1. I agree with Jeff. In one of the three tests I did last night on a 40x40 island. One lone regular SPW 251/1 killed/captured an entire regular American rifle platoon. That's 40 men, with combat experience, carrying Garands, BARs, grenades, etc. And yes, I did order the squads and the HQ units to close with and target the HT. This doesn't seem within the realm of reality to me. -Doug ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
2. Spook, A .50 cal should make swiss cheese of an HT from 40 meters away. I'll have to do some tests.... ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
3. I manually unzip and install each mod in the bmp (or wav) directory myself. No mod manager for me. I don't like the batch file idea, so for Bergman's mods, I simply deleted all the British, Free French, and Polish bmps and only install the American bmps (after renaming them to the proper file name). Well, I installed the British markings on the vehicles that the Americans don't use. It's a compromise, but I don't have to fool with batch files. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
4. Ok, I just did three quick tests, similar to KwazyDog's, only I increased the island to 40x40. I used a Regular SPW 251/1 vs one Regular American rifle platoon, with no special weapons. The tests start with the rifle platoon surrounding the HT. At the end of each turn, I order the individual squads and the HQ unit to move towards and target the HT. 1st test: HT lasts 1 minute, 50 seconds and causes 15 casualties before being knocked out. 2nd test: HT wins the battle. It kills/captures the entire rifle platoon in 3 minutes 45 seconds. 3rd test: HT lasts three minutes, 9 seconds and causes 18 casualties before being knocked out. Keep in mind this was conducted on a 40x40 island with no way for the HT to escape, a very disadvantageous position for a HT to be in when 40 men with rifles and grenades are trying to kill you. Draw your own conclusions. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
5. Ok, guys. Let's make this crystal clear. No one is saying HTs are immune to panzerfausts, panserschreks (sp?), rifle grenades, gammon bombs, demolition charges, bazookas, AT guns, .50 calibur MGs, or tank rounds. What is being said is they seem to be too tough to take out with infantry close assaults. All tests should be conducted with this in mind. The tests I have conducted, similar to the tests that KwazyDog did, seem to show that HTs last a little too long under an infantry close assault. KwazyDog, increase the island to 40x40. Conduct the test again using HTs, and then again using tanks. See if the HTs don't last as long as, or longer than, the tanks. -Doug ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
6. Pritzl, I completely understand you. I'm not going to stop playing, however. I'm just probably going to avoid scenarios that involve HTs until this situation is resolved. I just lost two HTs in one turn in a PBEM game to AT gun fire, so they are not invulnerable, just highly resistant to infantry close assaults. Guys, Pritzl is not being unreasonable. He asked a legitimate question. Knowing BTS, I'm sure they are working to resolve the problem post haste. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
7. Not just U.S. HTs, Tom, the German HTs are also very difficult to take out with an infantry close assault. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
8. It was my mortar team, and considering that, on the next turn, the shrek team opened fire on my Sherman that was zooming by, I wish the mortar team had smacked them with the mortar tube or something. Robert is in the process of teaching me the proper use of offboard artillery. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
9. I've been discussing this issue for a couple of days now on alt.games.combat-mission. I did two hours worth of testing last night. After making a map with a small circle of woods (about 40 meters square), I put different German AFVs (one at a time) inside this circle along with an American vetran rifle platoon with no rifle grenades or demolition charges. The AFVs I used were a half-track, a PZIVg, a Panther, and a King Tiger. I ran the test several times with each vehicle. The infantry was able (as it should be) to destroy each of the AFVs within three turns (180 seconds). Most AFVs were knocked out in the first turn....except for the King Tiger and, you guessed it, the half-track. It seemed to my inexperienced eye that the infantry vs tank modeling was realistic. However, the half-tracks seemed way too hard to destroy. One shrugged off at least twenty grenades before finally succumbing. After that I did some more tests, but this time gave the infantry some rifle grenades. Results: no contest. AFV dies in the first few seconds every time. My unscientific, inexperienced conclusion(s): (1) Infantry vs tanks seems to be OK. (2) Half-tracks seem to be way too tough to take out with plain infantry. (3) Rifle grenades (and fausts, I assume) seem to work fine. -Doug ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
10. I have many scenarios from some board game that will not be mentioned. If anyone wished to convert a scenario from this unmentioned board game to CM, and, say, their copy of that scenario has become so damaged as to be unreadable (spilled coffee, etc.), just send me an e-mail and I can scan it and e-mail it to them. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
11. This news is a real shame. I thought the site was, if anything, beneficial to ASL. I certainly hope someone else picks up the torch on this. Here's to playing a CM version of "The Guards Counterattack" someday. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
12. Apache, I am using a Voodoo 3 3000 card and haven't had a single problem with CM. The game has not locked up one single time on my machine. The driver I am using was downloaded about six months ago directly from 3dFX's web site. Hope this eases your mind. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing

14.
quote:
I really like your sub-text. Being a PhD I totally agree - have you ever heard about Navier-Stokes Eqs?

I think they are some sort of incomprehensible (to me) 3D modeling equations. Math is my weak point. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
15. Hello, guys. I thought I would come out of lurk mode and congratulate BTS on Combat Mission. I received my copy a few days ago and it has taken up a considerable chunk of my free time ever since. Never before have a seen such a detailed tactical combat simulation with such fantastic graphics. Not only that, but it is a blast to play. I haven't had this much fun with a wargame since the early '80s when I used to play Squad Leader. Oh, yeah, and this forum....It is almost as much fun to read as CM is to play. Anyway, I'm through gushing now. Thanks again, BTS. You can count on my business as long as you keep putting out such excellent work. ------------------ expert \'ek-,spert'\ n : someone who knows more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing
