Now at battlefront.com
They are stated as beta-pictures, so we might be getting close to a release, even though they say not close to final product

Interesting. Wonder if its a bug specifically related to Pointe du Hoc then? Or perhaps its deliberate. Nah, that would be weird...
It might. I pointed (no pun intended:rolleyes:) it out to the guy who made the scenario (sorry, I forget how you are...) and he said it might be expected as the climbing of the cliffs uses a "flaw" in the programming.
-
The very same thing happened to a MG team of mine in Pointe du Hoc, but I never figured out "the spooky man" issue. They just never got off the beach.

Must admit up front that I haven't read the entire thread, but the title seemed appropriate for what I'm trying to "get off my chest".
Current scenario: I have one panzer asset. The ground condition is dry. I plot my first move: slow along a dirt road. I barely stray after 30 sec, so the minimum of track/treads goes over the border of the road into plain dirt and I immediately get immobilized. That just seems wrong or I'm the unluckiest german in Normandy. I dearly hope that lost asset won't be the back-breaker, since I'm starting to spot enemy tanks. Life/war is a b*tch

:DWell deserved:D:D

This will go great with the German Voices mod i just downloaded
Good job Fredrock.

Does CMBN take into account that it is much harder to spot things when you have the sun in your face (squint your eyes etc.), especially a low hanging sun?

Sorry, rocketman, I have to refute that. I have also just run a lengthy test and I found that NOT every smoke shell that hits a roof will bounce. At least not the German smoke shells.
I tried every caliber howitzer smoke shell that the Germans field (75mm, 105mm, 150mm), and while they all will sometimes bounce off of roofs, they will more often go through the roof and explode inside the building. I have a feeling that larger calibers tend to bounce less, but I didn't count them.
I also couldn't manage to bounce a smoke shell off a roof into a Priest despite a lot of tries, but I DO now know the following:
1) A 75mm German howitzer smoke shell on a direct hit into a Priest will likely damage the vehicle (optics, tracks mostly) and often, but not always, injure one or more crew members. Very rarely will it knock out the vehicle. A near miss will rarely damage the tracks.
2) A 105mm German howitzer smoke shell on a direct hit into a Priest will always damage the vehicle (optics, tracks mostly; engine sometimes) and always injure one or more crew members. It will sometimes, but not always, knock out the vehicle due to crew losses, very rarely due to fire aboard. A near miss will almost always damage the tracks.
3) A German 150mm howitzer smoke shell on a direct hit will always damage the vehicle (optics, tracks, engine, radio) and always injure several or all crew members. It will always knock out the vehicle due to crew losses, sometimes due to fire aboard. A near miss will certainly damage the tracks and occasionally immobilize the vehicle. The 150mm smoke shells can actually penetrate the thin armor of the priest on occasion when they fall ON it as opposed to INTO it, with identical results.
4) Smoke shells that bounce off roofs will always explode and generate smoke wherever they impact the ground.
5) Direct hits from 210mm Brummbär howitzers using HE shells will catastrophically kill Priests almost every time, and rarely leave any survivors . Did that test for fun .
6) Interesting: 210mm howitzers fired in a mission with duration set to maximum will only fire 20 of their 80 shells (4 tubes). I think this is due to the barrels overheating, but I'm not sure.
What I forgot to state was that my additional test was going back in the same scenario using an old save and do the barrage again. Som my test is only for 105 mm in La Valance.
Nice tests stoex.

Yep, the two other shells (not in video) both did this. After landing, they emitted smoke as they should. Not like the shell broke on impact
I made another test and can safely say that each and every smoke shell that hits a roof will bounce. Maybe the cause of this "bug" is that smoke shells doesn't explode on impact, but rather emit smoke after landing, and since shells can't stick to roofs, they "must" bounce like a ricochet.
I made another video showing that shells (two) that land on the map after a bounce then will emit smoke. Sorry for poor video quality

Me too. That was one very expensive box :-/
Me as well. Expensive: Yes. Worth it?: Absolutly!

I figured out how to make a video. Watch in 1080p and full screen:
Re: bouncing howitzer smoke shells.
So, anyone from BFC, is this a bug? If so, will it be corrected?
-
whos UI mod do you use? the UI looks damn nice?
It's Juju's tweaked UI. Mind you, the movie was captured on a widescreen HD monitor.
-
On a side note:
I know next to nothing about ballistics. But to me the small weapons ricochettes sometimes fly all over the place. Did they do that IRL? Or is this another case of the "bouncies" - maybe surfaces of houses are somewhat mismodeled?
-
Hah, that's funny! Did you follow if they landed anywhere on map and if they emitted smoke there?
FWIW bouncing shells as such is nothing special - with a shallow impact angle, slow fuse and hard ground it's possible that the shell bounces off before detonating. Not quite like that, though!

I want to see a round bounce from one roof to another, and then bounce off that one.
New contest to get a double bank shot into an open Priest.
I dare anyone try to set this up in the editor and try. If they succeed they should be treated to a free Commonwealth module by BFC. Apart from eternal internet (or at least CMBN-nuts) fame.
-
Wow that looks funny. =) It's a bug for sure.
It sure does. Thing is, in a barrage of about 30 shells, all (three) that hit buildings did the "bouncy-thing". Maybe the roofs in the village La Valance is made of some special stuff.

I have a save - how do I turn it into a video? Noob question, I know...

Unknown to you, that house contained an illegal rubber manufacturing lab.
So, that was the secret German weapon, not the V2-rockets

Video!

That roof must have been made of some tough material!
Michael
It bounces approx. 100 m! One would think it would bury itself in the roof, or shatter into pieces.

This VAAR is a perfect example of why we need kill stats tracking for all off-board assets.
+1 Being an arty and stats nut, I really miss this.
-
I just saw, within a couple of minutes, two smoke shells, from a 105 mm howitzer, literally bounce off the roof of a house. Bounce high aswell
Didn't know shells of that caliber had that "in them", or is this a bug?

Reason I asked is that I have three missions at the same time, with spotting rounds falling in very different places at the same time. No noticable delay of FFE or accuracy. Maybe better if it was a FO unit, but a lowly platoon HQ.

Sounds interesting, but can you give some more information on how the info and rank display works / looks like / replaces / etc?
