their games are really cheap when compared to battlefront

However, Battlefront games last for years in terms of whether you get tired of playing them.

Many of us here have been playing CMBN since it came out and are still playing it. ( and all the others as well ). Which adds up to some serious value for money.

If in any doubt, download some of the demos :)

You'll rarely find references to Real Time in the forums. Or "fori"? 🤓 Latin speakers, please help.

Generally, -us ending ( male gender ) goes to -i  ( octopus - octopi )
-a ending ( female ) to -ae  ( can't think of a current English example off the top of my head )
and -um (neuter) to -a ( forum - fora )

( one thing that fools a lot of people is that "data" is the plural, "datum" is the singular. But because of the way it gets commonly used, when you use the plural verb with it, it often looks/sounds wrong "data are..." )

And yes, what everyone said - WeGo is still popular and much played - if it went away, I daresay a lot of us would too

Don't forget there are 2 'pause' buttons to confuse matters further:

    1. Pause button immediately below 'action screen', part of a group of 3 pause/cancel/evade; this 'pause' button will ONLY do a permanent pause.

    2....

This one is most useful for removing pauses without having to cycle through the entire option list. :)

IIRC teams suffer a small loss in morale & efficiency when they are first split, but I don't believe there's any penalty after that provided they are in contact with their platoon HQ.

    Not the case in CM2

They can't be split while mounted.  What I do is split them in the setup phase where you can freely move the teams in and out of vehicles and Acquire ammo. After they are split I cross load them back into the vehicles (or they will re-combine). So 1st Squad A team goes into halftrack #2 while 1st Squad B team goes into halftrack #1 etc.  Then you are able to do what you described above.

For the M12 did you use the direct fire Target Smoke command?  I just did a test on my test map and it worked.

An alternative to cross-loading ( usually only feasible in setup phase, however ), is to dismount the squad and split them.

You then give the halftrack its movement orders.

You then add the separate teams one-at-a-time, giving each one ( or at least one* ) their disembarkation movement orders.

Once they have separate movement orders, they will not recombine. :)

    * - so for a 3 team squad, at least 2 need orders, if only a 2 team squad, only 1 has to have orders.

Other news just in:  Warmongering Sweden bring back conscription

"Ms Nyh Radebo said the return to conscription was prompted by "the security change in our neighbourhood".
"The Russian illegal annexation of Crimea [in 2014], the conflict in Ukraine and the increased military activity in our neighbourhood are some of the reasons," she said."

Actually, the headline is "Sweden brings back military conscription amid Baltic tensions".

    No warmongering to see here.

Nobody has an obligation to surrender, but they have that option. They aren't going to take it, and opt for killing instead, so there's a war. This is pretty much the thing I've originally said, it's really not that complex.

Let me try and get this straight - you're saying that in order not to have a war, a country that is invaded should surrender ?

    Ooookay.

( btw, what country do you live in ? Just that I'm feeling the urge to invade one and it seems wise to pick one that's going to surrender straight away )

It's a clear and obvious demonstration that "niche" or "complex" titles aren't actually "niche" at all.

The game doesn't even have an active subreddit.

Well, I don't know - how "niche" and/or "complex" is Crusader Kings regarded as being ?

Because there's a huge difference between a grand strategy title and a game that's modelling every bullet etc.

No active subreddit ? That's a damn poor show !
You have identified a major shortcoming of Combat Mission. Go ye forth and create one then - we will all be grateful.

if you are not aware that NATO stole a piece of historical Serbian heartland to create Albanian enclave there (and NATO base of course), you have some serious modern history...deficiencies.

So ethnic Albanians became the majority in Kosovo and wanted independence = BAD

Ethnic Russians in Donbas Ukraine wanted independence from Kiev = GOOD

    I'm confused - somehow there's a difference here, but I can't see it...

No one can be trusted with a beer stash. ;)

( although, I keep a beer stash purely to distract and divert people who might otherwise aim for my champagne and wine stash  )

  10. You have misunderstood the concept of ammo sharing.

They do not pass it around so that the numbers shown on the UI even out - it is a function of nearness that teams low ( or out ) of ammo will get ammo from adjacent teams - ie. they can continue to fire, but the adjacent squad will have its ammo reduced - they pass it across as required. So even if they have 0 ammo of a type, they can continue to fire those weapons so long as their nearby mates have ammo for it.

I believe that the low-ammo squad's RoF drops as it takes time to get the ammo passed across, but I've rarely seen it in action, so can't state that one 100%.

... I remember in the original CMx1 games there was a delay after issuing an order before it was carried out, and the delay was greater if the unit was out of range of their commander. I don't know why that got removed in CMx2. ...

The real trouble with this was that it didn't scale well - ie. it made sense when issuing some orders that there would be a delay concomitant with the complexity of the mission, but trying to get a conscript truck driver to simply drive down a bendy road could take well over a turn of delay because each waypoint added more time to the delay ( and each increment of delay for a conscript was a lot ! ). In reality that should have been the much faster action.

  12. Left Mouse click and hold while moving the mouse lets the camera "float" around with fixed view.

Right mouse click and hold while moving lets the camera "pan" in all directions from fixed spot. :)

Between the two of them, I never really need to use any other camera buttons.
And yes, this has been in since CMBN - I admit I wasn't initially aware of it when CMBN was new, but once I'd been told and used it, it has become totally second nature.

Am a bit perplexed by your response to VladimirTarasov regarding riding on top, since I thought tank riders were in? What he's saying seems to suggest they're not, but I should I bei interpreting his lament to mean he wants to put all the guys in the back on top, which I've seen myself in stills and video alike, yet the code won't let him. Please clarify this.

    John Kettler

What Steve is saying is that you can get tank riders on a tank because that's the only place they can go.

But an IFV can have both crew and passengers inside, so how do you tell the passengers to get on top and not get inside ?

That is what the code can't handle... at this point in time anyway.

I've got a problem with the individual sitting around for 30 turns prior to the assault and not reloading or consolidating ammo.

Considering the degree to which CM soldiers are still influenced by unrealistic player omniscience and control, untimely reloading is the sort of thing I'll just chalk up to friction and chance.

Yes, you may know they're sitting around for 30 turns, but to a pixelguy, he could be in action again at any moment.
