you try playing against human intelligence. That is where the game really shines.
MikeyD
Another simple step to keeping everyone together is when issuing orders you double click the leader so everyone in command is selected together. Then when you plot waypoints they'll move as a group. Just make sure, though, that everyone's close together and you're not inadvertently movie a stray unit on the far side of the map. A common goof is selecting a HQ and accidentally selecting everyone under him too. Then you make a waypoint move and see a whole platoon (or company) up and walk in that direction.
db_zero
As others have said avoid the temptation to jump in and fight the big battles if you're not familiar. There are multiple layers/games in CM. Tiny, small, medium, large and huge battles. The bigger battles is not only about the tactical side of things, but also the Operational Art of battle. Movement to contact, probing, deception and a wide array of other factors come into play.
