  1. Haven't read him. I do have another i read not long ago that was a very good fictional historical book on the soviet front. I'll try and find it and post it. The author did a great job at impressing what it was like to be a lowly german grunt in the winter of russia. I'll look for it since the discussion i see here is quite interesting. I'm going to the book store this weekend, i'll pull a book or 2 from this thread.
  2. Ok, playing game now, i took out a BT-5 with a german FT. I'll try and figure out which scenario i'm in. He was hiding popped up hit him and BT5 went poof.
  3. Thanks Wicky, i've not got AK installed yet. BB is so vast and i've barely scratched it.
  4. What??????????????????? Oh this is too sweet... LOL, your from Canada Eh? How funny and what a small world, my wife is Canadian, from Barrie Ontario. Her mom lived up in Collingwood for awhile where the shipyards used to be. Beautiful country.
  5. Rank, what about using grunts to button up the tank and running your TD out of hiding for a fast scoot and shoot? I can't time something like that well at the moment, LOL. But so long as the AI doesn't tag the TD as a threat you should be in good position. The problem for me would be trying to ensure nothing else opened up on my TD. Seems i can't hide a tank running through a tunnel LOL>
  6. I do understand what you say, the see through walls concept isn't something us older farts grasp to fast. LOL However, it's a super enjoyable platform. Yes, i'm trying to avoid the 60 squads and 400 tanks at the moment. Somehow, that would really really irratate me into boredom. Taking the Train scenario and a couple of others i've continually played trying to pin down uses for equipment. At the very back of the battles menu, i found a kursk armor engagement with a heap of panthers vs a mix of russian. That was fun for a "They don't stand a chance scenario." But isn't one that i find replayable. It's a you german, they russian, they die map.
  7. I've tried this scenario several times. As Germans on the assault and Russians as the Defense. Germans - results are fairly disasterous for me. I've managed to take about half the objectives at best. I can take and hold the train station most of the time. The AA guns that double as tank killers are exceptionally deadly. Russians - I pounced the Germans mercilessly, i don't think the scenario is really designed for the AI to play the Germans (thinking i read that in the briefing??? not sure). The german AI did stupendously worse than me the supernoob. Have any newer players tried this scenario? It's at the bottom of the first page of battles, maybe top of second off the top of my head.. Anyone have any advice for this confrontation? Is this one of those that is near impossible battles?
  8. Rank, like you i'm a long time gamer. Squad Leader, Blitzkrieg, Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, all the way up to computer versions like Steel Panthers, SSI games (late 70's early 80's with cardboard pcs etc. for me. "The Longest Day" we played alot, and it took the longest day to play too, LOL). Yes, the cover and concealment here works as i think it should with regards to infantry. However, the vehicle part of this i'm confounded by. Part of it is the way the woods etc. work. The game engine doesn't seem to "pin down" points of concealment that i can currently identify. Some woods seem to block LOS while others don't seem to matter, or varied depths of concealment. Then theres buildings, although this seems straight forward, it doesn't seem to be to me. The other thing is i'm used to having control of those units. Here, you say "go there" and it's possible (probable in my case) that tank commander gives me the finger and plots his own course LOL, or even fires when i'd prefer they stayed quiet and hidden. "Dam their eagerness" as i say. This reminds me somewhat of Squad Leader come to life. I'll be on this game for quite a long time. A fellow named Joe has a small PBEM going with me. More of a trainer for me to see how the PBEM works. At current, i've lots of training to do. I play the scenarios to get a feel for things, as they stay consistant. I can replay the same one over and over trying new things and finding out what works and why. Not all are meant to be won, but it gives a consistency.
  9. Thanks folks. But since i've only been playing roughly a week and a few days i'm finding this game engine is so far removed from anything i've ever done that nothing i "know" seems to work right. Except infantry, I can raise hell with those fellows, but armor. The few i've played yet seem to end badly. The Nashorns i thought would be an easy one, but all 3 were KOA in 2 turns being hit by t34s 1.5 clicks out.
  10. As to status of crew i'd say that "veteran" and such has as much if not more to do with the knowing of ones machine as it does to the abilty to withstand fire or score direct hits all the time in combat. Even veterans get excited and hasty, it's the ability to continue to load and fire in a repetitive manner or the drivers knowledge to keep the vehicle from having to remain in place for long in the commander wants it moved fast. It appears that all i read here, although i'm shocked to find that the concensus is that the Sherman was as good as the PzIV's that the game engine appears to me highly accurate by what others have said. I'm not so into my tanks and weapons that i know armor ratings and muzzle velocities, most i know comes from reading accounts and other historical shows and such. The concensus i've understood was the Sherman was underarmored and undergunned. But maybe that's simply a grass is greener on the other side issue, and we simply don't want to admit our armor tactics weren't as sophisticated at the germans. I don't know, but it appears they were even or close nuff.
  11. I found the same thing out about the Nashorns last night. The Nashorns mount an 88 don't they? I'd hate to be in a tank and serve under me, it's a sure death sentence. LOL
  12. Thanks folks, i'll pick some of those up. I worked for a woman that was survived the war in Germany in the soviet zone. She told me that they used to make schnapps and one day they made a batch incorrectly (she said it tasted like gasoline) and were attempting to pour it out. A soviet patrol caught them and refused to let them throw it away. She said her mother told them "we don't speak russian, and they will shoot us or worse if we don't give it to them." They were horrified the next morning when 3 officers and 2 of the men came back to what they called their house the next day. She said they were yelling and banging on the door to "Open Up, Immediately" as the soldiers were standing by the road. She said they all stood around looking brave thinking we've killed some of them and now they take us away. The truth of the matter was far different. The officers caught the men finishing off the drink and were furious at them because they weren't informed of the find. The officers wanted them to continue making their drink "Exactly like they got". One of the officers spoke some german and Renate told them that the batch they took wasn't good and they were trying to pour it out. "They refused to believe me", she told me. So for the next 3 months till they escaped to west germany they continued to give them Green Schnapps and weren't harrassed and lived generally well. She told me those men must have no taste buds and the hardest stomachs on earth. That was about the only story she told me.
  13. Martry, if by chance you do find a red army account book, i'd like to know. The hardships and the way they faced them would be a great read. Those poor folks endured things we haven't had to even pretend to deal with.
  14. Ummmm, i do apologize. It was coined from their own words, i should have put that in i suppose. The accounts taken were from the lower ranks. These folks were by and large i suppose E1-E5 ranks by comparison. It was written and compiled by "GORDON WILLIAMSON". I wasn't starting any debates about the SS and all thoughts implicite. First hand accounts from an unlikely source, or so i thought. At any rate.
  15. I have SC, i find it nothing like Squad Leader. The closest thing i ever found to that in a computer Genre was Steel Panthers. That game rocked. And still does, i should get my old Win95 machine running again so i can get into DOS mode. LOL

  17. I've read several threads about WW2 books. For those of you who would like to read personal accounts of those who served in the Waffen-SS this is an excellent read. It covers all thoughts from why they joined the Waffen-SS, their opionions of the war, how they were treated afterward, how they treated others, russia, france, after the war, their thoughts on the leadership of the allies. The book is a makeup of many individual stories. It's for the most part i feel heartfelt and honest. The author talks about the reluctance of the members to discuss their affliation in the beginning due to the occurances after the war. Great book in my opionion. One every History buff should own since it gives voice to a chosen few who have not been allowed to speak.
  18. Well rebel, i can tell you i have been taught a quick lesson in mobility. Got stupid i did. LOL. If part of your defense is going to be artillery based or anything that can't move fast then you will need to find a way to keep that lone sharpshooter from altering your finely laid plans. P.S. If you play the russians, you will at least have peace knowing that whomever he doesn't shoot, your Police units will "ensure" the survivors that are cowering from their abandoned post of defense of the beloved mother russia will not do it again. "We're Green, We're mean...... Grrrrrr" Respectfully signed, The Enemy.
  19. I've known several tankers. They had concerns of flame throwers in real life. Pretty much, the concerns were that if they could get close enough to the tank then the infantry had abandoned them. At that point they are generally at the mercy of grunts on the ground. Should they be able to get a hatch open, then yep, they are in for a terrible few seconds. Concerns were also about the ability of the hatches to seal. Flame will melt and eat through any exposed rubberized gaskets. I would say the reality of the situation would depend upon the way the hatches were sealed. Hastily made AFV's with inadequate ability to give itself a contained atmosphere would be at risk to flame throwers. However, i would have to say the tank would need to be disabled first. So long as it can drive away it's a very risky assualt, not to mention very unnerving for the poor sap with the FT, it that tank has a working co-ax he may be toast if the vehicle backs away quickly. You may set off some crewman with asthema but i'd say the majority of the crews will just leave unharmed and angry that you tried to bar-b-que them then lob HE at you in the next few minutes.
  20. yep, is tcp alot faster?? I've read the manual, i like to look around yet, i'm still new. So watching the tanks go BANG when hit..... well what can i say, i'm like a moth to a flame.
  21. I may try the TCP/IP. It's bad enough i play solo, my wife may brain me if i slip off online during the middle of the night LOL
  22. I'm a newcomer to CMBB. I'm looking to try a PBEM game. However, i'm a super noob so i may need help even doing that LOL. I'm not new to wargaming though, i'm a long time scrapper from way back. I've held my own against all from as far back to stratego in my childhood through SSI games such as Steel Panthers and the great 5 star series like panzer general. Yes, sadly i lost my way and joined the click fest platoons of Command and Conquer and the hybrid billion knock offs that it spurned. Have i proved my old geekdom yet? LOL
