Hilts
Are 75mm on map infantry guns designed for indirect fire? I've got the gun dug in on a reverse slope with it's Co HQ alongside (with radio). Trying to instigate indirect fire from an observer is almost impossible. Whole areas that are clearly in LOS of the observer are not eligible for indirect fire from this gun. I just get the red circle with the line through when trying to plot area or point fire. I don't think it's a minimum range thing.
MikeyD
Yep, it can be done. German radio protocol seems to be rather unforgiving, though. And the gun's got to be capable of hitting the target too. The rounds got a slow arcing trajectory but its not a mortar. Its still got to be able to clear intervening ground.
Sergei
Are you possibly behind a building? That can also prevent fire from a mortar or a howitzer.
akd
You don't have line of fire from the gun; either the target is within minimum range of the gun or something is blocking the path of the shell from gun to target (e.g. that slope you are behind).
Hilts
Thanks for your answers. It sounds like the most logical explanation is terrain blocking the trajectory of the shell. If this is the case though wouldn't the gun fire anyway and simply hit the terrain (being on the reverse slope prevents the gunners from seeing the terrain) or does the AI take over and prevent the gun from firing and wasting ammunition? Just out of interest, do we know what the minimum range is for the gun in indirect fire?
MikeyD
I recall awhile ago planting a shell right in front of the gun playing with indirect fire mode. But its been a long time since I tested it. Mortars have a minimum range because you simply can't angle the barrel 90 degree and fire a round straight up.
Sakai007
Funny, this morning I read here about mortars not being able to fire from behind buildings and I say, "huh, never seen that before" and then I start a game and a while into it, I go to request a fire mission and what do ya know??? My mortar can't fire cause LOS is blocked by a house, awesome!!!!

Well, no more than the once.
Sergei
Bah, a proficient mortar gunner is able to send a shell directly up, then put a second one to follow it so they collide and explode mid-air!
