  1. Christmas Mini / CMBN for Mac here as well.

Nothing special about the install or patching that I recall.

    Mid 2011

    Mac OS X Version 10.7.2

    2.5 GHz i5

    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256MB

No issues with the install, or playing *most* battles (does barf on the 'School of Hard Knocks' in a campaign).

    In game settings:

    Sound: On

    Display: 1920 x 1080

    Vertical Sync: Off

    3D Model Quality: Balanced

    3D Texture QualitY: Balanced

    Antialias: Off

    High Priority: Off

    ATI Left-click: On

  2. OGSF??? Starting a thread no less... Ye canna fin' a sheep to abuse?

I remember him... "Oh God, Somethings F'ed"

Why don' ye take tha poor wee span'l an' stoof it in ye mooth and save us English speaking folk (even the 'English as a second language' folk in the forum fare better than you) from your poor baaaastardization of the English language.

There's a reason Siri doesn't work properly for the Scottish accent (and I use the term 'accent' loosely). It seems to have no problem with English, the Queen's English, German, or even French. So one must assume that the Scottish rank below even the French for recognition.

If ye canna follow tha' feckin' English, then ye canna sod off jus' lak' tha' SSNs.

    Criminey...

  3. A few days ago I bought Achtung Panzer: Operation Star

Oh, so that's what APOS stands for... for some of us, that acronym has a totally different meaning...

The damage model in AP is way better, at least visually. It actually has physics, which is standard in 2011. And decals! If a tank explodes, bits and pieces fall off (tracks, track guards, stowage, etc.)

While CMBN is superior in some effects (explotions), infantry combat and unit control, I find it less immersive.

    etc, etc, etc

I won't quibble the eye candy stuff. Yeah, that would be cool, but that's not why I would purchase a game.

I really wish there was more physics and eye candy in CMBN. It's almost 2012, so stop it with the single core 32x stuff. In the very least decals should be there.

Now that point about the physics part I find interesting. Knowing nothing about APOS, I find myself wondering how accurate the meaningful (read: not eye candy) physics portion of that game is. Do they account for all the factors that CNBM does? 3D slope effects, armor type, shell type, velocity (shatter gap anyone?), etc, etc. All the stuff that causes me to like CMBN.

But the game is too archaic for my friends. No MP (PBEM doesn't count, nor does the RT. It just sucks.), no physics, no AI (it has no real AI. **** you if you think it has.), poor optimisation, not modder friendly (changing skins doesn't count. BFC is all about the DLC now.), etc.

Well, not every game works for every type of person, as evidenced your friends lack of interest. I have 2 teenage sons who are Xbox crazy, but can't 'get into' CMBN. No fault of theirs, no fault of BFC.

And while I may be in the minority, I play WeGo exclusively. I don't care about modding (though I do like to use appropriate skins for the scenario or campaign), nor do I often play multiplayer games (although back in the IL2 days, we did have a squadron from the Peng Challenge thread that flew together - or tried to fly).

The whole notion that CMBN players can create their own scenarios and campaigns is fantastic, and a well crafted campaign with good scripting is a phenomenal thing to play.

Like you said, just being honest.

  4. WeGo vs RT might be related to "what you grew up with" to a certain degree.

I waited years for a PC to realize what I had wanted after sorting, playing, and generally moving hordes of cardboard counters on boards on a table with Avalon Hill games, and CMBO was just that. So WeGo it is, and still is as it suits what I want the best. RT/FPS just doesn't do it for me (have 2 teenagers who are clickfest happy).

Sure, for a while CloseCombat was fun (how many kills could you get with that MG42-equipped Kubelwagen before it got snuffed?), but didn't match my desire.

  5. Not sure it's the moniker I would have chosen (as I didn't), but welcome to the forums...

Best CM quote of all time:

"All the frustration of golf without all the exercise."

There are some scenario designers that are very, very good. Not just at designing a challenging scenario (or second battle of a certain campaign), but at finding ways to implement historical tactics for the AI. Did I mention that the Germans in defense typically registered their own fortification positions with artillery just in case they were overrun? Enjoy!

  6. Man, I remember in my early twenties I used to gamesmaster for a Tolkien RPG called MERP, the all night stoned arguments of why his Lvl 6 Scout got taken down by a lucky Orc arrow in the neck and then like the stone trolls in 'The Hobbit' we would realize it was approaching dawn and scurry back to our basement dwellings!

Come to think of it, I do remember seeing a couple of fellow RPG players fail their saving throws against a basilisk and ending up stoned... I think the GM had an ulterior motive that night, 'cause there were an awful lot of basilisks around for that adventure...

  7. and a robot chubbie.

Speaking of robots... Real Steel was fun, although I could have done with less people dialog and more robot bashing. Perhaps 7 minutes of dialog, and 120 minutes of robot fights, yes that would have been better. The story line? Meh, predictable, but the delinquent father's longtime girlfriend was easy on the eyes.

I think of Joe as the cobbled-together gorilla-looking robot from the 'Zoo' fight... yes, that was definitely Joe... nothing so cool as 'Noisy Boy', or 'Zeus', or even 'Twin Towers'.

  8. An additional scalp has been added to my belt in the form of another Nidan1 surrender.

It is not a scalp I wear proudly, I mean, I have so many of the damn things i've had to open 'Unca Stuky's used Nidan1 Pelt Emporium'. Business was brisk until customers complained of the mites, ticks and fleas associated with the scalps.

God, your cousins must be pissed at you!!!

(oh, and "Hi" Mean ol' Joe - "This Sig is for jooooo!)

  9. Let me see if I can translate this correctly...

Hairy O'breast ... I 'll make you a deal ... we'll do a Blood Hamster match, just you and me, ...

Translation: "Here herr_oberst, poke yourself in the eye with this pointy stick..."

If you win I'll officially take you to Squire and instruct you as I've instructed all my Squires

Translation: "And if you win, you get to poke yourself in the other eye with this pointy stick..."

Erm... no thanks. Although the the evil side of me is tempted to accept your challenge and simply proxy the turns off to Buzzsaw so that he can trounce you down into the mud.

Why would he accept? Well, for starters, he'd get to eviscerate the head of a competing House (I'm thinking House Atreides vs House Harkonnen here) and could make the truth known after the fact if he wins, and if he loses, well, I was the one playing you Old Foul Joe, wasn't I?

That kind of maneuver sounds, well, almost Rune-esque, doesn't it?

Aah, and back to the sig posting: Four times have I posted a la Hamster, and four times I have smitten thee...

  10. Argh, news of the day...

The vile forces of good (read Schmuzzsaw and House Rune) have prevailed over the vile forces of evil (read Joe Pshaw's hovel commanded (however poorly) by Herr Oberst) in an ugly nighttime armor duel.

He made use of all sorts of gamey force purchasing and utilized things like tactics, maneuver, and force concentration to smite my valorous hamstertruppen... soundly.

+1 to House Rune, and -1 to The Shaved House.

  11. Buzzsaw of House Rube is a gamey bastidge, equipping his armor with giant hedge clippers and such. You'd think he wants to win this skirmish.

First real contact has his little go-karts racing about putting tiny holes in my armor while my valiant panzertruppen are still recovering from too much schnapps... that must be the case because they obviously went to the Sgt. Schultz armor school, with their infamous motto "I see nothink!"

If this continues, these slow hand cranked turrets will be the death of the Shaving House... not that I mind of course. Anything to help lower the cause.

  12. Any suggestions? Or am I just in over my head? I think I'm using most of my capabilities (even popped some smoke). The AT guns keep knocking out my Shermans and I can't maneuver my infantry close enough to support without them getting pinned down and wiped out.

And I did play the old CM games (BO, BB, and AK), so I've got some feel of the usual tactics.

Smoke if you got 'em. Seriously, use the smoke to cover your advance of the armor.

  13. I am still reading this cr#p, but I am not sure why.

What I am not doing is playing enough CMBN. Marlow, if you are pinned by a large boulder, it is time to break out the pocket knife and free yourself. Don't worry if it is your head that is pinned -- removal would be a great improvement.

You are still reading this crap because I think you haven't quite grasped the concept of "movement" in CMBM.

You know, that's where you select a unit and tell it to move towards your opponent's likely positions.

True, true, your pixeltruppen did manage to get a shot at one of my units, but I think that is more a byproduct of their getting lost on the way to the latrine and just having some "good 'ol boy fun".

I'm about done with this "careful planning and tactical tweaking" they must beat into your squirrel brain with an old shoe over in House Rune... to borrow a phrase from your Allied limey friends... "Tally ho!"

  14. Damnable QA staff insisting that my twiddling the start dates of a process don't qualify as a true true test of the software when a recurring process spans days.. so here I sit Remote Desktopped to my machine at work Remote Desktopped to a server at work, just to watch a recurring process run across the midnight boundary. Bastidges!

I could instead be pouncing on Chainsaw's poor pixeltruppen who had the temerity to fire on the unter-shutzen I sent out in a kubelwagen on a Schnapps run to the local town.

You know, you can't just buff out those holes in the doors.

Ther'll be hell to pay for that one I tell you...
