  1. Piggdogg, excuse me for butting in but I'm new here, and wonder if you can fill me in on this Poor Old Spike character who everybody seems to be talking about? All i know is that he's the retired Rugged Defense Ladder Leader and is apparently invincible, yet the word on the street is that you've had the guts to take him on in several recent fun games. Is he really as good as people say,or as perverted and mad as a hatter like others claim,or what? And did you win against him?
  2. Might also be worth bearing in mind that a tank out of all its ammo types will count for nothing when deciding flag ownership.
  3. Of all the mods I've downloaded, the only absolutely essential one is the gridded terrain set. It drapes a faint 20-metre square grid over the map to allow instantaneous judging of perspective/contours/ranges. (Oh and you might also like to use the "Transparent Ruins" mod to be able to see infantry amid collapsed rubble)
  4. Yes,in real life the terrain isn't gridded because it doesn't need to be,as our eyes and brain are fully used to being able to gauge perspective and contours. But computer-terrain on a flat screen is another matter, and grids give us help in judging ranges and contours etc at a glance. Of all the terrain mods available, grids are the only ones that in my opinion are absolutely essential

  6. Abstracted windows positions in buildings also seem to play a part in command LOS. Try placing your unit around the room until he's in command.
  7. Hey Louie, you say you're not interested in gridded terrain mods? I'm sure your opponents appreciate you handicapping yourself like that!

  9. Go to the 3D view of the map,mouse-click to select a flag and hit "P". Then click anywhere on the map to plant it
  10. Is this a caption competition? How about-"See comrade,I told you Molotovs are meant for throwing at tanks, not for trying to stoke our barbecue"
  11. Clark will be remembered in one of two ways, depending on which of two schools of thought you subscribe to:- 1 -He brilliantly recognised that his capture of Rome (rather than cutting off large German forces elsewhere) would give a tremendous morale-boosting shot in the arm to the troops about to invade Normandy on D-Day. 2 -By taking Rome instead of cutting them off meant they were let off the hook to reposition. Historians will continue debating it for evermore.Certainly the taking of Rome would have electrified the D-Day troops:-"Romes fallen! Clarks got Rome!" and that news would undoubtedly have been in the forefront of their minds as they stormed ashore in Normandy. Incidentally,Clark had the "ROMA" city-limits roadsign shipped back to the States after the war and set up in his garden! [ July 30, 2003, 03:17 PM: Message edited by: Steppe Butcher ]
  12. Many exciting WW2 newsreel shots show tanks advancing with friendly infantry following huddled close behind each vehicle for cover, and its a pity AFVs give no such cover in cmbb so we could simulate that tactic.
  13. A neat little book called "Sniper" published about 12 years ago (I think) talks us through the whole world history of the subject, bravely not glossing over the gory bits, hence we read of men with half their head blown off taking hours to die.. By the way,the well-known and much-hated Brit business tycoon Robert Maxwell was a sniper for a while during WW2,and I think the experience badly scarred him mentally for the rest of his life almost to the point of insanity, although he never admitted it. He vanished overboard from his luxury yacht in the Atlantic, and although his naked body was later recovered, nobody is sure whether it was suicide or accident. Poor guy.
  14. In a recent game,my Russian opponent had 2 Armoured cars sitting behind a small clump of heavy woods, and although my 81 mortar had no LOS to them, I ordered it to lay down an area barrage into the woods, hoping that some shells would scatter onto them, which is exactly what happened! Scatter plus shrapnel spraying down onto them from treebursts killed them both inside 1 turn! The moral is-Scatter can be GOOD!
  15. Re rates of fire, yes it would be great if mortars (and ALL weapons in fact) had a "slow/normal/fast" rate of fire option. This option is available in the old Harpoon naval game series, where you can set the SAM rate of fire to engage incoming airborne threats.
