  1. This is an excellent set of charts. I saved it immediately. Are there any other charts like this available?
  2. There have been times, where I've been so frustrated with how far an LOS can be traced through *woods*, that I almost stopped playing the game. Right now, to soothe my frustration, when I play a QB or create my own scenario, I use light trees and night.
  3. Hmm. I didn't even think about the seasons affecting an LOS through trees. However, I'm still not clear on how CM defines "woods." I still say, that woods should easily obstruct an LOS. Twenty-five meters through woods in the spring and summer seems like a lot, especially when the units aren't moving or firing.
  4. Can someone help me out with understanding the CM concept of trees? I understand that things are abstracted, but it can get very frustrating nonetheless. I understand scattered trees are just a few trees here or there, with some brush. Are tall pines the same as scattered trees, just taller and a different kind of tree? Just what is the CM definition of woods? Woods are extremely frustrating to me. I imagine woods as a whole lot of trees and brush that obstruct an LOS very easily. That doesn't seem to be the case with CM. It gets really old seeing an LOS go through forty meters of woods to spot infantry that's hiding, not moving, and not firing. Am I just not understanding the CM abstraction of woods or is their abstraction simply unrealistic, needing a whole lot of improvement?
  5. I agree with some of the things posted above. The infantry in CMBO does seem to be capable of running for long periods of time without tiring. I've also noticed that MGs seem to be pretty ineffective. Is artillery really unrealistically devastating? Mortars seem to be as weak as MGs. I also wish the AI played better. I wish CMBO had the advanced engine and improvements CMBB has. The Western Front is of far more interest to me than the Eastern. It would have been more enjoyable to play that part of the war with the better game. I also have an "oldish" computer, so buying CMBB or CMAK might not be an option for me until I can upgrade.
  6. I have CMBO SE. From these forums, I can tell that CMBB is a better game. Just how much better is it and what makes it so? I enjoy CMBO, but will purchase CMBB if it's really that much better. Thanks.
  7. I'm willing to play CMBO against someone. I'm fairly new to the game and have only played the AI. You can email me at: sanok 29 at hotmail dot com I wrote the address that way out of the habit of protecting against spam.
  8. Thank you. I do have a friend that's good with tinkering with computers. I'm sure we'll be able to do something that will help.
  9. I'm having trouble finding this at the CMHQ site.
  10. Yesterday, I asked about why CMBO SE has so much lag in the action phase, where the picture freezes, then jumps ahead about 5-30 seconds, making larger scenarios unplayable for me. Several of you replied, asking specifically about the video card from my computer. Here are its specs: Intel Celeron processor 733 MHz Intel 810 Chipset, 66 MHz FSB 20 GB HDD 64 MB SDRAM (1 DIMM available for upgrade up to 256MB) 56K* ITU v.90 PCI internal Fax/Modem Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Built-in 48x Max. CD-ROM; 3.5" 1.44 MB FDD Keyboard; Mouse; Stereo Speakers Intel 82801 AC '97 Audio Intel Direct 3D 2x AGP (shared memory) 2 USB ports (1 on front bezel); 1 Serial; 1 Parallel; Midi/Game, Midi/Game; 2 PS/2
  11. Yes, I have CMBO SE. With that, 64 RAM isn't enough? Ugh. When I find my computer manual, I'll post the info about my video card.
  12. I've been having an irritating problem with playing CMBO. During the action phase, the computer does what my son calls 'lags.' After clicking GO, the computer clicks a lot and the picture freezes for anywhere from five to thirty seconds, then jumps ahead. Sometimes it's fine after that, but sometimes it does it again. When I play smaller scenarios, it doesn't do it often, but enough to be upsetting. Medium scenarios are almost unplayable, as it lags more often and for longer times. Large and huge scenarios are totally impossible to play. I have an eMachines with a 733 processor, 64 RAM and a 56k modem. I would need to find the manual to look up what kind of video card I have. I downloaded and installed DirectX 8. I use fast and compatible for smoke and the lowest tree setting. I'm pretty computer illiterate, so any help would be *greatly* appreciated.
  13. I also thought that it had to have been another unit I never saw, like a PIAT. It was just a shocking and amazing coincidence to see the tank suddenly turn into a barbecue pit at the exact moment the infantry squad fired at it.
  14. While playing the Germans against the Polish in a quick battle, I just had a Panzer IVJ destroyed by small arms fire from an infantry squad at 73 meters. What's up with that? I replayed the turn and watched the infantry squad walking towards some scattered pines, turn to the left to face the tank, raise their rifles and fire for one second, and return to their course as the panzer erupted in flames. I checked the squad's weapons and they had eight rifles, one submachine gun and a light machine gun. I'm baffled at this one.
  15. Pop up tanks (from behind a hill crest, building, etc.) at widely spaced intervals at slightly different times. As most german tanks have slower turrets (or none for STuGs, TDs) they will slowly turn to engage the first tank to pop up. Of course, you've set your tank to reverse back to cover after taking a shot or two (this is the rough equivalent of the "shoot 'n scoot" command in CMBB). While the german tank is turning in it's hopefully vain attempt to shoot at tank #1, tank #2 pops out from cover on the other flank and gets a shot or two at his side. Make sure to give tank #2 a command delay so he doesn't pop out too soon! Of course, he will be set to reverse also in case he doesn't get a kill. How does one "write the order" to do this?
  16. In the hard drive of my computer, there is a file called Scenarios. I'm assuming I can click on any scenario on the disk and read about it. However, when I do, I am asked to select a program to open it. Nothing I select will do so. Does anyone know how to open these files? Sanok the Computer Illiterate
  17. I actually thought of something like that. I suppose it's *possible* the panzer CO saw the Sherman through a window, through the building, and through yet another window.... I wish I had a picture of the situation. I never thought to take a screenshot.
  18. I'm brand new to CMBO. Someone told me about the game and I tried the demo. I then purchased the Special Edition a few days ago. Over all, it's an incredible game. However, I wonder sometimes about the lines of sight determination being unrealistic at times. In a recent game, a German tank knocked out a Sherman it never should have been able to see. The panzer was on a small hill and the Sherman was in a small gully. It was also about thirty meters behind a two-story building. The German tank hit the Sherman from 320 meters away. The target line actually went through the corner of the building. I looked at things from the perspectives of both tanks and from many different angles. The Sherman just should not have been spotted. It was ridiculous that it was. I've seen numerous questionable LOS sightings. This one was just the worst. Is there some explanation for this or is it just the way it is in the game?
