  1. I was shocked not too long ago to discover how the price of kits had skyrocketed. When I was a kid, even a good kit could be had for about a buck. Yeah, I know; when I was a kid just about everything was radically cheaper. But the price on kits was still pretty inexpensive in the 1980s. Not any more...

    Michael

Very expensive now yes.  I have 3 boxes of unfinished models.  1 Box contains everything for my Africa Korps Diorama.  Sdkfz 9 "Famo" ($110.00), an 88mm Flak Gun ($35.00),  X2 SPW 222& 223, ($50.00) X1 Pz IV (Short Barrel 75mm $38.00) x 2 Pz III short barrel 50mm @ $35-38each), and 1 Opel Truck $10.00).  Some building, troops, and some other stuff for a make shift field fueling depot.   Not sure how much worth is in the box, all I know is the "Famo" was the most costly piece.  I air brush everything and then go back and add bloody hell hours of detail.

I do think as a Vehicle pack though, different transports make for more realistic encounters, especially from the German perspective, as they had transports from all over.  I believe they were still running the Ford Plant from France throughout the war, and many reenactment groups have gotten their hands on them.

As far as I know, the Schwerer geländegängiger PKW was the only successful version.  The other two were used in the rear with the gear.  I believe from Artillery and Luftwaffe units.  I guess they sorta sucked, with the exception of the PKW, which would be a great addition in a vehicle pack.

  2. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Sturm Tiger's munitions pretty much followed the vehicle?  The two crew members would be exposed while they would extract another round from beside the tank, or from a ammunition vehicle.  Like you say, its an artillery platform.  Hence the 5-7min reload time, I guess simulates this process without actually visually seeing what's going on (in a simulated process)

  3. Just speaking of vehicles for a possible vehicle pack and in this case just some the german stuff. Rather like to see some the mentioned trucks and towing vehicles than i.e a Maus, Panther F and other the never built and employed german fantasy toys. :P Captured vehicles...okay...would be not a priority on my personal wishlist though.

Not a bad idea as a vehicle pack.  I would not mind seeing the Sdkfz 7, or the sdkfz 10 transport vehicles.   I know, no armor protection, but still think it would be cool.to be added for vehicle pack.  (Transport pack)?

There are way too many SVT-40s in Red Thunder.  It was a 1941 weapon, most of them actually made prewar and the large plants switched away from them by the end of the spring of 1942.  With other prewar SVT-38s added, there were only 1.67 million Russian semi autos made through the end of the war.  In comparison, there were 8 million SMGs (6 million PPsH and 2 million PPS-43) and over 20 million Mosin Nagants (wartime production 17.5 million, but also millions on hand prewar.  Total production of Mosins back to pre WW I era is 37 million rifles, making it the most common firearm in history by a long way).

Most of the SVTs were fielded in the prewar army or in the mobilization waves that trained during 1941 and reached the front by December.  Production was less in 1942 (the large plants all switched to simpler Mosin production to maximize output in terms of weapon count) and field losses very high, far higher for small arms for the Russians, through the fall of 1942, than at any other time for them, or for any other army in history.  There therefore would not have been many left even in mid 1943, let along mid 1944 at the time of  Bagration.  Low level production was not replacing losses, it was only allowing continued use in specialized roles like designated marksman and sniper rifles.  Production ceased completely in January 1945.

As a whole war average, out of 100 men equipped with small arms only 5 or 6 would have SVTs, 28 or so would have SMGs, and 67 would have Mosins.  And that mix would be weighted more heavily away from the SVTs and toward the SMGs in the summer of 1944.  The notion that the Bagration era force would have any increased quantity of semi autos as a late war upgunning development is just completely wrong.  Upgunning instead took the form of more LMGs per company and especially many more SMGs, including full SMG formations (in the mech arm especially), and more SMGs per platoon in the line rifle formations.

Say JasonC  say will they implement this weapon The MKb 42(H)?  Supposedly it was mostly issued primarily to the Eastern Front from 1942 until the Stg44 was developed.  Is this correct, or would they still be in too small of numbers?

  5. Whenever Stingers have failed for me its always been my own darned fault. Place them too close to a wood line or building and the woods & buildings will block their LOF. Place them in a terrain depression and the surrounding hills will block LOF. AA units are the only units where you want to avoid defilade positions and place them in an open exposed position. It goes against a player's natural inclinations to keep your units safe. What other unit would you march into the middle of an open field and have him just stand there? :o :P

Well I tested the hell out of it.... Maybe it was glitch that day, because they were in OPEN Field... massive line of sites.. they just never pulled the trigger.. all the while my forces where getting decimated by Soviet helicopters.  Anyways.. after more testing.. they seem to work fine.. although I somewhat feel a little sketch whenever I hear helos and I only have 1 or 2 stinger units.  The one thing with the US. there are NO.. AA equipment besides the Stinger and Hawk systems, ... while the Russian forces are massively equipped for anti air..   This is probably true as we would most likely carry out Anti Air destruction first with Weasels etc..

Anyways this is not a complaint.. as it was more of getting my ASS handed to me by X2 Mil Mi24's or Havoc's  HOLY JESUS..... if you have no AA defense you are AOL.....

So PBEM.. make sure you have at least one Stinger team

    Semper Fi....

  6. Im starting to see a pattern in that the US Stinger seems to be completely useless against Russian aircraft...is anyone else noticing this?

Yes... they are completely useless,  Just played through the US campaign.  "Up against a Wall" I think was the name of it.  Had 3 Stinger teams deployed... they never fired a shot but the Russian helicopters took out 1 Abrams, 7 APC, and murdered probably 30 troops..... Pointless to have even deployed their dumbasses.  Replayed it a few more times (saved game).. but never had one launch.  Checked their inventory and nothing.  I have to say though the Russians have a at least 2-3 Helos maybe in that scenario...

  7. Carl, looks like you and I are destined never to meet in a PBEM game then, and that's too bad because I respect some of the things you have done for the game.  But I refuse to play people who demand to play to the last whether they are winning or losing (and I've seen both)... there comes a point where the end result is obvious and continuing the game has nothing to offer other than stroking the winning side's ego.  This is why I prefer to play ex- or serving military, they have the same attitude, almost to a man as I do.

I suggested the cease fire for sure as I saw that there was no way I could win this one and continuing would not add much to the story.  I did everything I could to ensure that Baneman got a victory, I moved off of all the objective locations to make sure I received no points and made sure my units could not fire on his (to the best of my ability).  If this doesn't satisfy your blood lust, well...

I totally agree. My pal and I are both vets, and we cease fire if it becomes completely obvious... I realistically call this a "Tactical Retreat from the battlefield" of sorts.  We have fun.. no harm done, and we start up a new game whenever possible.

    Semper Fi.

  8. Just picked up Black Sea and then began a search for mods..... Lots of scenarios out there, but little out there in mods.  Looked on Repository and Few good Men area for Mods.. Did not see any for Smoke although its pretty good stock, Tracer rounds, Explosions or Fire of burning vehicles.  Maybe its still fairly new, and I know the modding community is large, probably busy with The Blitzkrieg Ardennes offensive.... lol...  Anyways expected to see a lot more as in possibly TAC unit insignia for Vehicles, maybe a Delta Special Forces uniform weapon mod??  Spetznaz etc.. Unless there is another place I have not looked yet...

  9. So only AP rounds from an MG will pierce their armor with a frontal shot?

BTW...if my MG team grabs the halftrack's extra AP ammo, will they use that before the regular non-AP ammo they're issued?

Yes I believe they usually go through the AP ammo first.  But I have not recently verified that.  But they do use it.

  10. I also agree that Vehicle Crews become casualties far to quickly due to Small Arms, and CM really needs to look into solving this issue...Your Mod, Skwabie, atleast takes this in the right direction.

I have to concur with this as well... they have little life expectancy.. which may be the case but when fired at they either do not button up on their own, or they get picked off way too easily it seems.

  11. Wow Skwabie what an amazingly good job!

Since day 1 I was wondering how the Panther could be penetrated so easily by hitting the mantlet. You probably have discovered a hugely important bug. The developers should gift you the next game.

I have been wondering this myself.. Even at some of the ranges I was like.. WOW... impressive... most impressive.  Lost a lot of King Tigers due to Front Mantle penetrations.. anyways awesome work.  I wonder how many other tanks need fixing.

  12. Two questions here:

What are these armored cars that fire what looks to be a flash at night and yet acts like a grape shot against infantry?

How close do I have to be with an MG42 to kill it with a frontal shot, and does being in a 2nd story building or higher at around 100-200m away help with armor penetration?

I know for sure the M8, and Stuart tanks fire Canister shot.  If you have the ability to supply your MG42 teams with AP ammo, do so.  I have ripped apart many crews in M8 scout cars and even the M3 halftracks.  So if you have SPW 251/1 halftracks you can supply your MG42 squads with AP ammo.  Its what I do if I have either the vehicles in a mission, or even QB.  1 halftrack has I think 2000 rounds of AP.  Obviously range is a key factor and canister shot is pretty devastating.

  13. I am starting to like ATG's more and more.. very difficult to spot and if you control their cover arc so they don't give their position away and are in Hide.. you can do some good damage.. depending on how you set them up of course.  The only downside is if the enemy has a FO... and any Arty... Mobile is great however, I am just really appreciating the difficulty in spotting ATG's.  They usually get the first 3 shots off before you even see them sometimes.

  14. The maker used some original methods, which superbly explained the the flow of the battle - no easy task given its size. It's a shame the video has only had a 147 views, he'd probably get far more if he posted it on YouTube.

I played out Wittmann's Demise last year H2H, and managed to make it to the end with Black Knight alive and kicking.

SPOLIER: I adopted very different tactics though to the film maker. I almost totally avoided the centre apprach across the large wideopen field in the middle where Wittman met his demise in RL. Instead, I assaulted the Canadian Sherman's head on over to the far left with the Tigers (the advantage being the tigers flanks are protected when attacking along the left flank due to the terrain), eventually breaking through the Cabadian lines and enabling me to swing my tiger assault right. Meanwhile over on the far right, when the reinforcements arrived, I pushed the grenadiers supported by panthers and MkIVs through the apple orchards and and on into the village.

I agree, they should upload it to Youtube.  Since people search Wittmann all the time I am sure it would get plenty of views and Battlefront would probably even get more sales, as many have no idea this lovely game is out there.
