  1. I recently tried reading Antony Beevor´s "Ardennens 1944" - but got stuck in the snow. I've really enjoyed many of his earlier books on WWII, but this one isn't up to par, in my view.

In my opinion the main problem of the book was the lack of good overview maps. There are a lot of different locations that you as a reader have to keep track of - unless you're very familiar the geography of the Ardennes. There are perhaps 15 maps in the book, but I spent a lot of time paging from one map to the other - trying to locate Trois Ponts, Houffalize or whatever.

In the end, I got so confused and frustrated I gave it up.

  2. Anyone know if the snow can effect the speed of infantry movement? Or is it just visual only.

It has definitely been my impression that this was the case in CMFI - Gustav Line. But I have no evidence - cant remember if I read it in the manual.

  3. I´m already fairly satisfied with my results tweaking colors and overall lighting/contrast of various textures to make vehicles more look operating in wet environmental conditions. Maybe there´s some extra potential in creating normal maps for thick layers of wet mud and snow, although I understand this to be quite a laborious process from my current experience.

I dont see how this could be achieved by normal maps alone. A layer of snow will add a layer that could be several centimeters thick - on top of the actual vehicle. In my view, no fiddling with normal maps will be able to make a realistic representation of that.

I am probably not the only CMFI player who has been longing to play with Aris' versions of the british Shermans. But it seemed that he wasn't going to make any.

So I contacted him and asked if he would lend me the original psd files for his CMBN british Shermans. I would then use them to make a full set of CMFI versions.

He kindly agreed and sent me the files.

While working on this I began to understand Aris' reluctance to make this set. There is a lot of work involved:

Every Sherman comes in Sicily (normal), Mainland and Mainland Olive versions. On top of that, I have made most of the files in normal, muddy and snowy versions. That means that many of the bmp's come in six different versions. All in all, there are 175 bmp files for the seven different Shermans in this set.

So the weathering is still Aris' work transferred to CMFI. My contribution has been to tranfer his work to the CMFI files – plus adding mud and snow for the [muddy] and [snow] files. Not all Shermans come in snowy versions.

In short: Aris made the art work, I made the leg work.

  5. Well, these clips depict "Weserübung", the attack on Denmark (and Norway) - not Fall Weiss or Gelb (but I guess these actions would fall under that CM title). Thanks a lot for posting this. I agree it would be great to such have a game.

I am looking very much forward to seeing "9 april", these scenes look great. But I must admit that I find it a bit paradoxical to produce a movie about such a tiny battle (in WW II context) as this. Must seem rather strange to non-danes. But it seems to be very well made.

  6. Wonderful. Very well produced video. Really like the graphics and film clips in the intro. You've surely got a talent for making this stuff.

My only - rather personal - gripe are the unit symbol mods you are using. I know they are authentic unit symbols and so on - but personally I've never learned which are which - and so I have very little idea what is going on when looking at the map from a high view point. In my opinion it would be better to use the default BFC symbols in videos like this.

But apart from that - small - complaint: Great video, looking forward to the next ones.

  7. I bought one of the previous games, Achtung Panzer, about five years ago. I really liked the graphics, but the gameplay sucked in my opinion. I found it very hard to learn - and very confusing to play. Hated the UI too.

It was dirt cheap, 10 euros if I remember correctly, but I very soon gave up on it. So I'll have to repeat what i've said several times before: In terms of gaming hours pr euro/dollar/krone CM is still way the cheapest game I ever bought.

  8. Thanks a lot for the comments. The heating issue worries me a bit, though, so I've been looking around for alternatives.

Here are some I found, but I'm a bit out of my depth here: They seem to be different versions of the same card - but with seemingly more/larger (better?) fans. Can any of you tell me if these are better at cooling than the Zotac (couldn't find cooling related reviews)?

    MSI N760 TwinFrozr 2GD5/OC, 2GB DDR5

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 WindForce 3X OC, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort

Edit: Managed to find reviews of the MSI card. Looks much better heatwise. Any reason not to get this instead (it is actually cheaper here)?

  9. I'm in a similar situation, so I'm joining the discussion, hoping to get some advice too.

My GPU is dying and I'm looking for a replacement. A year ago I discussed options for a new GPU with Schrullenhaft and others on the RT Tech Support Forum  (http://community.battlefront.com/topic/115773-need-some-advice-on-out-of-memory-troubles/?hl=bandwidth#entry1543127) I didn´t get a new GPU back then, but now I can´t avoid replacing it and my finances have improved a bit.

Judging from the advice I got back then - as well as this thread - it seems that the most important factors when getting a GPU for playing CM (that is almost the only game I play) are: Bandwidth and Nvidia. So I've been looking around and have decided to get this one:

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 760 (2 GB)

But I'd appreciate to hear any pros and/or cons from you guys before I actually buy it
(guess I dont have to ask what IanL thinks :) )

    Cheers
