  1. A Puma is, indeed, not cheap; it is your responsibility to guard your flanks (even a zook/shrek will do); and would you feel any better if he had reconned down the centre of the map? Recon is recon. It's not led that well in the game in that recon vehicles are easy to spot and kill, so most of us use them any way we can. I do agree that using vehicles that don't carry weapons as recon is a cheap tactic, and I never do it; however, probing for soft spots and locating axis of attack is what recon is supposed to do, while taking maximum advantage of cover. Take a look at LAH's % y Hedgerows" at the Scenario Depot and see how he made the map diagonal to create a different way of handling flank charges. Good luck, and watch those flanks!
  2. And if anyone could tell me which files contain the idling tank sounds, I'd love to wipe that one out! Listening to that engine while I'm trying to give my orders sure is unsettling. I usually have to turn the sound down on my speakers and then turn it back up when the movie starts.
  3. Ya know I've noticed this exact same tendency when I'm playing against humans too! It just seems that their stuff blows up mine far more than mine blows up theirs. They get lucky shots on me all the time, and my guys can't seem to hit the proverbial barn door! Whaaaaaaaaaaaa. Actually, I've often been relieved to get some lucky shots that helped in the clutch. What a relief, and how 'normal' it feels when things go right. Guess that 'abnormal' feeling when things go dreadfully wrong is the same sinking feeling you get in real combat life. That sense that, "This is all wrong. This shouldn't be happening to me/us." Just my thoughts. Nice topic choice.
  4. Cheers! Thanks for the site. Lots of awesome mods. I'll download the software recommended and see how it goes!

  6. Sorry guys, but a search didn't help me. Does anyone know how to convert sound files from MP3 (which I don't even use, but have in my computer) to .wav files that the game can use? I downloaded the German voices from Tom's site, but they are all MP3 (Yepp) files, which I don't think the game will recognize. Haven't tried putting the MP3's into the .wav directory cuz I don't want to endanger anything. Before loading my MP3 thingy onto my computer, I was able to simply put the .wav files right into the game. BTW, the coolest mod .wav file is the Bagpipe music for the Brit "Advance" order! Thanks in advance.

  8. Hello, I've heard there is a group of Washington DC area CMer's. If you are one, or know the email address of someone, would you please mind letting me know? Thanks!
  9. Don't know about wattages, but assume the computer can handle things, as it was built by a gamer who knew I was playing CM. I know there are two fans. I'll have to track the error messages, if the continue. I did as you suggested at the start screen and hit shift and went straight into the game screen. Hopefully that solves that problem. I'll watch for the other problems and, if I may, try to tell you what's happening. Thank you for the free advice. Are you in Rugged Defense? I'm Sarentmajor there and would be happy to take you on if you'd like.
  10. Righto. Windows 98. Nvidia GForce 2 MX video card. Athalon 950 PC. Clicked on Properties on Qucik Time and it doesn't give me a version numbr that I can see. It must betheone that came with Windows98. Got plenty of RAM and Gig space as this is a fairly new computer designed just for CM. I have only a few other games and apps on this machine. I have noticed recently, however, that I'm getting more and more error messages that tell me I've performed an illegal operation and the system may close. Or I get the blue screen about control+alt+delete, and doing that gets nowhere, so I cold boot. This may all be traced to something wrong with my computer (which would be very frutrating). Thanks again, Kiltie [ 11-28-2001: Message edited by: Kiltie Lad ] [ 11-28-2001: Message edited by: Kiltie Lad ]</p>
  11. Thanks,Panzer Leader, for you great effort! I'm glad you have such a good relationship with Madd Matt. Your questions were great, covering just about every aspect of the game I had hoped would be covered at some point. Man, I can't wait til that big bugger comes out! Wait, that sounded kinda gross. Kiltie (Sarentmajor on Rugged Defense-come out and fight!)
  12. Hi Guys! Having a problem in that if I don't watch the entire begining movie as the game launches, and hit the escape key to skip it, the entire main screen comes on as only black. The words "Main Screen" appear at the bottom, but the dialog boxes are cloaked in black. Otherwise, game plays beautifully, well, except it also popped off in the middle of taking a pbem turn. Modwise, I've done many of the CMHQ downloads. I've downloaded skies and stuff from Tom's and Deanco and Der Kessel. I don't mind watching the opening movie, just wondring if I might have done something or if there is an easy fix. Thanks well in advance! 13. I'm a medium level opponent and game for this tourney! I just enjoy playing win or lose; although, I much prefer the latter! Never have played a PBEM, usually TCP with my bestest buddy, but I'm always interested in meeting new players. My email address is: Seamus660@AOL.com for anyone interested in TCP most evenings EST, or PBEM. I think a tourney would be fun. I played in only one East Front tourney and got creamed in the the first game- so much for that!
  14. Thanks for the assistance. Great interface that gunmetal, too bad I messed it up by adding the Hollywood faces. I will go back to the game files tonite to make sure I've checked all the BMP files.
  15. I don't think your bog chance increases with traffic. You do know about a quick reverse and forward to try to get out of the bog, I guess. There is nothing worse than bogging when your AFV has no line of sight to the enemy. Unfortunately, I just lost a game where my opponent bogged a Sherman on the forward slope of a snowy hill with full view of my lines. He just sat there and lobbed shells at me the whole game! Good Luck!
  16. HAPPY BD Matt! I've got some Puerto Rican Girls that're just dyin to meetchoo. Of course, they are here in Washington, DC and, if you can't get here by, say, 9pm, well, I'm just going to have to take care of em meself. Sorry, dude.
  17. Has anyone heard of any mods or BTS that allow for marching and period music ala Talonsoft's West Front? Eventhough the tunes got kind of repetative, it could still add to the gaming experience watching your truppen go into action with marshal music accompanying.
  18. Guys, I'm at work and don't have the Tom's Link from which I've downloaded the movie faces mod and was wondering if anyone has downloaded them and had the problem of the Tom Hanks face and Ted Sizemore face showing up on the game interface and covering the Command Bonus section of leaders. I've checked each of the BMP files and deleted the Hanks ones I found (couldn't even see any of Ted Sizemore), but the problem persists. It's a bit annoying; one of my buddies has the same problem. Thanks in advance!
  19. Anyone have problems with the movie faces downloaded from Tom's site? For some reason I get Tom Hanks (which I found and deleted from the BMP files) and Ted Sizemore (which I can't find in the BMP files) obliterating the command bonus area of the interface. Even after deleting two Tom Hanks faces they still obliterate that portion of the interface (I use the gunmetal interface). Thanks in advance for helping me to correct this very annoying problem.
  20. One of the key aspects of fighting any QB or Scenario is understanding that a "game" of however ong duration has a Begining, Middle and End phase. This is important in realizing what your opponent is up to and how to allocate your resources. It's always best to get an arty spotter or HQ safely ensconced in an elevated position from which he can observe the avenues of approach of the enemy, or most likely places for defensive positions. Recon is key. Seeking the enemy's shwerpunkt is vital in shifting defensive resources to the right areas instead of trying to cover the entire map. Your observer can also direct long range fire on the enemy and disrupt his advance or soften him up for your blow. When advancing use split squads (crack and elite best) with a long command HQ to figure out where he is. Plan on one third of the game as "Approach" one third as "Main Fight" and then the last third as "the End Game" which will find you hanging onto the objectives, or trying to wrest them away. Timining is, indeed, everything. Knowing where you enemy is and anticipating how he will be spending his time in each phase of the game, will give you some means by which you can anticipate him and seize the initiative without having to rush headlong at him. Cheers!
  21. Split squads are great for recon work when you are advancing. But as soon as they bump (and you should be sneaking with them so they don't start the firefight)get them the hell out of there. Their effectiveness is only in being eyes for the troops that follow; they are good for little else. Try to use squads whose leader has the "Star" command radius bonus so that he can be well behind them with the other two support squads and can get the platoon wheeled into action quickly. On defence, each split will dig a foxhole, so spread your splits into two belts and as soon as your forward split smells trouble use the "Withdraw" command to immediately get them back to the mainline, or if the enemy is weak and you'd prefer to defend forward, rush up the other half and combine in the frontline foxholes. Good Luck!
  22. I've seen posts about HQ's with +2 bonuses, but I can't see, or haven't run into any leader who has a Plus sign over any of their enhancement features. Am I missing something? Or are we simply talking about HQs that have more than one enhancement feature and that means a +2 HQ?
  23. Check to insure that the crew is still crewing the mortar. I had a crew just walk away from their weapon, and their pistols were obviously out of range when I'd put the target cursor out there. I don't remember seeing the mortar come under fire which could cause the crew to get the "H" out of dodge, but it must have happened.
  24. If you are advancing, run toward closest cover. If sitting tight, thank your lucky stars you remembered not to bunch up. I try to target my arty at choke points or right after I've pinned a few squads with some mg or long range rifle fire. Good luck!
