  1. Count me in the camp that has seen what I could swear was a bit of bracketing going on before seeing solid hits. Don't get me wrong, I've also seen plenty of first shoot hits with various results but I sure am not seeing anything I'd term 'robotic' or anything I'd confuse a modern MBT with. We need to keep in mind as others have said that we have one sample as of right now to draw conclusions from and while I wouldn't say it's down to knife fighting range these aren't what I'd call long term gunnery duels.

Those Marders btw are plenty effective as well. My first go I didn't lose a one and they did quite a number on the Shermans if you keep them in teams of two or three. One or two may miss but three of them working in a group on one target makes for lopsided fights. :P

  2. Reminds me of what we would do to the noobs that'd report for the first time to the motor pool. We'd give them a hammer and tell them to check for soft spots on the Sheridan so they'd proceed to walk around it tapping on it and intently listening for something akin to a hollow spot. It never got old. :P

...which ties into there are no soft spots in an AFV relative to a human body.

  3. I tend to agree that crews seem to be too immune to shock. However, I admit that I may be using CMx1 as a guide-post for behavior in CMBN. And the question is, which is more accuarate?

I used to be involved in a Great Battles class in college where I taught The Battle of the Atlantic. In the course I met many veterans and heard many stories. A couple points follow:

    1. I was told that when American tank crews went up against German armour that they couldn't kill (ie Sherman vs Tiger) the Americans usually fired HE for the shock/spalling effect. They hoped to rattle the crew to the point where they became basically ineffective. That gave them a chance to maneveur for a better shot or to "Get the hell out of there!".

    2. Heard a German tanker tell this story (short version): His tank platoon (4 Panthers) got into a fur-ball with some Shermans (not sure how many but probably 10-12). By the end of the fight they had 2 Panthers left but had knocked out 6 or 7 of the Shermans. He said it was during this fight that he knew Germany had lost the war. Why? He said he didn't think that it would be possible to beat an enemy that "would shoot from a burning tank".

There are many imponderables in war. A rifle bullet passing by a TC's head may cause that tank to run while another crew might be operating in a basically berserk state. And there is no sure measure for who will do what. All reason goes out the window when the bullets and shell are flying...

Just points to ponder. And a real PITA to code for CMx2 ;)

    Loving the game!

Regarding the last paragraph I played Busting the Bocage last night and I found a lot of what you said in the last paragraph pretty spot on imo. I lost 3 Shermans to shreks (I've learned to dread the sound of them firing...again) and in addition had one immobilized due to errant arty and another Sherman with just about everything knocked out due to multiple hits from a shrek as well. I witnessed all sorts of crazy behaviour from my crews and found all of their actions very plausible. By the time I won a total victory due to a German surrender the whole company was in a nervous state and this was reflected in tanks reversing pell mell by just machine gun fire bouncing off them. It was very hard in the later stages to mount effective bounds forward because it didn't take much to rattle troops to include infantry. Oddly enough none of my tank losses came from the Paks

  4. Not to worry... we stopped tweaking things for the release last week. Instead we're working on v1.01. And before v1.01 is released we'll start working on v1.02. So on and so forth :D If we held up for a perfect release we'd still be working on CMBO and none of you would have yet played it!

    Steve

That's great news to hear, thanks for clarifying.

  5. Oh man, please oh please...like really please don't tell me you're gonna hold onto the game for another couple of days for the tweaking stuff :( I'd rather see you guys do the fine tuning with a patch since I find this stuff plus a lot of other stuff posted to be relatively minor quibbles. If it was game breaking I can see holding it, but imo I've seen nothing that would warrant that, once again imho.

  6. 4 minutes does seem a bit long for a voice-communicated indirect fire call like the one you describe. Especially since full-out wirelessly communicated fire requests of on-map assets only take 4 minutes to get to fire for effect. There should be at least some advantage to not having to transmit all the information via wireless, especially 1940s era wireless.

But I wouldn't go all the way down to one minute. Keep in mind that the 4 minutes represents time to Fire For Effect, not time to first spotting round. And the spotting rounds take time to fire and adjust.

So the section leader shouts the bearing and range back to the mortar. Mortar crew dials this in, adjust the tube, sets the charge, and fires a spotting round. Then 8-20 seconds of flight time. Spotter observes impact, shouts corrections to mortar. Adjustments. Another spotting round. Then, if the round is more or less on target, Fire for Effect.

How long? I dunno. I'll buy less than 4 minutes for a trained team. But I don't think one minute. Maybe 2-3 minutes for voice-directed, vs. 4 minutes for wireless.

I'd agree as I have been thinking 4 minutes is a bit long for direct coms. Assuming everything is set up etc and they are under no pressure and they are experienced I'd think from sighting a target to dropping some effective rounds would take about 2 minutes maybe 3 at max. Maybe fng's would be 4 minutes I don't know but a well dialed in crew should be quicker imo with effective eyes on target.

  7. Oddly enough I have a source stating a bit the opposite. From The Encyclopedia Infantry Weapons of World War II (a book I've been reading a lot lately) on pages 110 and 111 for the Granatwerfer 36 I have the following-

"It is interesting to note that a trial of a captured 5cm mortar was conducted in Britain in 1941, and the report observed that it was, 'well constructed and easy to operate, but the degree of accuracy was un-necessarily high'. This must be one of the few times when a complaint has been voiced that a weapon was too accurate."

It goes on to note that the 5cm was mostly superseded by the GW34. It seems your reference speaks more about the actual ammo used which my source does not so I wonder if that is where the difference lies? Interesting nonetheless imo.

  8. I'm in the camp of if its something they can fix in a day or two, hold it and do the fixing. I don't want to wait any longer than 24-48 hours though as at this point I know they could release the game with no real problems and I've paid my money for it so I'd like it now please :) Patch for later so we can start the when's the patch coming out threads :P I understand they'd like to hammer out whatever niggling problems they've identified but tbh that's something that can go on forever and on this board you'll never please everyone. Hell, there are pages and pages going on about things that aren't even going to be in this game yet they still argue/debate about it.

So yeah, the sooner I can download full game the happier I'd be at this point. :)

  9. That is not the point, stop making excuses!

I sent a large infantry force over the low bocage, the area was clear, the Sherman would not cross the low bocage.

    It is a Glitch.

Stop making excuses for Real Problems.

The fanbois on this forum do more harm then good. If you don't know the answer stay out of the discussion.

If You don't work for BFC, don't answer for BFC.

Do not excuse away Real Game Problems with pseudo-history you Know Nothing about.

In Normandy in June-July 1944 M4 Shermans did indeed cross low bocage if it was proven clear and safe. Fact.

Good job coming across like a jerk if that's what you were attempting to do. Fact

  10. I am kinda surprised you guys didn't include that awesome briefing regarding all the extra info about bocages/tactics and so forth that was in the 'busting bocage' mission in the tutorial mission tbh. You'd have to mod it a bit (no rhinos etc) and sure its all in the pdf...but come on, who doesn't lick the icing of the cupcake first :P Sad truth is many who have no experience in this kind of patience game may not be prone to read the pdf and instead jump into the game and then get all butthurt when they can't figure stuff out. Most of them should be able to slug through the briefing at least before hitting the OK/GIMME NOW NOW NOW!! button and the ones who stick it out may be future wargamers/customers. :)

  11. Yeah, curious to hear about the whole prone verus kneeling thing myself. I was trained as a leg (11M) and I don't remember any special instruction on being told to shoot from the kneeling over prone due to body armour? If anything prone provides a better firing platform and reduced target for someone else to aim for, course you give up reduced LOS etc as well but hey life is full of compromises. So, was this just meant for a gameplay reason and if so why? I mean you do the 3 second rush a certain way and there was no kneeling involved in that either :P I have no clue how they trained the boots for WW2 so was this decision related to your knowledge on that maybe?

So there's no confusion where I am coming from, I have absolutely no beef with what you guys did btw, I am strictly just curious. Great game and a blast to play through the demo. :)

  12. Even though this game is by miles better in 'what you see is what you get' I believe there is still a certain bit of abstraction that goes into the game. Just because it looks like your guys can hurdle it (and I agree in that pic most people could probably clear it in a flying leap) doesn't mean they can in game. I mean the water in the game looks drinkable but I don't see any of my virtual soldiers topping of canteens either :)
