Yes - the Russian M1936 field gun was captured in huge numbers by the Germans in 1941 & 42. It was a very long piece - 51 calibres, and they were rebored to take PAK 40 ammo. These guns were also mounted on early Marders in some numbers. The Russians themselves stopped producing it as the long barrel was expensive to make. Instead they went to cheaper 40 calibre models such as the ZIS-2 and M1943 field guns.

Probably because there just isn't that much HE in a 50mm APHE shell! A tank is still a big machine - you can hit all sorts of non-vital things inside it without killing it - the idea that every penetration must kill is nonsense. Also early HEAT rounds were apparently not particularly lethal for their size by modern standards - they were usually not designed optimally by later standards (according to a WW2 rules author friend of mine - I know - there's better references out there but....) and often did no more than bore a small hole in hte armour - again there's nothign that says they MUST hit something vital once they've done that.

Sometiems shots that penetrate the armour simply do not hit anything vital - especially small shot without much (or lacking entirely) HE filler - they do not displace much armour, nor do they disintigrate into a lot of fragments. I note that the problem was with 50mm L42 guns - the Demo scenaroi has P-3's with 50mm L60 guns - they're a bit different in the range they can penetrate! However once penetration is achieved it doesn't really matter much whether it was at 3 metres or 300 metres for the effects on the target vehicle unless it's a case of gross overpenetration as some ppl have been talking about - everything ends up inside.

I'm playing the Halafaya Passs scenario - lots of Matildas and nothing at all to use their AP on - but they still manage - every damned time!!

OK - so early war 2 pdrs don't have HE, 'cos the British doctrine is that the tanks' machine guns are the anti-infantry weapon. Fair enough - stoopid, but such is life in hte Brit army. Can we then move a step further and have the tanks actually shoot their MG's at infantry instead of 2 pdr AP when they auto target??!! :mad: :mad: :mad: Sure at hte end of the turn I can manually retarget every tank and have it not use it's main armament, but it's really a bit of a bother and I'm missing out on all those valuable seconds of machine gun fire!! I mean it only seems fair!!
