Infantry Pathfinding-Tactical question
Childress replied to von Kleist's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Here we have an Ami team inside a bunker. I've given them a dismount order but notice that now the movement panel is blacked out: They exit the turn during the resolution phase at an unsatisfactory oblique angle depending on the axis (haha) of the German advance. You probably want to give them a perpendicular crawl and hide command but the game won't let you. This is an arguably more critical situation than the case of simple dismounting or bailing out a vehicle. Could this be due to the fact that the bunker is in an 'immobilized' state? -

Addendum: This technique also works with weapons teams. E.g., anti-tank units. -

The original point was that this mechanic should work this way with bunkers- which stand in as stationary vehicles for game purposes. But it doesn't. Perhaps a minor oversight by BFC which will be rectified. Don't know about Emrys' Jeep. It's a deal! Now I know how Galileo felt. -

OK, here this Stummel is given a dismount order and a movement order- up the hill- in the same WEGO orders phase. Note that the crew is not explicitly selected. The resolution phase, up the hill they go: -

That wasn't clear. What I meant was that you can schedule a dismount and assign a movement destination in the orders phase both of which the crew will carry out during the 60 second resolution phase. -

Err, I don't think so, Michael. Whether it's dismounting, or in the case of a tank, bailing out, one can assign movement orders to a crew on the same WEGO turn. -

Some of the exiting troops seem to bleed through the corners rather than straight out the back floor in a similar way they can sometimes pass through the corners of adjoining buildings. This behavior seems more noticeable when the bunker/pillbox is placed on a diagonal within the action square. This could be solved if the player could assign movement orders to a unit leaving a bunker as he can do already to crews dismounting a vehicle. -
Not sure. Too busy trying to determine the accuracy of that ersatz Tiger they brought in. Like everone else on the forum , admit it.

They're wearing the musette bag in Saving Private Ryan.

WriterJWA, I realize your intent in typing this was to illustrate an issue/limitation you have with CMBN. But you ended up composing a great advertisement for the game. Riveting stuff!

There's the rub.

But Steve just posted that units enjoy a spotting bonus *within* the Cover Arc. IOW, the FO could open fire on enemy troops exposing his position.
-
Then what does the player do when he wants effective spotting, for example an FO, nose pressed against the bocage, but at the same inhibiting the spotter from firing at targets?

Minor mysteries of CMBN

You're no doubt correct. But when you think about it an intense firefight lasting many minutes must have been a sweaty, draining and stressful experience for a tank crew. Particularly for the loader. -

If it weren't for the metastisizing hypoglycemia I would. And it's Sunday. -
This poll coulda have been a contendah. But the questions are insipid, e.g., are you male or female? How about: As a tactical simulator of WW2 do you prefer CM1x or CMBN? Exactly how many nostalgic die hards are out there, really? Inquiring minds....

I don't think so. -
Just traded in my old desktop for a much zippier laptop. Equivalent graphics cards but the laptop has 3X more memory and more processing speed. I couldn't load 'Fire Brigade' on the former machine and and that as well as 'Huzzar' on the latter. I have installed a bunch of graphics mods. Maybe a factor?

Dunno. Because they're hotly engaged for a significant time period? Also, akd, I believe you're mistaken about the fungibility of truck crews. HTs, yes. -
There are some elements in the game that are under explained in the manual and remain opaque for yours truly, at any rate. Here are a few, off the top of my head: 1- A single tank can only be manned and driven by its original crew. But any unit can jump in halftrack and take off- and operate the MG. But not trucks. Why? 2- Tanks, like infantry, show visual C2 status. If they're flying solo and depending on their radios is there a meaningful penalty? 3- Do ground troops suffer increased fatigue when marching uphill or traversing a ford? 4- Does fatigue accrue as the battle continues o,r when groundies recover to Rested, is the clock set back to zero? 5- Are vehicle crew susceptible to fatigue if they remain in the vehicle?
-
That's funny. For me bringing command lines back into CMBN would be like putting braces on the Mona Lisa. Blechh.

Good grief. I don't know about Canada, but wasn't the Sherman phased out in the US after the Korean War? I salute you, sir. -

Probably relatively quickly. BFC has nothing else on their plate. The question of the day: how will they handle the Churchill's belly-flopping over the bocage. Inquiring minds want to know.
