  1. One thing I was wondering about is the perceived lack of Russian ATGM / AT assets among the infantry in relation to the anticipated Ukrainian spring/summer offensive.
If Ukraine will indeed be able to have built up a decent number of mechanized/armored brigades trained good enough for large operations, combined with the proper support assets we have already seen in use, one can wonder if some of the more 'enthusiastic' members here which spoke of armored trusts towards the Azov sea might see some truth to their predictions in the end.

Of course it depends on a lot more than just the Russian infantry AT capabilities, but as all CM'ers know infantry without AT weaponry (or other forms of AT capable support including artillery), suck defending against mechanized/armored forces.

At the same time I don't know whether the Russian forces do indeed lack good numbers of AT assets among their infantry destined to be defending against wherever the Ukraine attacks will take place.

T-72s were a surprise to me.  So either purchased or traded.  I see the speculation they came from our Czech friends.  That would make sense.

So nearly 200 YPR.  That's quite a bit more than I thought and it explains why we have seen so many videos of them in action :)

    Steve

It does indeed explain (there have also been lost quite a couple of YPR according to Oryx, but this puts that in perspective a bit).

The T-72 story how I understood is that US&NL together bought 90 from CZ and paid to have them refurbished/upgraded. I also read they were to become the T-72EA standard. How much of that is truth I don't know.

Our MoD posted this picture with the infographic but I'm not sure whether that's accurate or just some picture they found fitting for the publication:

    t72

At the same time most of the picture seem accurate enough. For anyone wondering what type of 'shovel' was send :):

  3. Well it's all speculation until we know more. A network infrastructure / encryption admin doesn't necessarily need access to classified stuff, but often needs elevated technical permissions which can mean that he inadvertently had access to stuff on systems which was meant to have an extra layer of protection/encryption.
Or he was able to reprint stuff from the printers logbook, or just made some extra copies of documents he needed to copy for someone else.
But for the moment we just don't know how he got these docs.

We do know that he had some tech level function but was too stupid to realize that sharing (very) sensitive files with 'friends' is very dumb and sharing something on discord/online is even dumber. I mean he didn't even have the intention to leak it beyond his discord friends, or so they say. 🤣
Something doesn't add up somewhere, I'll guess some of the specifics will soon be made public.

The scoring system sure behaves oddly.  Like for my two games so far:

    Game 1:

    • turn 1 - no shots fired - me up 3 -1 (??)
    • turn 2 - I take out Striker, nothing for him - 3 - 1 for me (makes sense)
    • turn 3 - I take out a second Striker, he wounds one soldier - 3 -1 for him (??)

Game 2:  3 turns, no shots fired other than some arrant spotting rounds hitting empty desert - Game shows 0 - 0 after 3 turns.  So that could make sense if tournament gives out interim 0 - 0 scores for ties

Then I look at Lethaface scores.

He finishes up one game.  Shows 700 - 0 in Game2, with Game 1 )ongoing) something like 42- 26.

Next day scores in his games are like 642 - 587 (Game 2) and 587 - 642 (Game 1) for an overall tie (I do not recall the exact scores but I do recall they were opposites and added up equally)

    Next day his Game 2 score is 2000 - 69 and Game 1 is 1228 - 476

Tournament scoring is certainly a mystery.  I bet it is driving BFC Elvis nuts.

In my game the running score (1-3) seemed to work fine from my pov, I don't think there was any turn without casualties. The 700-0 was actually a temporary glitch, the battles weren't finished yet. The 2000-69 / 1228-476 are the final scores from the CMSF endscreen (not running score) and are correct.

I think if there was a way to get your opponent's e-mail that would be a good first step.  I had a ghost player in the first beta tournament (CMCW) and it was frustrating.  Could not contact them in any way to find out what was going on.  Even tried looking up their names on the Battlefront, Matrix, Slitherine forums but no luck.  Mainly, if I recall correctly, there were no ways to look up a forum member by name on any of the forums in order to check out their profiles and DM or email them.

On BFC forum at least you can search for members, IIRC also slitherine but not sure.

I agree that a way of contact with opponents would be a good thing. On discord I read someone had issues with their slitherine account / PBEM++.

Ok they bought the tanks from the Czech and give them to the Ukraine. It makes sense, or does it? Could give the money to the Ukraine and then they buy the tanks from the Czech. They could suspect some corruption and make sure the Ukraine army receives their MBTs.

Or it might just be efficient, Ukraine has enough on their hands.

I wonder what the 4 'other ships' are, some article mentioned they might me RHIBs for SOF or LST type of vessels which are being phased out.

Some folks would be surprised how easy it is to blend in and not be noticed just by being a trim, clean cut, "normal" looking young man as long as you don't draw attention to yourself in the workplace and in the community...

Knowing someone online and in the locker room versus just in passing at formations and at work, can be enlightening once they let their guards down.

Well that is why there is such a thing as enhanced screening including psychological tests / profiling.

21 year old guy? Ok if he was "older, fatherly figure for them" I don't even want to know age of other members. Nor their avatars and why -most probably- there are anime girls on them.

It's so absurd, Hollywood must one day make a gag comedy on this case.

But seriously, I hope it will not postpone Ukrainian offensive because of this leak.

    A propos completelly nothing:

As are horoscopes, homeopathy, brain storming meetings and tinfoil hats, just to name a few. Not becausev they are working but because some people believe they do. Or want to believe they do.

Then again, that might be a good reason to use polygraphs: the interviewee may believe the machine works which could give the interviewer an advantage.

You have never brainstormed properly 😉

It would half-as-bad if some idealistic spy was there. Unfortunatelly (and entirely predicatably given crazy environment we leave in) one of largest leaks of XXI cent. seem to be done by lone nerd who wanted to show himself against his gaming pals.

The funniest part in article is that this "OG" needed to constantly force attention of other guys, who chiefly wanted to play Tactical Shooters and watch Gun channels instead of analyzing complicated top-secret leaked documents. How boring.

🤣 Good stuff for a novel, rather fitting for our times I guess. Some radicalized person of a marginalized minority/identity tries to leak secret documents in discord but the other users just keep posting memes and ****posts not even noticing what's in front of their eyes. Apart from the one user not engaging in much posting but downloading the stuff to sell it to on ebay to pay for their medical/energy bills.

With a better designed vetting process this could be fairly easily worked around.  For example, being told to hand over access to all social media accounts during application process and being subjected to random inspections while holding classification.  Couple things like this with a lie detector test and I think we're well on the way to scoping out who we're hiring:

Interviewer (I) = do you have any social media accounts you haven't told us about?

    Prospect (P) = no.

I = well, this needle here shows you're lying.  What account are you not telling us about and what is your user name?

P = well, I go by JewKiller666 on whitepower.com.  But I hardly use it so I thought I didn't need to mention it.

I = yeah, well, don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out.  NEXT!

Of course I am being a bit flip here, but my guess is that the vetting process is not geared towards the full spectrum of whackos out there.  It needs to be on the lookout for people who are, basically, antisocial generally.  You know, because antisocial people tend to do antisocial things.

I wouldn't be half surprised if they still have a type written question like "have you ever been a member of the Communist Party USA?"  OK, I'm being flip again... so I'll just stop there.

    Steve

Coming from a country where polygraphs aren't a thing (imo for good reason), I hope that these are used only as an extra not as a replacement for other types of vetting/screening. 😉

One of the problems with the clearance process is that the younger you are and less history you have, the easier it is to get a clearance.  And at that age it's easier to hide wacko properties because there are just fewer people who would have seen them.

A lot of the investigation is about whether you have questionable connections, or things you're hiding from people that make you blackmailable, etc, and so if you're 22 and fresh out of school there's just a lot less there.  I'm also not convinced that the government has done any really scientific study of what works and what doesn't as evaluation criteria - quite a few of the criteria look like they came right out of the 50s and there are things that make you "questionable" that might have been an issue in 1956 but not only are common today, so common that you may not be able to find people without those characteristics.

But to your point - they should be able to find people who aren't wackos who are competent, even for pretty obscure things.  You may not always be able to get all the skills/capabilities you want in a single cleared person, but should be able to do it by making a small group of complementary people.  And that's probably more secure in some ways, since they should start noticing if their teammates are wacko.

Over here the formally required procedures are usually mainly (automated) 'desk' research into known antecedents, the higher the clearance/responsibility the more case research per case into family/friend connections etc. But positions relevant to national security will usually also include psychological screening/profiling. For example, I don't suppose 'they' give any junior sysadmin working for or with military intelligence access to top secret stuff without oversight.
Nutjobs should be filtered out, but that's no 100% guarantee. Someone can stable and smart enough to pass such tests while, perhaps due to personal circumstances, at a later moment stupid enough to share sensitive stuff with their 'trusted' discord/friend group where people have known each other for years.

Edit: the reported information in this case however sounds like it was a nutjob.

Wow. You got a perfect score in one battle. Well done!

You should definitely have seen the end game AAR for both battles. All of the testing I did resulted in getting them both. I suppose that it's possible that he didn't complete the last turn that would have generated it for you. It's the surrender game that you didn't get, correct? I'll make sure to check that as well. Thanks.

To be clear (maybe I wasn't): I did see the surrender screen with AAR but how I understood it is that it's supposed to keep that turn for a number of days?
After I got the surrender screen there was still a last save/turn to send to my opponent, after which I think the score was updated - but no AAR/last turn saved.

  15. My game against @meyertal (not sure if he is here) has been finished. It was a good game, his turn rate was great (there was always a turn ready in my limited PC time and they would keep coming as long as I was behind PC :)). GG!

He went for an aggressive approach as both the Syrians and the US forces, while I chose to defend from the reverse slope as the Syrians and prepared for an attack into my setup zone as the US.

The aggressive approach didn't work too well for his Syrians, as my Javelins took out all of his AFVs in a couple of turns. After that I could use the Strykers firepower and mobility to fix and flank his remaining infantry.
On my Syrian battle I had my 120mm mortars on a harassing mission on the other side of the slopes, adjusting targets now and then. They proved very deadly (20+ casualties), especially because I had some other units on overwatch forcing his troops to hug the slope and then take 120mm airburst :).

@BFCElvis the scoring issue indeed corrected itself in the end (after showing up a few times). One thing I noticed though, is that only my Syrian battle AAR is available. My US battle ended with my opponent surrendering with 5min left, after which I send the last turn/save. I had expected the AAR to come in after that?

Hehe, politicians work in mysterious ways.
Although I agree with @Battlefront.com, better to reverse a policy which in the end didn't work out as intended/expected than to stick with a bad decision. The other side of the coin is that if such things happens too often, the population will lose part of it's faith in the parliament/institutions.

I have found PBEM+ to be a bit quirky with CM Games (mostly playing CMCW so far with it).  As in playing a turn, plotting moves and sending off turn with no apparent errors, and then seeing my same turn (playable by me) still in the "inbox".  Asking opponent, they did not get turn, so redoing it, up to 3 or 4 times before opponent gets turn at his end.  and then sometimes the same thing, so I redo my turns, and then I get auto e-mail notification from Slitherine pointing out I have resent the turn more than once.  When turn finally goes through the turn number on my screen changes +1 and I can see the turn, but no longer play it.  That is my experience with normal PBEM games, but my limited experience with the tournaments is the turn disappears altogether from your view once you send it.

I have only experienced PBEM++ with tournaments. The file always disappears after I send it, afaik that's how it's supposed to work?
I had an issue once when other people got the login problem this week, probably there was some server issue when I send in my turn (although I didn't get an error message) as it was still there next time I logged in. But after that things went back to normal.

    Cheery!

Worked for me just now. Edit: although the file I had already played and send at 21:00 was there again. I guess it didn't register or something, I played it around 21:00 my time (4 hours ago).
