kohlenklau
I am trying to get squared away on what a luftwaffe greatcoat should look like in late 1944. I mistakenly thought it WOULD have a luftwaffe eagle on it. Further googling and looking at some of my books says, "nope, no eagle." I mistakenly thought it would NOT have shoulder epaulets. Now I see it seems to "yes, it had shoulder epaulets" I guess they did away with the collar insignia in 42 or 43. In CMFI GL, the heer and luftwaffe seem to share the same greatcoat images. I thought at least I had it right that the luftwaffe greatcoat color was a blue-grey versus Heer feld-grau. Greatcoat grognards front and center, the spotlight is yours. Please.

Please. lol, our research meshes, Phil. From what I've seen since we talked yesterday, and digging through a bunch of earlier research, in combat I don't think even the color is that much different. staff and other rear-area officers seem to have rank collar tabs on blue-gray greatcoats, but the troops have no rank or even shoulder tabs (mostly), and they all seem to be a rather homogenous dirty grey.
Sublime
Wouldnt that make sense though? Similar to US troops removing rank insignia at the front?
kohlenklau
Sublime, It doesn't correlate to that in my opinion. Unless someone shows me otherwise, I always think of the German troops as wearing their medals, ribbons, rank badges, assault badges, all their trinkets into battle. And even when they developed the camo smocks, jumpsmocks, etc. the heer and luftwaffe FJ had rank patches on the upper sleeves. Specifically for this luftwaffe greatcoat, I am unsure as to what it should look like. Maybe I will drop the mixed FJ and LW with grteatcoats and instead pull in the luftwaffe field division 3/4 length camo combat jacket? With gloves, it could look wintery enough. You listening mark? breaker breaker 1-9, you got your ears on good buddy? Is anybody into that CB stuff anymore? Maybe just truckers?
