  1. I agree, HQ's are presented as support units to excute tactics and add logistic support but each HQ did have the ability to defend itself in every manner with Air defense capabiliy and ground support even though it was minimal, it still existed!!! As for adding more to the HQ role I believe it serves itself well in "SC" as it is currently. To Overhaul HQ's and have theater commanders and lesser would just over complicate the game. When you look at the game for what it is, it was never designed nor intended to become more detailed than it is now! Jersey John your looking for something like "War in Russia" or something like that? SC II could be and maybe it will be more detailed but really it should be an addition to SC not something in of itself!
  2. summland : Dito on that idea Summland!! Something to achieve other than defeating your opponent. How will rating work?? People sign up to play or look for opponent? more, more, more!!!!
  3. I have seen this mentioned before but what is HOI ???
  4. Human vs AI ????? IMO - Your right the "AI" is there 24 hours a day, but, once you have played against the "AI" 2 or 3 maybe 20 times by then you will have grown tired of it and you will! When this happens you will have developed the ability to beat the "AI" and understand its Strategies depending on your actions within your game play(by the way the strategies in SC are just set patterns within the "AI"'s algorithm and they will not learn nor gain experience from game play over time) . With this the "AI"'s ability to be competitive against you will grow weaker and weaker till it no longer interest you?? Therefore, you will hopefully develop a need to play against "Real Live!" opponents! and not some programs "AI" Human play can pose a greater challenge than some realize (sometimes you get that jerk who thinks he's cute with his/her new Gamey strategy which really only works against the "AI" and not a Human opponent!!! )and because of this the skill level of each opponent you encounter will result in different strategies posed against you, this IMO will and should always outweigh your decision to play that of the "AI" overall, to think the "AI" will or can try new strategies with each new game play is well you know !! There are many good players among the "SC" community each with there own strategies and with that I recommend to you that you at least try playing one or some of them out there by either TCP/IP or PBEM!! Yes there are some out there that only want to put another notch on their game board but some truly want competitive game play like myself! For those that have found the loop hole in the game, they should point that out to Hubert so that he may entertain the idea to correct it, but if you think that the game should be played Historically and not allow for the odd strategies that’s just Crazy, the whole Idea was to challenge all the possible "What if scenarios??" that could have happened in History!!! Is that not why we play these games????
  5. LOL funny guy this JerseyJohn is...... MKCTANKER your SC will arrive soon no more than 2 - 5days also "AI" in SC is as good as it gets in my opinion! Start easy with the "AI" till you get the feel for the game then open it up or better yet play against Human opponents this will improve your game play fast plus you get to see what everyone elses stratgies are. Let me know if you want to PBEM or TCP/IP I'll be waiting with my tanks, air, navy, troops, HQ's...........sorry about that, let me know, thanks! - Heith
  6. Heres my 2cents on this; The German attack on France should be concentrated on one hex at a time(get as many units on one hex including Air!) and you should ignore the Maginot Line altogether! The French will give up the line once you pass on by to Paris! Hit Belgium and take it in one turn, then turn due south towards the Resource hexes chopping away until you get to Paris. Take note of the Channel, the Allies love to swipe at straglers along the coast. Plus be aware of the French Armies they are powerful enough to deystroy any unit you have since they are still young. Best to keep the French Defending at all times! In short you should hit France right after Poland unless you are confident you can take Denmark as you ferry your troops across to the Lowlands then off to France! I do not agree with some of the other posts about rolling tanks across land to France, I suggest you operate them to the front as soon as possible they are your punch if used correctly. thanks
  7. cyclem -------- In my opinion leave Britain alone unless you intend on invading her! You can take care of her later if Russia falls? Russia is still hard to take when in the hands of a good allied player so most of your forces will be fighting/defending the good fight there and not on the western front! As for Russia, your force is way to small! I have beaten the "AI" at every level but with Normal Bonus! Again the AI can never replace that of a Human, so if you would like email me your opening AXIS move @ redy82nd@pacbell.net for PBEM ! [ November 18, 2002, 01:41 PM: Message edited by: 82ndReady ]
  8. Hey how about these good movies: The Big Red 1 Empire of the Sun Hart's War U-571 Enigma The Fat man & Little Boy (Manhattan Project) all of these for sure need nods ! - Heith [ November 14, 2002, 03:13 PM: Message edited by: 82ndReady ]
  9. I have been in many games recently as the Allies and have seen the Germans stepping all over Neutral contries and pludering there MPP's they then build up there TECH to an ungodly rapid pace and Level in many fields in a very short period of time which then makes the Germans unstoppable! This game is already Pro-German and it takes a very good allied player to beat a good German player. Who here on this Forum agrees with me that this needs to be changed in some way? I suggest slowing down Tech and adding gearing limits! A country has only so much resource and manpower, once another country has been conqured there manpower and resource could be added to the victors! - Heith
  10. Immer Etwas & Zeres I'm somewhat new to this game and I agree with the both of you 100%! Newbies are still newbies though but should not be considered poor players, rather they may have experience from playing for years with board games and not PC's. What you may have applied when playing Military board games you will still apply in SC! I never underestimate nor talk down to opponents just because I have a few more weeks at playing this game than others! So I raise my cup to both of you "Here, Here! - Heith
  11. Some_God This Game is worth $25.00 and then some! It will provide you with game play that will change every time whether you’re playing against the "AI" or a Human opponent. It's challenging, simple and complex all rolled into one great game! I will guarantee you won't be wasting your time or money. Look on your shelf and count how many games you no longer play that sit there and collect dust and how much did they all cost? This game will provide you with strong competitive game play over and over again! Hubert(the creator)has supplied patches and upgrades on demand for his gaming public without delay. My hats off to Mr.Hubert and this fine company for providing quality games that the board gaming industry gave up on! Buy the game! Play the game! And believe me when I say this you got it at a "bargain price"! Let me know when your ready to play because i'm available to play! - Heith
  12. dougmangin I agree 100% that you should be given the option to choose which Air battles you wish to fight and not to fight! One Air battle may be worth fighting than another and being able to pick and choose your Air battles is important to most players. This is a well designed game and this change could add just that much more flavor to an already Great game! Even if you do not include this in your next Mod to SC, in my opinion I believe we all can live with this as is! Hubert, I want to thank you for making this game and hope to see more from you and this company in the near future!
  13. Gamey, I have heard this term used over and over about game play that is considered not ahistorical or in my terms "Very cheesie!". When playing SC against a human opponent is it not about winning? I always except defeat as long as it was within the rules of the game by which they won, shame on me for not thinking of it first! So when someone uses a move that should not be allowed in the game, is this what were calling "Gamey" or is it really more about that it was not "Historical" and therfore should not be allowed????
  14. Out of all of the responses I have read in this thread this is what I think would make for a good Russian defense plan mixed with a little experience: Put up a light to modest defense around the first line of cities in the west. (This will only slow but not stop any good German player!) Drop all of your tanks and planes back to Moscow or the Finnish border which then you can then use them in taking Finland, maybe(does not always happen)! Build up Anti-Tank levels to Tech 2 if you can spare the MPP's. Put every MPP you can into Corp Infantry or Army infantry(my experience is to stick with Corp construction, in the open there cheap and die fast, stick Armies into cities fast this will build up there entrenchment levels!)if you can afford it. This will slow down and protect mother Russia till the US can get in and create a 2nd front, when that happens it's all downhill from there for the Germans. Not to say that it will be a walk in the park, you still have to play well to beat any competent German player and there are quite a few out there believe me! Decide where and when to make your stand (usually happens in front of Moscow and Stalingrad, funny how that happens!)with your infantry, best to do this when you think the Gemrans are over extending themselfs and out of sync with there Generals and Air Power(keep your eyes peeled for this, because this will happen even to the best of German players!). Use cities as hinge pins and build out from there with infantry in straight lines from city to city. Use marsh and woods to your advantage. No matter what you do, the Germans will always gain exp, but, so will you in the end. My experience is sometimes its not how you played in Russia thats the problem, but that it may have started earlier in the game, as it has happened to me in past games! I want to thank everyone who has answered this thread and I hope that it has helped newbies understand that there are many different ways to defend Russia depending on, and always will depend on your Opponents skill level! - Heith - Allies forever!
  15. Cluster Defence??? I've tried the cluster defence around cities and yes! it is true it takes a couple of turns to reduce it, but this just makes it easier for the German tanks to slide around and exploit the holes left behind. The Germans infantry are then left behind to mop up the cities as I would also do if I were playing the Germans! I believe the best defence is the "checkerboard flypaper" defence I use to play when playing "Panzergruppe Guderian", this will get the German committed to moving forward and slugging it out, this may work after reading all of the rest of the responses!
  16. "Mannerheim" your right about what "Urgrue" had to say, very good information and I will try those ideas out!
  17. lwchen and ALL: The problem is not that you can afford the losses, the question remains on how to stop the Germans, they will always exploit the holes in your lines and seep through with armor but how do you stop this? Is the answer staggered lines of INF with armor peppered through or what?? And I did read all the responses up to this point and what I got is this "throw infantry into the fray and pray!!" Is there any method by which to go by since every game is different to defend in russia and hope to then roll back the Germans later or is it hopeless??? I would really like to hear from the Creator of this game on this one but I'm sure hes to busy, but please more experienced player give me your input! 18. The heading says it all! Is there a good defense out there for the Russians to use as a guideline? My current tactics have failed, Germans invade and I hold the initial line, then before it is completely destroyed I withdraw what’s left to cluster around city’s or resource hex’s. While the Germans mop them up I’m building up my reserves along the eastern most side of the map in the last city’s awaiting the Germans to over extend themselves to counterattack, this does not work? By the time they reach these lines there have gained exp and take all I have to destroy a meager 2-3 units! what to do?
  19. Fog of War "On" Without it surprise attacks would never be able to happen and you would always know your opponents next possible move, where's the fun in that?
  20. Hubert, If you do consider increasing the size of SC, then if you would also consider adding more types of units to the pool. In particular Para units and home guard units, they both could be considered half the size of corp. units(maybe)and Para. units could have half the range of fighters. Just an idea! All in all I wanted to say that this a great game and I enjoy playing it. [ October 21, 2002, 12:15 PM: Message edited by: 82ndReady ]
