I had noticed that too... My (non pro) impression is that you cannot really be sure about what the grenade has actually done around the corner, so if you follow it you might jump into unharmed and ready enemies that you just put on higher alert. So things look a lot more hesitant/methodical than the theoretical usage of grenades to quickly clear areas.

Maybe he is a pro FPS-gamer. Everyone knows Mosins are always one shot kills while you need multiple hits with an AK More seriously, I guess properly scoped that would be a nice budget sniper rifle, but naked and with a bayonet...

It's me or the terrain between Kremmina and Slovyansk as you get closer to the latter looks like night impassable on Google Maps? That meandering river, what looks like marshes, dense woods, very crappy roads. Seems like any attack on that axis would have to take a detour either north or south and cross plenty of chokepoints.
