It looks really cool and as I have some time on my hands tonight, I'm tempted to play the Brits against the AI while waiting for my opponent to send me his moves. Would that be seen as totally unfair and gamey? Or a legitimate thing to do? I'm not trying to gain an edge over my opponent. Comments please.

I feel that this would be totaly gamey. You would now know what forces he has and, whiether you try to or not, it will effect your current game with him. There are 100's of other battles out there to do while you wait. You can even start up another rune one if you want to. Or, go to the cm chat room and find someone to play a tcpip game. Have fun, rvalle

 3. I wonder how many mines are in a cm mine field. How many cm fields could be layed in an hour?
 4. "Typical average rates of uninterrupted operations - includes recording and marking. By hand, buried -Engineer Troop or 40 x infantrymen can lay: 125 x AT mines per hour in daylight. 75 x AT mines per hour by night. 75 X AT mines plus 225 x anti-personnel mines per hour in daylight. 45 x AT mines plus 135 x anti-personnel mines per hour by night. 600 x anti-personnel mines per hour in daylight. 360 x anti-personnel mines per hour by night. By hand, unburied - Engineer Troop or 40 x infantrymen can lay three times as many unburied mines as buried mines in the same time." First Clash Combat close-up in World War Three by Kenneth Macksey Wow.. that is a lot of anti-personnel mines. [ 07-18-2001: Message edited by: rvalle ]

Maybe someone here has another email address for him though. Anyone? rv
 6. I was having a bit of a burn out for a couple of weeks. Then my cmbo partner and I desided to play on a new map type. Open, no trees, large hills, armor battles. Oh my god... there is no cover but the hills themselves. My jaw dropped the first time I saw the map. Tanks popping up to take shots at each other. Great fun! Does anyone else have a favorite map type? rv
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by karch: I have a 7 month old and my CM playing has gone from juggling about 4-8 PBMs and the odd IP game, to .... Zero games. I'm trying to finish a few games that got dropped right after he was born, but those little munchkins take so much time. I can't believe it. Scott

Ha! Try 3! A 5 year old, a 2 and a 1. Talk aobut no time! I do a pbem turn here and their during the day ( I work nights). But my 1 year old sees me on the pc and now he wants to try. Every chance he gets he climbs the chair and hammers the keyboard and moves the mouse. When I see him and hurry over he hammers faster and points the the screen. rv [ 07-17-2001: Message edited by: rvalle ]
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Louie the Toad: Dear Rocket, A number of players are using Franko's Iron Man Rules. They eliminate the eye of god feature for those who think that capability is cheating. It also enhances the Fog of War by allowing play only from ground levels 1 and 2 plus only allowing viewing from the position of your own forces. There are a number of other rules and exceptions. Honorable Toad

Where can I find Franco's rules? They sound interesting. rv

I wonder if his evil will rub off? Come to think if it... my kids do act up a lot. It could be his influence (it can't be my parenting, which is perfect).
 10. Naperville (Chicago), IL. USA Someone mentioned Belgium. I lived at SHAPE Belgium for 5 years. When I told people where we were going I got "Belgium? Where is that?" rv
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by Hellzapoppin: ordered my copy of CM last Tuesday......was wondering how long I should wait to expect it at my door. . . I live in PA if anyone could give me a guestimate. Also, how does the multiplayer work? Thanks in advance.

The multiplayer works well. You can play via tcp/ip or email. During tcp both players enter orders at the same time. When you have both hit 'Go' the system generates the 'movie' and then you both can watch it. Repeat till one side waves the white flag. Via email takes longer. You plot your orders and sent the file to your opponent. That person plots his orders and then his system makes the movie but he can not watch it... all he can do is send it on to you. You watch the movie and send it back. He watched it and then plots his orders. Sends file to you and you plot. You make movie and send it. He watches and sends it back. You watch and plot. Repeat. rv
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Franko: Okay, I just have a couple of questions for you hardcores out there... 2. I read a historical source somewhere that stated that those 20mm guns were VERY frequent tank killers on the Eastern Front..simply because they drove Russian tank crews MAD because of the enormous banging that would result from multiple hits on a steel tank. Any truth to this? Have any historical sources? Thanks! You geeks..I love ya. Frank

A friend and I were talking about this. He said he read an account where some Germans found themselves in front of a Russian Tank attack with no AT guns. All they had were AA guns so they opened up... all guns firing on one tank. To their amazment the tank stopped and the crew bailed, getting cut down buy the AA shells. They shifted their fire and the same happened to the other tanks. They found a crew man alive and asked him why they bailed. He claimed that the noise was so bad that it drove them crazy. They knew they would be killed if the left the tank but HAD to get away from the noise. One crew member shot himself inside the tank. Some of them had blood coming from their ears. I'll have to ask him where he read this at. rv
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by JAK: Hi Guys, This looks like alot of fun, can I get in on it? How exactly do you do it? Jake

We sent our orders to Gordon who would plot them and then run the turn. He would email the movie to all of us. Between turns we could send emails to the others in our team and then send in the orders again. BTW, hats off to Gordon. He made every turn on time. Not only that but every order I sent him was plotted perfectly. Considering my writing skills that is a feat! rvalle
 14. To me, the most amazing thing about this game was the shear chaos. No one knew what the other guy was doing. You germans did not see it but on the first turn we had two collisions. One of them caused a tank to get stuck and the next one unstuck him. I never thought about how much differance it makes to only control one tank. When you 'drive' all the units they all move in perfect harmony with each other. Pausing when they need to and moving fast to cover a gap. This way we were given some instructions "Move to the crossroads" and we hoped that everyone would do what they needed to. It was GREAT fun and I'd do it again. Gordon, can you email me if you start up another battle? I don't get to check the board all that often. rvalle
 15. How often are you planing on doing turns? My dang dsl line is down at home so I am email less (I'm sure you can feel my pain). But I could sneak in a turn or two during work which is at night here in the US.
 16. I have to work on the aar a bit. All the screen shots are .bmp's I think so the blooming file is 6 megs. Hmmm I'll need some instructions on how to post it too. And, make sure Fionn does not mind. Oh... and I blame OSFG. It was his battle plan. I just executed. And Fionn executed me. [This message has been edited by rvalle (edited 02-08-2001).]
 17. After a long and hard fight Fionn was able to snatch victory away from me. So close! Nice fight Fionn. (Translation: The battle lasted 3 turns. He crushed me. I curse you Fionn, curse you , curse you!)
 18. My game against Fionn has finally started. Wish me luck. BTW, Fionn promises be that it will be a short game. Gotta love that guy… rv
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Terence: So rvalle, how did it go between you and Fionn Kelly?

We havn't started yet. I think Fionn is trying to give me time to practice.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Mark IV: A Public Service of the Peng Thread. Remember, the only stupid question is the one you post where everyone can see it. Wanna know how to take a screen shot? How to string all the turns into one long movie? Why they don't show all 12 men in a squad?

Screen shot, yes. One long movie, YES! 12 men, no. rv
 21.
quote:
Originally posted by Berlichtingen: If you expect to lose, you can try your damndest, but you will still lose. Fionn's biggest weakness is his own over confidence. Don't let him spook you (he will try... it usually starts with him sending you an e-mail telling you with some accuracy what you have), keep your head when he counter attacks and wait for him to make a mistake.... and yes, he makes mistakes

___________________ Ok... let me try this again. I think I can.. I think I can... I know I can beat Fionn! He is toast! I'll crush him under the tracks of my Tiger tanks! I'll blast him with my artillery and stomp on him with my boots! Better? rv
 22. And most importantly of all, don't believe you're going to lose, or you will. You have every chance of winning. Have confidence in what you're doing. Don't make assumptions about your opponent – especially the assumption that he's in control. A good commander won't reveal that things are going badly until all is lost, so don't lose heart. Just do your best with what you've got, and persevere until the end. ____________________________ I have a mixed view on this. I expect to lose BUT I'm going to do my damndest to win! If I lose... what the heck he is very good. If I win... if I win then I'll quit playing as it could only go downhill from there! Plus, I figure I'll learn more from losing to Fionn then from playing me friend to a draw every time. After playing Fionn I'll go back and CRUSH my friend! rv P.s. I told my friend I had challenged Fionn Kelly. His response? 'You challenged Fionn! He's famous!' [This message has been edited by rvalle (edited 01-06-2001).]
 23. So, which of you is playing the Germans? _______________________ Well crap. That's what I get for being lazy and trying to copy and paste the email. I'm the Germans, he is the Americans. I'll be attacking he will be... counter attacking! rv
 24. So, I played the demo a couple of times with a friend, both battles ending in a draw, and buy the full version of the game. What is the first thing you do? Challenge Fionn Kelly to a battle of course! I have read a couple of his aar's and I have gleaned some information: 1: He is really good! 2: I'm going to get crushed What the heck... how else can you find out how good you are right? He suggested that I talk to you guys as he has played (and beaten he says) most of you here. He also says that you guys are 'the only guys on that forum worth a damn'. I have the tiger by the tale... how do I survive? Heck, how do I do good enough to make Fionn respect me in the morning? Its going to be: a village, moderate woods, moderate hills, I'll be the Germans, he'll be the Americans. 3000 points for the defender, 4500 for the attacker. A 900msomething wide map, maybe 1.5 km deep. I think I'm attacking as he says that will give me enough troops to attack three times before I run out of troops. Any suggestions? One of the main things I'm worried about is that I have never played a battle where I have to buy my own troops. What should I buy? Fionn.. no peaking!
