  1. Most of what you said appears true. I messed up asking GAJ about the quad HT, but it appears he has no clue about Bil knowing it is out there. What I find more interesting is Bil is so sure that is what killed his HT's and that it didnt even fire. A little game fog of war going on here. But that is OK.

As to the fellow thinking Bil should not act on his scouting with non radio units. Good luch with that rule. You might be able to play that way with your brother, but one of the main facts of playing computer games is that you do not need to debate over the rules of the game because the program is the rule judge. whatever the game allows is normally acceptable. Now having some house rules can be had between players, but in general I find these have to be pretty basic and something that can be easy to judge as to if the other player is following by them rules. Like no 88's bought or no pre arty bombing of set up zones. But how would you ever know if the other guy was following your non radio scouting rule. Lets just imagine when he was sent on the scouting mission his commander gave him orders to send up flare signals to let him know if he spotted enemy units in certain sectors, ok. Now the whole situation is non - gamey, well not really. but it is a game, so really it will always be gamey no matter how hard you try to make it otherwise.

Yeppers. And how many sniper's ran about with radios strapped to their backs, hence radioing back to GaJ, "Hey I see X on the back side of the left tit." The limitations of the game apply to both opponents, so it's not as dreadful an issue as some are making it seem I think.

  2. Heh heh - I don't think Bil has a gamey bone in his body, he's a Military Man. Heck, he comes up the centre every battle, spurning the obvious gamey benefits of the flanks :)

Well, as I said, the Bunker Is Spotted incident caused a lot more LOSing around the map. This uncovered the fact that an MMG posted in a nearby building, supposed to be covering the Left Approach Valley is also exposed to Hill 130:

looks OK, unless you know what you're looking for. In fact:

Oh man! Those guys are quietly out of there, I can tell you :)

It was a while ago that I was not so gently 'reminded' of the "screen door" effect. From farther away, the screen quite effectively masks what's on the other side, but up close, there's all sorts of little holes to see through.

It's only half what you can see. The other half (who can see you) is equally, if not more, important. Always manages to bite me somehow when I'm trying to site a defense, but it's nigh on impossible to scout out every potential vantage point on a map.

  3. It could/should be a good fight. From GaJ's side, I'd think that at least a few AT mines to shut down the road at a convenient point. If not a kill from the mines, then at least slow the armor for a good measured flank shot from an ATG.

The AA HT absolutely has to be used in a shoot and scoot fashion. Pop up, blast away, then flee to reappear somewhere else. It won't last long parked anywhere. Bill's 120's are likely to score some devastating, if lucky, hits. Close counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and 120 mm mortars.

And as a final note, I really hope that GaJ's snipers account for 2 or 3 TC's. That would make life interesting for Bill.

  4. Just posted this over in GaJ's thread:

Thank you for providing us all such great entertainment while we wait for our chance to play CM:GL.

If I could get it past "she who must be obeyed", a Warstock would be well worth the investment. Play on good sir, and we'll just have to enjoy the education as it proceeds.

Oh, and remind me to NEVER play you in a QB. I don't think my gaming ego could take the beating.

  5. Since I first saw that map, I thought "what a b#$%^ to defend" given the possible routes of advance, and it doesn't look like the points available went that far...

All I can say is that if you've read up on any Soviet tactics, now would be the time to try to employ some "maskirova / masirovka / aw hell, deception" tactics to try and suss out Bill's intent before committing anything in force. That's a lot of undulating terrain to try and cover.

I'll keep my coulda/shoulda/woulda to myself, and just enjoy the DAR. Thank you (and Bill) for providing us all such great entertainment while we wait for our chance to play CM:GL.

  6. For the record; in principal I am OK with people who pre-ordered getting access ahead of everyone else. What makes me sad is that those of us that do *not* want hard good are not allowed be be part of the club.

Oh not to worry, some meathead who pre-ordered always comes on the forums and bleats out the URL, "Hey guys, look where I downloaded from!!!" and hoses up the experience for the rest of us, despite the fact that BFC states in the early warning email "Please don't post this URL."

  7. I would love that scenario designers, like Aris, put their superpowers doing simpler scenarios for beginners. For example, to learn combat tactics. How to move, how to cover, how the chain of command and artillery works, tanks use ... All this with clear and simple instructions and objectives, like, "Go up here, look for a couple of turns, cover in this area" etc. Scenarios designed to solve questions of the community and ignite debates about tactics and "tricks" for beginners like me ...

Ah! Another thing! What we will do without Bill Handerberger and GreenAsJade AAR?WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO MY GOD! ;-) So please, another AAR or some news about CMGL...Thanks and regards!

GL news? How about pre-orders are open.

  8. In the last 48 hours I:

    - Got up at 6 am

    - Went to 8 hour meeting near Stuttgart

    - Drove for 2 hours to Frankfurt airport

    - Flew for 13 hours to Singapore airport

    - Flew for 7 hours to Sydney airport

    - Flew for 2 hours to Adelaide airport

    - Slept.

    GaJ

Hmmph! By my count, that's 22 hours of AAR you could have been writing instead of eating bad airline food and watching trash movies on the airplane.

    Back to work slacker!!!

    :)

  9. If he's playing cat-and-mouse with the Shermans (now you see 'em now you don't), and you're inching along, are the odds too high that he will spot you while you have a good bit of terrain to cover yet?

Perhaps it's time for the gamey Zerg-rush. Throw caution to the wind. "Out of the trenches lads!" amid much whistle blowing, and all that rot.

Live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corps.. er, maybe not.

  10. On a map that convoluted, ATG's seem a silly waste of points. No-one in their right minds would setup on top of those barren mounts, and while keyhole opportunities might be good, manhandling into position would likely be a bear, and mobility looks dubious for towing if you need/decide to displace.

Seems like mobility is a key to this battle; with 1.5 hours and a variety of positions to overrun/occupy, I'm not sure a relatively static unit works in a cost/benefit analysis.
