Probably.. I've heard of people marching them through minefields to get rid of them. But then again whats the point? They're worth more points alive anyways (no pun intended) But if you wanna get rid of them you may be able to target them (never tried) or you can just do an area target.. or you could just get a single squad member, split a squad, or maybe some left over tank crew?

Mods can screw up a game I agree.. but they can also help a lot. Of course this doesn't seem to apply to CM since it is excellently made but if you had a game.. say Close Combat mods are the only thing to save it.. CC3 sucked but realred and westfront helped a lot..

I played as germans, full fog of war, default scenario setup, no advantages either side.. on the first day I lost the town you were supposed to defend, both panthers and a bunch of pillboxes. I knocked out at least 10 allied tanks and killed many infantry though. That night I pulled back into defensive positions near the main town, and used one of the reinforcing squads with a STuG to attack into the town, I took the last three buildings in the town and held them.. no casualties.. The second day the Americans assaulted again, but with fire support from a 120mm mortar spotter, and bravery of my squads we held out, and destroyed several tanks and halftracks. Lost a stug though. That night Many reinforcements came in like Wespes and infantry, and I managed to infiltrate my infantry into the town I had lost during the first day.. the Allies didnt even know I was in until a Stug I had advanced up to a crossroads started firing into the rears of some Ami troops. They assaulted the town but didnt get anywhere and 105mm fire pounded their troops in the woods. No casualties..
On the next day, I massed all my armor including the new Mk IV's and the Tiger i received and launched a general attack. Over the course of the battle I lost most of my tanks including my Tiger, 2 Mk IV's, a Stug, and my Jagdpanther.. But I also crippled the Amis destroying the very last of their Armor and forcing their infantry into a pocket... They shortly thereafter surrendered...

    Allies
    301 Casualties (140 KIA)
    1 Captured
    3 Mortars Destroyed
    41 vehicles knocked out

    Men Ok:110

    Axis
    72 Casualties (29 KIA)
    8 pillboxes knocked out
    11 Vehicles knocked out

    Men ok: 295
    Axis Total Victory

Hey dumbo good job! I played it last night as the Germans.. the Germans suprise was a good touch and it saved the battle for me, fairly tough fight and i love the map put together and the force balance was really good.. though i think the British may be a bit weak...
Only problem I noticed was the squad specific names in the briefing? I knew which squads you were talking about by location, but I think the squads you chose in making it had one set of names, then the game randomized them or something whenever someone else plays...?

Do I have to make an original post to be found by this thing? Please help.

In the first version of this I also forgot to mention that the reply counter apparently has a glitch. My query regarding artillery tweaks showed no replies on the box for that, but there WAS a reply. Something's wrong here somewhere.

For some reason page 2 of this thread doesn't follow the standard format and overflows my screen, requiring the annoying use of the drag bar to read each individual line.

Is something wrong with the page format settings? Usually everything displays in such a way that I can read it without chasing text past my normal viewing field.

4TheFront reacted to John Kettler in Jabo Jumpy Now, But Have Some Technical Questions
I just remembered the other item I wanted to mention. That is that the available film footage I've seen of bomb drops shows that most of debris goes up (not out) in a fairly acute cone, thus confirming the blast and frag masking I described in my initial post.

My apologies for the typo in the first post.

4TheFront reacted to John Kettler in Jabo Jumpy Now, But Have Some Technical Questions
Having seen the horrific potential of Jabos in the recent CMHQ special, I have a few questions and comments.

    1. How does CM model blast and frag damage from an aerial bomb?

From what I can see, it looks like some sort of cookie cutter radiating outward uniformly from the explosion. As I recall from my military analyst days, though, a bomb delivered from low level (not vertical dive or medium/high level horizontal) doesn't arrive vertical to the ground and i tends not to go off until it's some distance into the ground (unless fuze extenders are used), thus masking much of the explosion and removing a considerable portion of the casing fragments from play as well.

These factors being the case, I would expect that the worst orientation vs. the bomb for a target to be in would be perpendicular to the bomb's longititudinal axis. This would put the target in both the densest part of the fragment pattern and on the primary blast axis as well. I would expect that the area in front of the bomb's nose would be relatively safe, while the area behind the bomb would probably not be a major frag hazard, caused by narrow shape discharging upwards, but would be from the standpoint of blast, considering the bomb's tail is almost certainly out of the ground at detonation.

Also, as I recall, blast falls off very rapidly as a function of distance (forget exact mathematical relationship), while shell and bomb fragments, some quite large, have been known to travel hundreds of yards and do all kinds of damage to men and materiel.

Taken in aggregate, the issues I've raised would appear to argue strongly against the bomb explosion pattern as depicted in the special scenario on CMHQ. I would further argue that crater evidence tends to support this view, in that even Army manuals show artillery craters as being oval, while mortar craters tend to be more circular, the result of a more vertical delivery angle. A bomb would be hitting at an even shallower angle than tube artillery does, thus accentuating this oval aspect in the crater.

1a. How detailed is the CM bomb blast/frag model when it comes to representing and properly distinguishing the effects of the factors I've described above?

    2. Though the article mentions 2.75" rockets, the ones which the British used with such devastating effect from their Typhoons were not 2.75s but 60 lb. rockets (warhead weight), something much nastier. Remember that a rocket doesn't have to undergo the 100,000 G load that a cannon shell does. Its HE fill percentage is therefore much higher than an equivalent weight artillery shell, so for a given warhead weight, the rocket puts much more HE on target than does the shell.

Which rocket is CM modeling, and what are its warhead details?

Seems like there's another question, but I'll post later if I think of it.

    Regards,

    John Kettler

4TheFront reacted to Sublime in Zala Capabilities
it is in qbs. but quick battles are more to test opponents ability. and its only banned because it cannot be shot down at all.  This is different than say nerfing US equipment for balance, or whatever. Its a house rule to make QBs fair. Not balanced because one side still uses Russians and the US still gets all it stuff. But just like you could say not buying all super heavy artillery anr CAS and preplotting strikes on your opponents setup zone is  doing balance its really just to ve fair. If zalas could be at least even shot at Id allow them.
I also generallly dont allow APS in my QBs. the US doesnt currently have APS and because this is a gamw that cant model a number of factors that in real life would help the Russians I see a great reliance on ATGMs and therefore prefer no side uses APS .
Regardles noones forcing you to not use zalas and you can play anyway you want. Just not against me.  You opened the thread for thoughts and discussion and I gave you mine.  No one is forcing you to do anything. And if in the future the game was edited so the Zala could be shot down like all other drones ( except gray eagle in observe mode iirc) than Id allow it in QBs. Since i play as Russians in 99.9% of all my QBs in BS its not hurting my opponents but me with the Zalas.  The no APS hurts them more than me because Javelins go right through Russian APS but I feel Abrams and Javelins more than make up for that issue ( the Russians have no fire ans forget ATGMs let alone top attack ones)
This however is how I play the game and in QBs against an other player. I also dont do attacks n assaults. In WW2 titles the defender against a himan is almost certainly doomed from the start and its more glaring in BS. instead i play probes that still do attack defense and give the attacker more points but not such a huge disparity.  I want qbs to tests of player skill but not artificial ones - i.e. I dont continue to play people who consistently cherry pick the very best trained and highest order equipment, use gamey tactics, or dont follow agreed upon house rules.

So Im not really sure what Im facing here. But the plan must seem obvious upon seeing the pictures.
    1. ID US target and win the armor battle.  I dont have ATGMs besides whats on the BMP2Ms and Khriz.   So skillful use of smoke will be my trump card for Khriz, and use of massed fire with my T90AMs, that and using cover as much as possible to engage US targets not in an open plain battle, but keyhole and weird LOS battles where I can focus as much firepower on individual targets as I can.
    2.  Use my remaining SU-25 to destroy any targets of opportunity it can see and I cannot
    3. Use the large amount of mortars and artillery along with my TRPs to utterly shell the bejesus out of suspected and ID'd US positions.  This is where planting BMP2Ms with infantry split squads in forests and having them sit is important. I dont need actual IDs - ?s are enough to warrant shellackings.
    4. The infantry near the buildings that also are near my armors main route of advance are to attempt to enter and occupy said buildings, gaining better LOS and supporting the armor from US infantry possibly hiding inside or nearby.  Priority must be given to Javelins as well. Units close to buildings or that can leapfrog to buildings will do so, even if I have to divert other platoons and funnel them through the one route open to the buildings.   That will work on my right flank, on my left they'll have to sit and wait for the situation to develop before becoming committed.
    5.  - This is open, again, being a QB and having no idea what Im up against I have to wait and see how the situation develops. As of now my smoke screen will allow me to emplace my units and when it dissipates I expect firing to begin immediately. My tank advance has all T90s in center clearing ending their rush with a pop smoke.  This will allow the Khriz a unique opporunity to fire on targets the US nor anyone else can see using their radar.

regardless you had a chance at force pic. any player should review his force ideas before then picks after the battle. barbed wire is almost useless especially in a qb. all those points could have bought extra teams. or possibly a formation. but since even in setup u can check los and u could see the entire or at least 3/4s of the entire map edge if you could have not gotten fortifications ans bought javs and some grenade launchers and hmgs. even with the crazy formation pick. as i told you privately i could have held off an entire bmp tac group qith t90am support with several jav teams a couple humvees with extra missiles and one or two bradleys or a single abrams and several jav teams with extra missiles. nothing else. maybe two scout teams as sacrificial lambs way forward to slow the russian infantry but i dont think itd be necessary with the bradleys and abrams killing them from turn 1 before they even get outta the setup zone. let alone wait for smoke barrage to arrive and build as mine did.

i believe the ban on filming coffins was out of respect and the military not wanting the press to become an enemy tool a la Vietnam. Casualtie figures down to wounded are regularly and openly printed in the West accidents too and have been the whole Iraq/ Afghan crap show. christ in the west going back to WW 1 Britain published ginormous casualty lists though I do believe after the Somme they pressured the press to lay off printing all the casualties at once...
