  1. Yeah, I do real time. You can pause it any time you want. It's like going from the early XCOM games to the newer real-time-with-pause like UFO Afterlight.

You can't pause in multiplayer, but that's a different game.

For some reason Javelins are much more effective if you hit the first floor. They kill a lot more bad guys, even ones on the third floor.

  2. I'd love for multiplayer lag to be fixed as well. Not sure what's going on there. I've got two NVIDIA 7800GTX SLI cards, and the framerate isn't what I'd expect. The main thing is the lag. I don't see how the graphics drivers would effect that, but I'm not an expert.

I don't know the answer because this is really the first I've heard about it. Testing didn't uncover any problems, but that means little since a couple dozen people playing doesn't give a fair representation of the possible variables out there. I'll see what I can dig up though.

    Steve

Thank you for aknowledging it. I've been posting in tech support for a week, and 2 other people there had the same problem. I guess it's not pervasive.
  4. I can't play multiplayer, so it's a bad release as far as I'm concerned. I'll have no one to play with because my group is sick of fighting lag and bugs.

I automatically bought this game on the basis of the last 3 games, which I bought at realease for full price. I won't do that again.

I've already told everyone else in the guild not to buy it because they'll have no one to play with, either. I feel kind of bad because I encouraged 4 people to get it and now they're all stuck with a dud. We can't play with each other, which sucks.

  5. I'm just angry that I can't play multiplayer without doing PBEM. It's cumbersome and time consuming. The Real Time multiplayer mode DOES NOT WORK.

I keep asking around, everyone I talk to (about a half dozen people so far) seems to have the same problem, and yet there's almost nothing on the forum. If WEGO was multiplayer like the old games, I'd be fine. But if RT is here, it should work. I don't play these games to fight an AI.

All the other bugs are annoying, but core functionality in a multiplayer game is important! Why bother making real time if it lags terribly? And it does for me EVERY SINGLE GAME. Everyone I play with lags out when they play other people. Is this rare? Or does no one play real time multiplayer? Is it something that's easy to fix on my end? Or is the netcode really that bad?

I'm starting to think that the problem isn't going to get solved and I should just go do something else. I've posted a bunch about it and I don't want to bother the forum any more. If I had to do it over I wouldn't buy the game in its current form.

I won't buy any future title, either, until I get a chance to read a lot of good reviews. This is frustrating.

  6. Is there any way to fix this? I'm really tired of trying to play this game if this isn't going to get fixed. It's just not fun anymore. It's not real- time multiplayer if one side is so lagged that they can't play! Is this a rare problem or is it being ignored?

For the record, CMSF v 1.02,Pentium 830d 3 ghz, 2 NVIDIA 7800GTX SLI (latest driver and forceware),2 gigs RAM, Windows XP. I've got a cable broadband connection and I play all kinds of internet games without any trouble. I've tried turning off my firewall to no effect.

The problem is that the guest lags by enough to affect gameplay in lots of strange ways- can't unload infantry, can't fire javelins, command lag, stuff disappears...

Heh. Some of my best opponents for CMAK and CMSF are "FPS teenage crowd." It's a video game, and there's nothing about CMSF that keeps young people from learning it. And being good at it. An adult with a military background (say) may have an early advantage since he has a better idea about realistic ranges and weapon capabilities. But the kids figure that out pretty quickly...
  8. The volunteer force does pay better, but the decisive factor is people making it a career rather than an unpleasant couple of years that must be endured. Soldiering is a trade, and professionals will do better than some 18-20 year olds randomly drafted and given some rudimentary training. It's the same as anything else- computer programming, car repair, whatever. Just putting on the clothes and tools doesn't magically give you skills.

Well- trained soldiers are not supermen, but if they didn't have an advantage in a tactical simulation there would be something wrong. The disparity in leadership and training should be apparent. And it is, which is exactly what we'd expect.

If we had the US Army vs. the British Army or the Budeswehr, then it would be practically even.

As the player, your own tactical leadership is a much larger variable than the quality of your units. I have been drubbed by Syrians, and have done well with them. Making the enemy fight on your terms is the principle that applies here.

  9. Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Why have airstrikes if the enemy is going to cruise all over the map? I crashed the first time, so the next I planned an airstrike and managed to wipe out the entire Mech. Infantry platoon with one hit. Lucky. I was out of Javelins and TOWs.

There's also the mission that can be won almost solely by shelling the town...

  10. US infantry are better, because they are trained to a US standard. The Syrians are trained to a much lower standard, 'Special Forces' or no. There's no worldwide standard for infantry training. The Iraqi "Republican Guard" were better than the Iraqi Army, but far inferior to normal US Army units. Just having a fancy name does not an elite force make

Now, I expect they would fight and die bravely. It's just that Syria does not have the resources, leadership, or tradition to put up an infantry force equal to the US Army in quality. Hence the sneaky tactics, IEDs, etc. That's a rational response to their inequality in training and leadership.

  11. RT is fine for me. I'm used to it anyway- I play a lot of fast games. Single player is pretty chill because of pause. Multiplayer doesn't work with large battles so that's moot. On a small multiplayer game it's quite pleasant.

On all the CM games I play mostly zoomed out, which means I miss most of the details. But I have a far better view of what is going on.
