[WIP] Luftwaffe Infantry

Recommended Posts

Love the Feldblau! Maybe a little lighter on the Tan and Waters?

Yeah, I thought of that, but I've seen several pictures of authentic gear that's darker than you would think. Still, I'm open to being convinced to go lighter. I see lots of picture of reenactors with pretty light colored tan and water camo.

Nothing is set in stone yet.

The toughest thing so far has been the leather straps. The Luftwaffe had a different LBE rig from the Heer.

EDIT: Check out this one, for example:

Not sure if re-enactor uniforms are a good example. Don't they tend to be clean and more museum quality?

I had no problem with the darker Tan and Waters since they would be really dirty after seeing action, rain and mud. If anything, I thought the blue tinge of the other uniforms to be a (little) bit too pronounced. Once cloth gets very dirty, I doubt if much color is seen.

I found a fair number of reenactor pics and most of their Tan and Water jackets do look lighter as Splinty suggests, but on the other hand they also look cleaner as you say. My interpretation (and I could be wrong) is that the lighter color is a combination of cleanliness and pigment fading over time. The tie-breaker was to look at some "authentic" colors used for paints for miniatures. Those are -- one would hope -- based on something solid like factory specifications. They seem to support the theory of darker tan.

The problem with images on the net is how to guarantee that something you see is an authentic piece and not a reproduction. Even in the link I posted I have no way of knowing whether or not that jacket is the real thing.

Yes, you have a point there. I haven't tried adding anything like mud splotches yet either.

I can tell you though that a few of the pics of feldblau items I found are quite impressively blue and not much grey. A sort of slate color seems to be the norm.

Just a notice that I plan on releasing a preliminary version of these uniforms...soon. Within the next few days I would think. I work slowly and in spurts, so I figure there's no reason to wait until I get them completely A+, 100% finished when feedback is good, and they're perfectly usable already.

BTW, they look substantially better than the old screenies, I think.

Very nice work! Can't wait to see it released!

Couple notes if I may:

- Blue looks good, maybe a bit too blue - but photographs of original items can and will be misleading depending on lighting, camera setup and how your screen is set up (if you look for digital pictures). I guess it comes down to taste after all.

- Your tan-and-water is extremely dark. ll pictures of supposedly orignal items I've seen so far are much lighter also some were pretty dark (but still much less than your first run). To pleasethe masses I suggest going for something like this:

Collectors agree on these being genuine.

In the end it comes down to personal taste as well but if you have taken alook at original items you'll most likely notice a pretty wifde variety in colors and brightness depending on a multitude of reasons - your choice.

Personally I'd rather have it brighter.

I agree with you on these points and I think you'll be happy with what the new ones look like. I spent quite a bit of time trying to decide about this. I tried to find color pictures of soldiers in the field and examine how the wear and tear affected their uniforms, and my conclusion was that the longer the uniforms are in action, the more the color fades toward the color of dirt. Eventually everything ends up sort of dirt-colored.

I will reiterate though, that I've found a few pictures of (clean) Feldblau items that are really, really strikingly blue with only a hint of grey. I think there was considerable variation. I've noticed a lot of reenactors have tan & water items that are very light...almost straw colored. I still think those are faded and too clean. The picture you posted seems about right, but I've found several that are darker than that too, plus there's the dirt to be considered.

Anyway, it shouldn't be too long. I might have had it done today, except that my neighbor got his 18-wheeler stuck in a muddy field and I spent some time helping to get him out! Heh.

When will you release that Pak? Looks interesting...

That's actually just Aris's superb PaK texture made quite a bit darker and a bit more brown. I generally like my heavy metal dark.

While I was researching the luftwaffe uniforms, I also noticed that, at least in the west, lots of German equipment had green and brown painted over the factory sand color. I found plenty of pictures of PaKs, Panzerschrecks, mortars, and vehicles that were mostly or even all green. That's been a little side project of mine, making less yellow and more green and brown because it fits the terrain.
