  1. Fact: Battalion has two "T"s and one "L" Edited because I ain't so smart as I think I is [This message has been edited by Forever Babra (edited 03-07-2001).]
  2. It's fun when kitty 'splodes Mensch. ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus
  3. Extract from the yet-to-be published "Nachalo Voiny", the war memoirs of Lt. Evgenii Monyushko
  4. Here is an extract from the Loza interview at Russian Military Zone: Now the questions. In CMBO, I have noted that vehicles destroyed while on the move will most often veer to the side, but vehicles suffering an immobilizing hit simply stop on the same heading. Any hope of an adjustment for CM2? I would NEVER EVER (EVER) suggest that it be player-controlled, but could "called shots" be implemented by the tac a/i if they aren't already? In the example above, we see called shots at the tracks and the fuel cells. It stands to reason that if the only effective shot a unit has is at the tracks, it's going to take that shot, doesn't it?
  5. James Quinn posted this over on the History Channel WW2 forum and I thought I'd repeat it here, with CM2 no doubt being cranked out in Discograd. Dmitriy Loza, Hero of the Soviet Union, commanded Sherman tanks for the Red Army and is the author of a recent book on the subject. The Russian Military Zone recently secured an interview with him which may be found here: http://history.vif2.ru/atwar/loza/loza1.html It's a good read. ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus
  6. Obligatory grog post. Grapeshot is a naval weapon and is nothing like "Cannister" which was used by field artillery. Grapeshot has five or six quite large iron balls wired together. They are large and iron so they have a chance of penetrating oak. Cannister uses a larger number of lead shot, and is intended for soft squishy horsey-manny things. HE, meaning "High Explosive", shells were never used, there being no high explosive obviously. Exploding shells were used, but only by mortars and howitzers. Airbursts could be, and were, achieved by correctly cutting the fuze. The British had the unique ordnance of Shrapnel, a much more effective exploding shell, and Congreve rockets, which were wildly inaccurate but devastating to enemy morale. I think the whole exercise of trying to adapt CMBO to some other era, particularly one so removed, is a misplaced effort. In the same amount of time one could teach one's self the rudiments of programming.
  7. That's why I DON'T want it -- but it's still outstanding.

  12. No, Juno, you've got it backwards. They ARE (allegedly) a benefit against hollow charge rounds. I've been paying extra close attention recently so I can record instances where they don't seem to be working. Unfortunately, haven't had any side hits recently, and I'm much too lazy to set up a test.
  13. Well, that's what they told me back in the beta demo days. I've seen an alarming number of side penetrations from bazookas on skirted vehicles though, so I question whether or not they're acting as they should. ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus

  15. Latest Updates: Lawyer continues to throw away good hardware just for the hell of it, seemingly. In a 50m firefight one of his M3s halftracks sporting the feared Ma Deuce was turned into swiss cheese by a slovenly, frantically reversing SdKfz 251/1 and its piddly 7.92mm. HA!! Herr Oberst ran out of heroin I guess, because he actually sent me a turn this month. I'll post another update from him in June perhaps... ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus
  16. They will loose their payload and then strafe for a while. Sometimes they are so effective they take the fun out of a game. Other times, they'll waste their effort on dead or, horror of horrors, friendly vehicles, if they bother to show up at all. There's a trick to avoiding their effects, but I'm not sharing that ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus
  17. Fun, ain't it? ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus
  18. LOL. Reminds me of one of my recent opponents who thought it would be a good idea to target a German LMG team with an M7 Priest at a range of 10m. Blew himself sky-high, he did. It's worth losin' to see bonehead stuff like that I tell ya. ------------------ "The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors..."- Maximus

  20. I don't say what we did was the smart thing, just an "ambush choice". All in all, we pretty much sucked at the whole business anyway. To answer your question, Israel Defence Forces, 82-84, and I always sucked at sports ------------------ The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors... Maximus
  21. Well, there's a heck of a difference between Berlin 1990 and 1945 But since we're sharing anecdotes, I'll share one too: On the push to the Damascus-Beirut Highway in the month of Sivan (The Time of the Burning Sun), because of a number of logistical foul-ups one of the reserve units in American M60 Tanks ended up leading the advance. They were hit by Syrian commandoes (who were literally crawling on the tanks) and were forced to call down artillery on themselves in order to extricate. My infantry battalion was immediately sent out on the flanks to set up anti-tank ambushes for the inevitable counterattack which was expected during the night. There had been heavy aerial combat all the previous day (actually, the largest supersonic dogfight in history) and reports were good that we had acheived air supremacy, so we were on high alert for enemy night moves. Syrian 1st Armoured Division had also been positively identified in the area. During the night we ID'd Syrian infantry moving stealthily to the westward about 200 metres out. Behind them, not visible but distinctly audible we could hear the tanks we were expecting. We opened fire on the infantry and then got the hell out and didn't have a single regret about not engaging the tanks. ------------------ The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors... 22. A 40mm Bofors will level any building MUCH faster than an AVRE. So will a vanilla Sherman. The only place it shines is in bunker busting. 290mm (almost 12 inch) hollow charge will smoke any bunker, as it will any tank if it happens to hit. But try getting it in range... ------------------ The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors... Maximus
  23. I have my standard stress-relief, blow things up, scenario for moments of extreme boredom. A few dozen 14" spotters for the Brits, and a couple of battalions of German infantry with about a Panzer Division's worth of tank support, locked on a large island. Casualties are usually over 1,500 Germans after about three turns... ------------------ The common ordinary SS soldier was just following orders from their superiors... Maximus
