  1. Jesus H Simpson I hope not!!! I'll have a good de dust and see if that works... G
  2. Odd one this - after untold hundreds of turns without a problem, suddenly I am getting lots of CMBB hangups. The graphics start to 'flicker' on individual terrain features such as houses, swamps, trees, etc, and then the whole thing freezes solid. Any ideas? Grum
  3. I am playing against the AI (pride of the lufft) and one of my MG bunkers takes a few hits from russkie tanks. First hit..nothing. Second hit, message comes up one the bunker - "2 Night is falling". now what the hell does THAT mean? Grum btw, the scenario is timed at midday
  4. Here we go - a real live test of your knowledge, and maybe some useful lessons for newcomers. It comes live from one of the PBEMS i'm playing, so is a test against a 'real' human. I am about to lay down a bunch of 120mm off-board mortars (blast 125)on between 8-12 squads of german infantry who are going to be advancing tightly bunched together through a wood. Heh Heh. Question is - anybody care to guess the effect? The spotter has 40 rounds, will fire (i think) about 16 rounds in the first turn, and he cost 110 points (4tube, radio)..will he inflict damage equal to his value? I'll keep you posted. Grum
  5. Yeah, look up my thread and see how I used scoot and shoot and lost 2 T34s in short flaming spiky order... Grumlin
  6. Looking at this again I think that Kampfgruppe 2 in the middle is going to get its arse chewed off in all that open ground. I would have thrown it up the left flank as a follow on to the first kampf. $0.002 G
  7. Quick update on this pbem game - both T34s are now dead. Grum
  8. Good answers so far guys. However, the t34s did NOT fire before ending the fast move bit (I planned the LOS very carefully) and neither were shocked or shaken. Obviously the ones that got blown up by the tiger after 13-14 seconds were upset, but thats a different kettle of fish... G
  9. Nice screenie. However, I do feel that in CMBB the increased effect of defending weapons means that if you advance across the whole front against any human player, you will get chewed up. I tend to favour a refused flank attack...overwhelm the defenders by 3 or 4 to one in one area - hopefully one that is out of LOS of other areas of the map - and then wheel to roll the line up. Anyone else? Grum
  10. Part 2: It wakes up and trundles back out of sight, but not before getting a GUN DAMAGED result from what I think was an ATR. Now - why on earth did they sit there for 18 seconds, when under orders to SCOOT after firing. Any ideas. BTW, the surviving tank commander will be sent to a penal battalion...assuming he survives the rest of the battle...
  11. I would welcome comments on the problem I have just had with S&S... Two T34s were instructed to scoot up ro a ridgeline, shoot at a german tank (TIGER?), and retreat back down behind the ridge. They were side by side on a road, giving good speed and no bogging chances... The reason I did this seemingly risky maneuver was that the Tiger was targetting another t34 that was fast moving on one of its flanks, meaning that I could get a shot off before it rotated back. Indeed, the two T34s rush up, shoot, and both get hits. Two ricochets, but hey, I wasn't that hopeful, but for two 'free' shots who is arguing. Then, as I watch in horror, they sit there. And sit there. The Tiger wakes up and nails one. The second one then remembers I had given it SHOOT AND SCOOT orders, and after 18 seconds.
  12. Smoke is one of my BIG bugbears with this game. It never seems to last long enough - even with no wind it tends to disappear under 60 seconds or so. I seems to recall smoke hanging around for a lot longer when I used to use it on CCF exercises (many moons ago)and it was actually useful for masking advances...am I being a non-grog in expecting better smoke retention? I know someone will post 'USE LARGER ARTY' but even so, the 75-81mm should surely last 2-3 minutes
  13. Interesting idea bout the rush approach in CMBB - but it is, I think, based on a too simplistic assumption. Any opponent worth their salt will have armour / snipers / second AT guns hidden ready to engage oncxe you rush in. Your return fire will be relatively inaccurate, and I have seen plenty of instances of my tanks picking off fast moving enemy AFVs from flanks...... defence in depth will, as always, ruin your day. G
  14. Can someone explain why sometimes I can do preplanned arty and sometimes cant? I just bought a bunch of 120mm with the aim of dumping some turn one fun only to find I can't do it... G
  15. Ooohhhhhh!! who lives? who dies? its better than an episode of eastenders on crack (and more cheery) well done that man. G
  16. In a game recently I had a green shrek take out a t34 at 210m from the rear with his first shot...so it can happen G
  17. If I'd known how my request for an explanation as to how my STUG died like a dog would threadcreep into a slugging match between two heavyweight treadheads I never would have started it. Heres another one for ya - Have a BA70 (think its called that) haring down a dead straight road at FAST when it is targetted by an nme AT gun at 2 o'clock 1000m away. The BA throws itself into reverse JUST before it was about to enter the safe lee of a hill (as I planned) out of LOS from the gun, and gets SPLATTERED. Why do that? G
  18. AT guns are NOT too easy to spot. I had a very good game with Kimmo where 4 panthers were kept buttoned down by a 37mm in scattered trees 800m away that a LMG and a section leader - both with binocs - could NOT spot. Likewise, have just finished a PBEM where a 150mm inf gun of mine was in woods and fired all game in sight of nme without being spotted - maybe because I had a +2 stealth section leader covering him. Try using the stealth bonus on guns and see your kill ratio go up.....
  19. I agree. I am finding in CMBB as a slowly inch forwards in terms of wins vs losses, that the more I assume that EVERYTHING is going to go wrong and plan accordingly, the better I do. So, If I have a defensive line I ASSUME its going to go down, and have a second line of defence or strongpoint just in case. Case in point - I am playing as defending germans and the sovs have flanked me. My AT gun LOS to that flank was blocked by a light building, so I stuck a couple of pioneers there to demolish it with expacks if that happened - and it did . Likewise, in an attack I just won I ASSUMED each and every turn that my tanks were going to bog / get blown away, and thus planned accordingly. I won 67-33 . I even assume that smoke isnt going to land on time or on target by plotting infantry movement that uses cover as much as possible anyway - if it arrives, I straighten lines out and go for it...but if not i'm still OK. So yes, CMBB is making me more skilful.... Grum
  20. I have another issue here about starting casualties - I have just started a email game where casualty rate was set by the opponent. Its an allied probe, and when my stuff turned up i realised that i lost whole types of unit, rather than just random numbers from each type - so i paid for two vet snipers and got none, paid for 2 MG34s and got none, etc. Other units appear not to have been affected. Its not too bad as the defender, but if I was an attacker and, say, lost key compenents of the assault before the ttack i'd look pretty dumb...Is this normal? G
  21. Whoooo good replies there that make me realise that I am NOT a treadhead. However, I still lost my STUG due to stupid ammo selection by the tank crew...and no one seems to care anymore G
  22. Note to self: If i ever play against the threadstarter take a bucket of onboard mortars cos he obviously has a love affair with on board guns....look at the background to that shot above... G
  23. You think thats bad. I am creaming Mac in a QB, apart from THIS TURN when a retreating crew from an overrun gun of his gets their act together and wipes out 2 squads of pioneers that were advancing on em from under 80 feet. sheesh. and i thought the buggers only had pistols. G
  24. I have to go for the obvious one...what was the penetration rate? *sorry* Grum
  25. I would just like to say that anything spineripper says in this post or any other forum anywhere on the internet EVER is correct and I support it. With that name and the info above its the only way to be sure.... G
