  1. Have you used any mods? It's possible that you may have overwritten or deleted the wav files for the tank sounds? Does the game play fine otherwise?
  2. I'm really looking forward to this! Thanks for all your hard work!
  3. One more question for my own edification - do the Combat Mission games use Direct3D, or OpenGL? Just want to know which settings to adjust in my display properties. TIA.
  4. Managed to get through from home just fine - so perhaps it was the firewall at work... D/l was slow at first (3K on cable?!?) but all 10 of them didn't take long when all was said and done. Let's see how they sound!
  5. Myu machine runs acceptably cool between September-May. But in the summer, it gets warmer than I'd like - not hot enough to shut down, but enough that I am leery of running anything demanding like graphically-intensive games. I've got mine in a Lian-Li aluminum case with two big fans in front and one in the rear - as well as a slot fan near the graphics card. There's room for a blowhole fan but I need some of those plastic rivets to mount it - self-threading screws just don't seem to work on this case. Add in rounded IDE cables and it should run cool all the time. But it doesn't. the motherboard itself is fine - usually 31-34'C year round... but the processor (An Athlon XP 1800+) can get up to 65'C or more in the summer. Right now it stays at 49-53'C even after a night of gaming. I suppose location matters - my desk is in an alcove in the living room, over the staircase to our upper flat. There are no windows so airflow in the area is not the best. In the summer the corner gets warm, but in the winter the stairway makes a nice cold zone and I almost need to dress for thew outdoors! I guess that's one good thing about Buffalo winters - I'll never have to worry about the machine running too hot
  6. I may have to go back to those, then. If I can (my computer is very finicky about changing drivers for some reason - I know how to do it, but my PC doesn't like to change  ) I tried to update to the 41.03 (or was it .30?) drivers last night, no luck. After some trial and error in CMBO, I think it's the anti-aliasing, not the aniso that causes the problem. It works fine once in the game itself, it's just the text on the battle screens, passwords, and "loading 3-D graphics" that are invisible. I found that alt-tab to the desktop and then back into the game does solve the problem - but I agree that shouldn't be necessary. And I'm just kind of reluctant to go back because I use this machine mainly for first-person shooters, and the added performance in those has been noticable. Thanks for the advice, nonetheless.
  7. I just downloaded it last night and installed it - haven't had a chance to play CMBB yet to see what it looks like. Hello to Mikser! Fancy seeing you here
  8. Does anyone know which bmp file is for the muzzle brake? I suppose a short-term solution would be to simply replace it with the original texture. If anyone know, please post it so we can do that? Thanks.
  9. I still can't seem to get to the Mod database from here - maybe it's the firewall at work?
  10. The beta 40.72s are working for me in CMBB (at least they have so far). I have not yet installed the WHQL certified ones as I don't want to "fix" what ain't broken... My only problem is that anti-aliasing and/or anisotropic filtering seems to totally screw up the display. Which sucks because my system is more than capable of pushing a decent framerate in these games even if I maxxed them out. Darn
  11. I just bought the bundle, so I play both. I like them both - CMBB looks better, CMBO has the Western Front where I can play as Americans - surely each has several appealing features. It's not as if it's illegal to play (and like) both, right?
  12. I find both of them to be great games, but given the incredible amount of shovelware out there, I don't buy any game anymore until I've played the demo. Been burned too many times in the days before broadband  Given the "no returns" policy for the CM games, I especially wanted to be sure of it. It's good to be an educated consumer
  13. Someone really should make a mod for this, just for kicks. I know some of the WWII shooters I play have done maps based on the "army guys in the little boy's room" where battles are carried out on beds, dressers, shelves and desks... surely a wargame could bring back the "tabletop" look for those of us who miss the nostalgic days before computer games I have a feeling that this is the first gaming forum I've been on where I'm not significantly older than most everyone else (35).
  14. I'd certainly purchase one, as well. I just bought both CM games, and anything that helps me to be a better player is surely worth the money. (Aside from experience, and you can't buy that)
  15. I think this is a good place to comment on this: I placed my order for the Combo pack on Friday 11/1. They had it in the mail on Monday and it got to me by Wednesday. Three business days on an internet order is GREAT! I was very pleased to have it so soon.
  16. I was kind of disappointed by the GI Comabt demo. Even the "training" scenarios don't really seem to show you how to do something. The game looks great, but it's equally important (if not moreso!) that it is easy and enjoyable to play. Ah, well. Freedom's loss is BTS' gain - I was searching for a good WWII strategy game, I tried demos for the Close Combat Series, GI combat, etc. and the only ones I liked were the Combat Mission games. So instead of Freedom Games getting my money, BTS did If they fix up GI Combat and it turns out to be an enjoyable game, well then I'll buy that too. But the demo didn't sell me on it like the CMBO and CMBB demos did!
  17. I won't dispute that - I was speaking solely of the processor itself. I mean, that's how they are rated, right? Cycles per second - on/off, 1/0, however you slice it. I will agree that the "rated speed" and the practical gain in performance are not necessarily equal. I also think anyone who uses old hardware like that with a P4 2.8 probably deserves to be flogged
  18. I have a GeForce4 Ti4600, and it's run both Combat Mission games fine so far! If you are looking for the best mix of performance and value, the Ti4200 cannot be beat!
  19. (please forgive the posting of this in multiple threads, but I have an answer!) I was told there was a problem with the drivers as originally released. If you downloaded them prior to November 11 and you are having problems, please go to the nVidia site and download the fixed version of the 40.72 drivers. I hope this helps! 20. Maybe not - but is a car that's going 120mph three times faster than a car going 40mph? Of course it is. A 1.5 GHz processor is capable of performing three times more calculations per second than a 500MHz chip. How the software utilizes that extra power may vary, but the raw data is correct.

  23. Hi, I'm HeadHunter, an FNG... unlurking here Just wondering - isn't there a way to make this thread a "sticky" thread so that it's always on the front page? the other forums I've participated in have had that ability. My apologies if I'm out of line here.
