1. So Im playing a 5000 assault against my room mate, me on defence. Im sure even a noob like him will smash me with 8600 points of tanks and arty, but hey, if it get's him into the game, fine. After about 10 turns, he says "This is stupid! I can't use my panther in the front to call indirect fire in from my Sturmtiger at the back of the map. I should just be4 able to lob shells over that hill and hit you." The only good responce that I could give him was "Well, if BTS didnt model it, it probably wasnt possible". But he is adamant that he should be able to do it. Now, Ive never heard of anyone using even SP guns for indirect fire from a mere 1800m away, but Im not really a grog, so I told him Id ask on here.... So, someone who knows what you're talkin about, I ask : Is it plausable to use SP guns or even tank guns to fire indirectly on something within the scope of a medium sized 5000 assault map?
2. Amen to that. Although, on top of the Vets dying out, I think that my generation, and the one after me are being influenced by the fact that schools dont really give a good world-view of the war, for one, and for two : Hollywood. Damn. I actually know people who have argued with me about the historical acuracy of the movie Pearl Harbor. Their reasoning : Pearl harbor really happened, this movie is called pearl harbor, so everything in the movie must be the way it happened. Bah.
3. Why not just look at the map in the scenario editor?
4. It's my opinion that some things will run faster with DX9 over 8. I have seen obvious improvements in No One Lives Forever 2, IL2 Sturmovik, and Battlefield 1942. I saw no real difference in M$ Combat Flight Sim 3 (but that game sucks anyways), and no difference in CMBO or CMBB, but neither of those are likely to be stretching a GF4 much anyways. It does NOT, unfortunately, do anything for the damn invisible text bug. Oh well... I dont suppose it should, but I was hoping somehow...
5. Yeah... me too... all I had to do was run my infantry up the left side and go in through the flank of the trees. I havnt tried it as germans yet tho...
6. I totally kicked butt 3 days after I got it. Then I practiced up real good untill I thought I was invincible. Then I got into a PBEM game and learned the meaning of humility. I have yet to get to a point against real people where I feel like Im better than just OK.
7. I ordered the game without playing the demo because it won an awward somewhere... loaded it up, played a QB, and after it was over (and I lost by a landslide) I thought... "eh... its ok. Nothing special." 20 hours and 15 straight QBs later I thought, "Eh... its ok." and passed out.
8. Actually, given the somewhat large scale of this game, if one carrier attacked another, Id assume that it was a duel between the carriers that lasted a couple of days, and involved the ships sending out bombing parties looking for each other as well as CAP on both sides... so I think that carriers should be able to sink each other, but that cruisers and BBs should only be able to counter attack a carrier if adjacent... after all, that WAS the big advantage of the carrier.
9. I noticed this statement in the FAQ on the official website : I wonder just how it is that strageic bombers can be used to attack air units... unless maybe it represents them bombing airfields?
10. Im sure its not a perfect simulation of what would have happened in real life (after all, the infantry dont leave little puddles behind in the game, I bet they did IRL), but I bets its a pretty close approximation. It IS an abstraction. Open terrain tiles arent REALY open. There would be little dips and random stumps and fences and stuff Im sure, and the squads areing runnning in a big line holding hands either. Im sure they're quite spread out to minimize the danger of shrapnel and such.
11. Holly crap! I go off for a couple of days and when I return I find a zillion freaking posts to dig through to find Sock Whatsit's pathetic attempt to cast aspersions on my courage! If you people put half the effort into solving world hunger that you did in this cancerous growth of a thread on the CM forums, I'd be a lot fatter.
12. Hey... arent you the poor schmoe who just parked a platoon of clueless cannon fodder on top of the hill, subsequently to be wiped out by a single round of 150mm death and damnation from my hummel? Dropped out of grad school, indeed. Im still here by the way wanker.
13. Also set things up so that the only angle you can be attacked from is within your (limited) arc of fire. Keyholing your tank between some heavy woods or a couple buildings. It helps a lot to keep those side shots from killin ya.
14. It's SSN (Scum Sucking Newbie). That'd be your title, bucko! I am a Squarehead! No no no, scratch that. I am a... umm.. err.. JUST LOOK AT MY PROFILE, YOU NINNY!!! Now, about that game. I've played you once already. Have you forgotten? It was last July. If you'll be so kind as to post the result here, I'll gladly send you a setup. HOP TO IT!!!
15. Refer to photo, previous page. Mace (that'll scare him off)
16. Shall I smudge my sword by mauling this minnow? Nah... a swift kick is easier. Lookie hare, sunnie. This ain't the wannabe challenge thread, this is the Peng Challenge Thread. Weez gots rulz 'n staindards 'n stoff. There's nobady hare ta uncwumple the olde red rug fer ya: Yooz gotsta figger it out yerself!
17. Right. So the normal thread full of geeks insulting each other where I normally find opponents has died an ignominious death so we can all thrash about aimlessly in some onion related campaign game.... So Im reduced to looking for a game here. My problem is that there is no obvious way to tell who to challenge without simple saying "some one play me... waah." So tell me, which one of you incoherent, feckless poop-mongering cheez-buckets is a Scum Sucking Squire, or a Stoopid Newbie, or what the hell ever rank Im entittled to challenge? Whichever one of you qualifies, I hereby challenge you to a game of CM.
18. wow. Its been such a long time since Ive seen one of these posts... About number 8 : Its been my experience that the tacAI almost always pickes better targets than I would myself, with the exception of AT crews (who have a tendency to fire when they have crap chance to hit). In recent months Ive taken to never giving my men fire orders at all, not even tanks usually. I just let them pick a target, and go at it. I always to better that way then when I try to micro-manage their actions.
19. 1: Select the unit you want to judge LOS, lock the camera to him, and ho to level 1. You will see exactly what he will be able to see, and it will be a helluva lot more imersive than some gimpy elevation markers fudging up the beutiful vista. 2: I gotta agree with you. More than 2 players would be really cool, but I dont think it would work very well for PBEM.
20. Yeah well, the Blue side is civilized anyways. The Reds are a bunch of weak-kneed, yeller-bellied, gamey faschists. Or fashists. Or both. Is this thread going to end up in the general forum?
21. What Id like to see from CMII : Its residence on my hard drive.
22.
quote:
Originally posted by BFawlty: All this talk about other areas CM could cover reminds me of the Pacific theatre discussion. I know that is not one that is being looked at, but I was wondering if anybody out there is working on a conversion for the Pacific, ala the Desert one?

I think the problem with that is that no Japanese equipment can be moddled, so it would be the pacific theatre with the Japanese using Panzers and MP40's...
23.
quote:
Originally posted by Specterx: Finally I can't understand why so many people are spending so much time on such a trivial issue. How many people would actually USE flamethrowers if they got a 10 point cost reduction?

I havent even remotely been following this debate, but I gotta say, *I* would use them. Ocasionally, I do use them if I think the situation will warant it. Especially on defence. Even on offence Ive used them to good efect a couple of times by zooming them all over the place in HT's.
24. Its not from WW2, but I thought this plane needed honorable mention. I especially liked the test pilots comments : "You look at the plane and say, 'Wow, that doesn't look very aerodynamic,' " said Air Force test pilot Ken Dyson. "Then you look at the aerodynamics of it and you say, 'Wow, that doesn't look very aerodynamic.' " Dyson added that Tacit Blue lived up to its other nickname, HUM, for Highly Unstable Mother. "I can't believe how many times I crashed it in the simulator," he said. And just to pretend like Im keeping things on topic, the Bison and the Kiwimobile are pretty ugly, but I have always thought that the rusian's multi-turret abortions were the worst... like a man with 3 arms or something.
