  1. It's up right now and the tree mods are there. I haven't installed them yet, but I have a hunch they'll look pretty good.
  2. hhmmm ... sounds suspiciously like a poll. They should add something like that to the bb somehow I try to do something daily - and by "something" I mean work on a mod, play a battle, or (since I'm just starting) play a little PBEM. Alot depends what else is going on in the gaming world - when Day of Defeat 2.0 came out, I didn't play much CMBO. But I always come back to it; it's the most consistent game I play. CMBO is also the ideal work game. ESC minimizes it rapidly, and you can walk away from it when something work related interrupts me. I usually get about half a battle in if my schedule is light, and finish it when I come home.
  3. I mean, I understand that you have to have an ending point to the game or else both sides can sit at the edge of the map and do nothing. On the otherhand, I get very frustrated when a game ends right in the middle of some heavy action. I feels, well (forgive me) gamey. I can't imagine real battles ending after a certain period of time and both sides raising their hands and said "okay, what do you have for the score? I gotta get moving my kid has a soccer game tonight." I know it's a damned if you do damned if you don't, but inactivity seems more realistic than having a battle magically end.
  4. Damnit, I remember looking at that and thinking "I'd better copy this in case it goes away." Of course, I didn't ...
  5. Except the one bit of information I really need ... how do I get involved in this?
  6. Still play against AI, but I've only had the game since September. I'd be willing to try a PBEM game, with the understanding that I'd be gamey and probably an easy opponent.
  7. After bothering to read the first post in it's entirety ... heh. um, yeah, gamey.
  8. its rushing a very cheaply purchased vehicle towards your enemy knowing it will draw fire and expose his defenses: which then can be targeted by your heavier armament</font>
  9. Would anyone car to elaborate on what a jeep rush is?
  10. Just in case I ever decide to play an internet match - this is a fair warning. I will play gamey. You're welcome to play gamey against me. I say, "if it's in the game, do it." And by game I mean "game engine," not some abstract concept about what a "combat game" constitutes. This is because: 1) I really don't know any better. I'm not a grog, I'm a gamer. 2) My aim with CMBO is to play a game that is realistic, not model realism with a game. Of course, this isn't really an annoucement, more a question: am I alone in thinking this way? Is my attitude simply a reflection of the commercial success of CMBO - and, who is really the minority? The casual player who never visits these forums, or all you guys (God bless ya) who find it unacceptable that the buttons on the jacket of the 57th polish battaltion are the wrong size? [and that is stated with a sense of admiration, not sarcasm btw] I suspect, of course, that there are two camps here - which really is a testament to how good CMBO is - casusal gamers and serious war gamers. I wonder what the total division of CMBO players really is - 50/50? 90/10? And how do I get into one of these newbie tournaments? And will I get flamed for playing gamey?
  11. bump waiting for this mod has consumed my every thought and action. I spend my days wandering like a zombie yearning for the next moment that I have access to a PC so I can check "is it out yet?" Tonight at dinner I saw my peas on my white plate and I thought "ah ... green speckled snow." I come home from work, sit in my chair, and refresh Tom's page every 30 seconds until I fall asleep. Or something. I'm actually playing DoD 2.0. Too many good games and mods coming out as of late - this is worse than Christmas! Rally Trophy, NASCAR 2000, just finished MoHAA, ARC Fatalis - when will the insanity end?! [ February 15, 2002, 05:57 PM: Message edited by: murpes ]
  12. Well, don't leave us hanging - what modem are you getting such good results with?
  13. I've found that a good 3D card makes a world of difference with CMBO - I've played it on several machines of similar processing power, but different video cards. The difference between them being the amount of visual quality you can force onto the graphics without the choppiness when you pan around with the camera, and also the fluidity (?)and exactness in placing the waypoints. On my GF3, I run at 1024x768 with Quincux AA and hi res textures, and I hardly get any choppiness except on the largest maps in God camera view. I also play on my work laptop which has an ATI mobility - there I play with 800x600 and low-res textures, and even then it can get pretty choppy when I pan around. My friend has an older ATI All-in-Wonder (Rage 128 chip I think)and he plays at 8x6 with a mixture of hi and lo res tiles. My personal laptop doesn't have any 3D acceleration, and I have to play in software mode. Granted, it runs and it's still fun, but there is something more realistic and encompassing about playing on my "real" PC. You're right, CMBO's gameplay isn't an action game so a ultra-fast video card isn't necessary to play. But it does push polygons, and the fast card lets me make them look better. I just enables me to push it more from the "game" side of the scale closer to "simulation." [ February 12, 2002, 06:43 PM: Message edited by: murpes ]
  14. *sigh* that means the GeForce 3 I bought a few months ago for $350 should be selling for $100 soon.
  15. I was hoping to finish it this weekend, but Day of Defeat 2.0 kinda ruined my plans. This is my first mod, so I'm learning as I go. The screen shot hides it, but the tiles don't match 100% so I have to fix that. And do a winter wheat. This is all assuming that Tom's Battle of the Bulge mod isn't released because if it is forget about my PC being used for anything but winter battles. The Stuart looks like that because it models a one-of-a-kind limited production American-British joint effort used only the the 23rd division ... um, or something. TANGENT: Seriously though, unlike most people around here my WWII history knowledge is zip. I was drawn to CMBO becuas becuase it looked like a fun game (I was right!). It's the first war game I've ever played. I knew the difference between "tank" and "jeep" but that was about it. So I can be forgiving about a Brit riding around in a US tank because I don't really know the difference. But that hybrid was pretty ugly so I fixed that. If I have one criticism of CMBO (and it's about the only one), it's that there is a certain assumption about the players military knowledge. If you think a tank is a tank it can be quite frustrating trying to figure out which one to use in a given situation. Granted I can always look this stuff up, but it'd be nice to have a little paragraph in the manual to refernce while I'm in the thick of a game. /TANGENT
  16. *bump* nice long weekend coming up ... sure could go for a little winter gaming action ... especially with the lack of snow and all in the north east ... kind of a green winter, you know?
  17. If you recently bought the game, it may already be patched. My CD shipped with 1.12.
  18. I'd like to be the first to add a bump for 1/5. I'm looking forward to this mod as if it were a full game.
  19. Forget that. What I want is Combat Mission: Gettysburg. A civil war game like this would rock.
  20. Same problem, same OS, same drivers. I enable 2X AA and minimize the game, go back in, and everything is fine. I have to do this whenever I go to the menu screen or to see objectives - a minor hassle, but at least the game runs.
