  1. You will need more than Soviet equipment/TOE to describe communist force. KPA's armor force is built with Soviet equipment and Soviet TOE, but the infantry division's organization is very similar to IJA, Imperial Japanese Army .  the CPVA (Chinese People's Volunteer Army) in 1950 and 1951 were largely armed with Japanese equipment, some were armed with captured American equipment, while the rest armed with Chinese made equipment.

So to describe a CPVA platoon, you will also need Japanese equipment, ZB26,  type 24 Zhongzheng (this one should be relatively easy to mod, this is a copy of Gewehr 98)

  2. Be aware of Tunguska.

I haven't played scenario "Cry Havoc", but I can understand your frustration. I had a PBEM on Rolling Thunder (?) . The redfor's Tunguska shot down my two UAVs in the first min, while It takes my 8 rounds of stinger to shot down the redfor's UAV :) .

I realized that I got to knock out that Tunguska before I sent my two Apache. And next 50 min became a "hide and seek" game between me and my opponent. I  made several Jav teams and FO teams infiltrate the front line, try to get a lock on that Tunguska. My opponent is cunning, he constantly move Tunguska every couple min. So my artillery PGM, barrage missed his Tunguska. And he was moving like a ghost, Jav team cannot get a lock.  Finally my M1 put a 120mm on Tunguska, but it was almost at the end of the game.

    Hello everyone,

A long time ago I took JuJus CMBN interface and made it for Fortress Itally by adding the missing mod files for vehicles, weapons, etc. Well, I just finished updating it again to include everything for Rome to Victory. Compressed, it's 7MB. I just posted it to onedrive.

Please feel free to distribute or host this file wherever. The majority of the credit all goes to JuJu. I just ported it to CMFI and updated it as needed.

    Hi Audgisil

The link doesn't work anymore, is there any other place I can download this file?

    Thank you so much

  4. That's weird , BTR has Airburst HE, it should be able to cause some damage to the Inf in the foxhole

Yes, it is a very very hard scenario. You have very limit resource and limit option. Sending the tanks lead the charge will guarantee a firework caused by Jav. Make the BTR go first , they will be destroyed by either Jav or 25mm autocannon. Sending Inf first is the best option, but you got to be very careful about terrain. With even one tiny mistake they will be cut down by 25mm , MG and XM25.

I took the dirt road, 1st Plt took the dirt road that directly goes to the village, recon plt went through orchard. After ID Bradley's position, 1st Plt halt, Plt leader share the information with every T-72 and BTR. Then around Turn 20, I have all AFVs leap forward a short distance from 3 different position, all pointing to the Bradley. Bradley took 2-3 30mm and reverse. That is a good thing and bad thing. AI won't send AFV back to pervious position so that gives my Inf freedom to move. But I lost a very good chance to kill Bradley. Anyway during the fire fight, I lost two BTR in the fire fight but able to ID one Jav team . Area fire next turn guarantee that Jav team is out of action.

Then I reverse all AFV back, took the dirt road through orchard. My battle formation fully deployed at wheat field, Inf cross the dry riverbed and take the village building.  Lost one BTR to the 2nd Jav team

Time for the last push,  I sent the rest of 2 tanks, 2 BTRs and all RPG gunner to the hill on the left. Then try to engage Bradley simultaneously. Unfortunately Bradley put his Rambo headband on. He put my 3 RPG team out of action first, then knocked out one T-72. The T-72 ammo cook off kills the BTR next to it.  Fortunately , the T-72 HQ took the revenge, kill Bradley. And then the time is running out.

it is a pity , with a few more point I will have minor victory.

I guess I better play Brutal next.  I was going most in order smallest first but skipped a few to try to improve my US faction skills.  I got a total victory -- except I added a 4 vehicle scout platoon in scenario editor, so yes, I cheated.  I'll play Brutal straight up and see how badly I get whupped.  I've gotten a mix so far of wins, losses and draws.  Like forgetting to dismount my Stinger team and watching helplessly as four strykers get brewed up in less than 2 minutes.  Ooops.  Turns out the Russians know about airplanes.

Chibot, thanks for the tips on IR vs non-IR smoke.  You are in China?  I hope you are stable to stay safe & healthy.  Here in US we are still not peaked I think.

I wonder if they will ever have a CM People's Army game?  That would be interesting.  China vs Taiwan?  Amphibious landings, Chinese vs mostly US gear?

Thank you danfrodo, hope you stay safe & healthy too.  I am a Chinese but now I am living and working in Michigan ( of course, work from home right now :) ). So far my county is OK.

Yes, it would be great to see PLA in the future CM game. But I guess PLA Pixeltruppen got to wait behind a long line of wish list, wait for CM North Africa, Vietnam, Pacific, Middle East and Fulda Gap come out first .

Also, Chinese military experienced a dramatic transformation in last 20 years. It's going to be a PITA for BFC to study PLA's OOB.

Me too.....Same scenarios, same order (same result in 'Brutal').  ;)

    That is a great honor

In fact about scenario Brutal! , after defeated by AI, I asked two PBEM game to play ask UKR.

No doubt the first one was a defeat

But the second one, with enough knowledge on the map, good planning and a little bit of luck,  plus my opponent was a little of reckless.

    I lead Ukraine 1st Bn/17 Bde  into a glorious victory  :)

So can I see through smoke as US player?  are those thermal sights by soldiers have?  I am on my ~6th or 7th battle now, playing Phase Line Green + cheat -- meaning I gave myself extra resources via scenario editor before I started.  Had a very tough battle in previous and am hoping for an easier time.  by cheating.

My problem is those Russian LAVs w the 30mm man-shredding guns.  I've got one on reverse slope but how can I approach to get a AT missile shot?  I could blind it w smoke, move up, then shoot before he sees me if my sights are thermal.

it depends on what kind of smoke.  In the game, most of the smoke generated from AFV are IR-Blocking smoke. Smoke screen generated by Artillery is not IR blocking

I did some testing scenario before

I guess even IR-blocking smoke can be helpful. You can have ATGM run into position, wait for smoke dissipates. With TI you will spot him first.

Besides smoke, you can use the combo of "Target Armor Arc" and Hunt command, slowly move forward for establish vision contact.  Or slowly crawling into the postion

  8. Same here.

I found the only one that can pickup SMG is the one with pistol.

I think for the WW 2 title ,the game treat SMG, Bolt Action rifle, Semi-auto rifle and ATR as same tier weapon.  So a Soviet rifleman cannot pickup PTRS-41 , a German Leader with MP40 cannot pickup G43.

Rifle with scope, MP44, Bazooka , panzerschreck and LMG are tier one weapon with high priority to be picked up, they can be picked up by a rifleman or SMG gunner.

Flamethrower cannot be picked up by anyone

hey folks, I just picked up CMBS + battle pack -- I was inspired by Bud Backer's excellent comic book series today.  I have experience in all the WW2 titles but also in SF2, so a little modern warfare under my belt.  After any tutorial stuff, where do y'all think a new player should go?  I want to avoid the nastier battles until I get a feel for what I'm doing.  These modern weapons look truly terrifying.

My first one was "Ambush", a tiny fun scenario at slow pace.

the 2nd one was a bad choice, "Brutal!", I was humiliated by AI

3rd one was "Galloping Horse Downfall"

After WW2 simulations, CMBS was sure an eye-opener. No longer was it fairly safe to hide in some shrubs... thermal sights FTW! ;)

CMBS present a modern battlefield that is deadly, brutal and unforgiven .

An important lesson from CMBS is "Do NOT stay at the same place for more than 1 min!" .  And if you are facing US Army, then you got to update it to "Don't sit at the same place fore more than 15 seconds!"

  10. it is a little bit of frustration to see the Rus/Ukr 's IFV don't carry UGL ammunition.

Rus/Ukr infantry squad has two AK74+GP25, issued to squad leader and assistant squad leader. Each one has 10 rounds of VOG-25. It could be depleted in a two min fire fight. Then there is nowhere to find extra ammo except from some trucks.

American can get their UGL ammunition from a HUMVEE!  So, I really hope the next update can add VOG-25 to BMP/BTR's ammo stocks.

  11. “hunt” in CMx2 is very similar to “contact” . So it is an attacking order, an order looking for trouble.

On operational level, attacking costs a lot of fuel, ammunition, make personal and equipment exhaust fast. A mechanized formation can move at 30-45km/hr on a road in friendly territory, but as soon as it gets into Indian country, the road marching speed can be reduced to half. Same rule can be applied to tactical level. Your infantrymen ready their weapons , slowly advance, and the squad leader just told everyone “Keep eyes open, there are VC everywhere!” . It makes a human being physically and emotionally exhaust very fast.

Maybe you should accept the fact that the “hunt” is slow, then the question is how to effectively do the recon.

Of course “recon by death” is favored by a lot of people including me. Split a two men team and send them forward. Make sure they don’t take away your precious SMG/LMG/Panzerfaust/RPG. After they cut down by enemy fire, you know there is trouble ahead waiting for you.

Yepp, I can agree on some exahaustion - but not much, as it is now it is borderline riddicolus. I have actually almost stop using Hunt mode, only in very specific situations. Splitting up squads into fire teams and leapfrog them using regular move mode is better, because then they do not get exhausted and still have good enough fire readiness with in the squad.

I am also using another method which is very similar to yours, split the formation into several teams. But I will use “Hunt” order.

Hopefully this excel sheet makes everything clear.

I borrowed the idea from operational level wargames like TOAW / WITE. Basically a spearhead is taking the lead , the main body following will take less risky route and less MP(movement point) on the road. Then the next turn the spearhead rest and refit, another unit leap forward and take the lead.

  12. Well, it's a little bit of exaggeration. But one year ago if someone told me he could land 6 rounds of laser guided 152mm on 6 different targets in 20 min I would laugh at this idea.

    Now...

    9ppH8bP.png

T+1 min:  UKR FO requested one round of 152mm PGM on the right most BTR. It will take 7 min to make 1st round PGM land on target.

    iWgU7Ap.png

T+6: Now here is the key.  5 min later,  when the art panel status changed to "Preparing", it is time to click "adjust fire". I called the fire on the left most BTR. Click confirm, then wait for 2 more min

    R3U1l8e.png

T+8:  2 min later, the FO guided first round of 152mm PGM and it hit the right most BTR.  At the same time, the 2S19 Plt is preparing to fire on the left most BTR, which was targeted by adjust fire 2 min ago. Now it is time to adjust it again.       I adjusted the fire on to a MTLB

    keHdQoA.png

T+10, 2 min later. 2nd rnd PGM killed the left most BTR, arty plt is preparing to fire on the new target --- MTLB, and I click adjust fire again to call a new round onto a BMP......

I will repeat this procedure until the 2S19 plt expend all 6 rounds of PGM

    itiN11t.png

T+20, all 6 rounds PGM expended, killed 6 different AFV targets.

separate specialist teams can't aquire own special ammunition from other vehicles. AGS-17 team can't take no one genade from any BTR-4 except "parental" of own section/platoon, which contains this ammunition for aquiring.

that's weird. it works for me

    ZXibfie.png

the AGS-17 team is from 2nd Bn, they have no trouble to take grenade from 1st Bn's BTR-4E

Infantry often won't shoot in dense terrain. I have an idea why this happens:

The infantry squad is not split. It consists of two teams. The squad has a solid spot and a grey target line to an enemy team 80m away.

Here's the interesting bit: The infantry squad will not open fire on its own. BUT if I select "combine squad", the LMG gunner immediately opens fire.

So there is some kind of issue or bug at work here. A "hand brake" that keeps squads from reacting to contacts if they are not split and if only part of the squad spots the enemy.

For issue like this , it is because a squad will take two action spot. The squad leader in team A has a clear LOS on target but the LMG gunner in team B sit on adjacent does not.
