How to evict those Russian SMG units?
Joques replied to Joques's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Ok, y'all were right about the walls thing. I tried again and set up my troops (BTW not veteran like I said, but regulars, oops...) behind the walls. I just thought they needed to have "wall" in their location window to benefit from teh cover, honest mistake Of course now the SMG squads weren't as invincible as they first seemed. I mean, they pack a wallop at short range, but they can be taken out. So the whole point of my thread, it seems, has evaporated. Oh well, thanks for the tips, guys. -
GameSpot Review Out (Take 2)
Joques replied to Darren J Pierson's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The ability to map your own keys would be very handy, though. Like somebody said, AltGr 8 and AltGr 9 means I don't ever use zoom. Now it I could remap zoom to, say, PgUp and PgDn... -
How to evict those Russian SMG units?
Joques replied to Joques's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The SMG's were in fact on ground level. Still... Is it a fact that height advantage will negate Wall protection? Seems odd to me. If I'm crouching behind a wall, they'd have to have a pretty darn great height advantage over me to negate the protection. Could somebody confirm this? No arty, no armor. No smoke. I do have a coupla flamers, but getting close enough to use them is another matter. -
Hi, I'm currently playtesting a Stalingrad scenario, and I must say going up against those Russian SMG-armed squads is like ramming your head into a wall. Example: I had a company of rifle squads behind a wall (65m away from the building), ready to lay down suppressing fire while the panzerpioneers got up close an personal. I hit "GO", and within two seconds my ENTIRE company of VETERAN rifle squads are at least shaken, and several are panicking. Ok, so maybe 65m is too close. (Or am I placing too much trust in Walls when it comes to protection? Or am I even using them correctly? My troops looked like they were embedded inside the wall and their location said "wall". That's when you get the cover, right?) Thing is, if you don't get fairly close, then the Russians will simply keep concealment and it's a stalemate. Even if you do run a sacrificial halfsquad up close and the Russians start firing (and it isn't even a given that the AI will bother firing at a pesky scouting halfsquad - excellent AI programming there by the way), you don't even have a full minute to blast him with all you've got before he gets concealment again. And you can't just stand back and area fire at every location where you suspect there are Russians. You'll run out of ammo before Turn 15. So there you have it. Does anybody have a clue about how to evict those pesky Russians? (And BTW - were the Russians the only ones to have dedicated SMG squads?)

Status of ASL conversion scenarios?
Joques replied to GJK's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
This sounds so good! It seems to me that many ASL-CB conversions are just a direct port of the maps and the forces, squad by squad. Many would-be conversionists don't realize that the systems are different enough that the conversions need several rounds of playtest and balancing, and also extra work on the maps to look real in the CM 3D environment. I tried myself, realized my artistic limitations when it came to mapmaking, and gave up. It is a good thing that ASL Vet thinks that the job is worth doing right. Also, I REALLY like the themed battles idea. Immersion is heightened greatly by putting the battles in historic perspective. I would be happy to help with playtest in any way I can, though for the time being I play only solo vs the AI. [ October 27, 2002, 04:16 PM: Message edited by: Joques ] -

Nooooo...!! Why did I have to find CMBB on a shelf NOW?!
Joques replied to Joques's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Whoa! That's the first time I've seen SIX squads practically wiped off the face of teh Earth in ONE minute! I guess I must really suck, huh. I did get a draw on my first attempt at Hill 312 though. -
Wrong graphics for the SPW 251/17 flak vehicle?
Joques replied to Bone_Vulture's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Quite prevalent, it would seem. IS-3 is a dead ringer for IS-2. T-44 also seems to share model with one of the other tanks. -

Hats off to Wolfe. This stuff is frighteningly comprehensive. I shudder to think how much work went into it. Good man!! -

Joques replied to Joques's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
That's the timeframe where I will be doing nothing else. I DO plan however to resume my life by then and play CMBB in moderation. That is a truly scary thought (and I thought ASL'ers were nerds... ) -
troops seek cover in buring buildings?
Joques replied to Nick Carter's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
The game now distinguishes between "small flames" that don't make the location uninhabitable, and "large flames" that are impassable. I just read it in the manual yesterday! -

How to overcome Germany's "No SS allowed" laws?
Joques replied to Joques's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Jonp: Well... Like I said, I don't care much for SS-adoring geeks. In fact, swastikas don't do it for me at all, even in the context of WWII. I downloaded the swastika unit markers, but after one game I went back to the ol' trusty Balkankreuz. Reason for this: I don't think I've ever seen a tank marked with a swastika, they all used the balkankreuz. It all comes down to immersion and what feels right. That's why I take exception to renaming units and pretending that a part of history never happened...but this is kinda straying away from the topic of Tips&Tricks...
