  2. I didn't find what I was looking for in this thread, but definitely figure it deserves a bump because it is pretty cool. And by cool, I mean totally sweet. Murph
  3. Aha...problem solved. In my laptop at work I had not upgraded yet to the V1.01 patch. Once I did this, the file now appears as it should in the in-game menu. For some reason the scenario is only seen if you have the patched version? Anyway, off to play the scenario! Murph
  4. Kingfish: Yes I am. What I insert into the folder is the unzipped *.cme file. It appears in the scenario folder just like all the others, except that it doesn't show up in the game menu. Does this happen to anyone else? If not, then I must be doing something wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure out what:( Murph
  5. I must be doing something stupid, but I just can't figure this one out... I download the scenario. I place the file (e.g. "The Tank.cme") into the scenarios folder. Then I go into the game, and the scenario is not among those in the scenario menu. This happens only occasionally, with only some scenarios (which means that I know how to download and install a scenario in general). Anyone else get the same thing? It it a glitch within the actual file that prevents it from being "seen" by the program? Thanks, Murph
  6. Count me in for a couple of pints. I'm in the Gramercy area, but anywhere in Manhattan would be great! Martin
  7. A word of thanks to Nippy, for the thread below: Nippy's Guide to fun and enjoyable quickbattles In it, he shares some of his tested parameters for quick BALANCED QBs against the AI. An absolutely marvelous idea! Before that, I was getting a little fed up of pounding the AI, and I didn't have enough knowledge to go about making a fairer match (to me, adding experience bonus or troops is the "easy" way out, but not what I was looking for). Thanks to Nippy's rules, I've played countless "prepackaged games", each different, but each with similiar premises. If you don't play well the AI will give you a very hard time. Moreover, through repetition you learn things which you wouldn't otherwise, like how to handle 50mm PzIII against pesky AT guns (the joys of 50mm mortars with HQ spotting!), how to set up a killer defensive perimeter in bad weather (heellooo mr. flamethrower!), etc. It has made a big difference in my QB playing, and I recommend you read the thread above! Now a plea to Nippy, or to you others out there. Following the example/format in his thread, can you share with us some new scenarios? I think I'm ready to graduate to other learning situations. This is like CM school, with little problems doled out a step at a time until you learn to manage them:) Cheers, Martin
  8. Well PGNx, I thought the interview was good, thank you for taking the time to do it and for letting us know about it. Folks, what's the deal with the snobbery? Not only do they do the interview, but PGNx then takes the time to register, post so we all know, etc., and all some of you can give him is BS criticism? I don't think it's the best interview ever either, but you know what, it really is way more interesting than no interview. Unlike some of you, I guess I don't value my time THAT much as to demand a refund for the 2 min. spent reading it, just because it wasn't up to par. Switching gears comment about one of Martin's replies: He mentions something about how it would be cool to see if this or that had happened. What if the Germans had held on at Kursk, and so on. In my opinion, the scale of the game does not really allow for this. You might take part in a piece of a piece of a piece of a huge engagement like that, but the rest you have to leave up to the imagination. I'm not sure that any of the playable battles in the game can give you that sense of "changing history". What do you guys think? (I don't play many/any large battles, so perhaps I'm wrong on this...) Murph
  9. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I must say, I read this board (and also the general forum) every day and enjoy it immensely, but my single favorite posts are AARs with pictures. It's the second best thing to playing the game. I sit back and savor them like a fine wine. Look forward to more treats down the road. Thanks! Murph
  10. Very interesting, thanks for taking the time to do it! It seems that we don't get as many AARs as we used to with CMBO, and I sure do miss it! (maybe I should do one-that's a thought). One question. I too noticed how you bunched up your tanks. Normally, I'm more of the "spread them out" type of commander. Not all over the map, though, I mean still in their platoon formation, just not so literally on top of each other. I wonder if you or others could comment on this--is it the best way to go? It seems to me that historically you would be a little more spread out, so as to present a less juicy target, while still trying to maintain position that would allow multiple tanks to mass their firepower if necessary. I remember once in CMBO against the AI, I was defending a village in the snow, the Germans came in with like 6 tanks all very bunched up, and I timed a 100mm+ artillery barrage on them. It was one of those moments you remember for ever! Murph
  11. Ahhh, well done my little grasshopper...You won't regret a single penny of your purchase. Do stop by in a few weeks and tell us what you think of the AI, will you? You have been assimilated. (in memory of CMBorg ) Murph
  12. . . . . . . . . . . . So after playing a couple of the smallish scenarios I'm getting used to getting a "minor tactical victory" at best, the AI is really giving me a hard time, specially if I'm on the attack. I played the above scenario last night and I killed the AI, I think it was a 92% major victory. The AI surrendered on turn 14 or so, and I had lost no vehicles at all. What is going on here? I know I'm not that good. Did I just get lucky? I took a lot of shots that were minor penetrations, but never lost a vehicle, and I massed fire with a wide assortment of light tanks and halftracks everytime the partisans showed their heads. Wiped out hte platoon on the left, wiped out the platoon on the right, and then destroyed whoever was still in the town, with my dismounted platoon sweeping the woods on the right. Now, I know they're partisans (albeit veteran), and I was playing full FOW, not extreme, and the computer had no bonus (none was suggested in the briefing). Why did I do so well? I'm curious because most scenarios are designed so that I have a hard time, yet this one went just great. Did I get lucky? Was there a scheduled air strike or something on his side that never materialized? I read above about AT guns, but the Russians didn't have any in the battle I fought...I was puzzled to roll over him like that, made me feel like I actually new how to play! That's when I know something is wrong and I need to post about it Murph
  13. This is great, thanks for taking the time to do it! The only thing that sucks is that now I read through the first 5 chapters and have to wait for the others to arrive. Seems like there's been a lot of "anxious waiting for things to arrive" on this board yet! (what the hell, in the meantime I'll play CMBB, which thankfully is in safely my hard drive) Murph
  14. Thanks Nippy, that was very informative (and funny!) Question: is this a result of the enemy spotter having seen your forces as you were nearing (in an abstracted manner)? can this be avoided by setting up where he doesn't have LOS? Or can you pretty much count on the "good" areas, like behind a ridge, etc. be hit, regardless of the LOS the enemy may have to it? Thanks, Murph
  15. That was fantastic, thank you very much for taking the time! Loved the pictures, loved the format. It really gave you a very clear mental map of the battle, that "as if you were really there" feeling. Please feel free to do more! Murph
  16. Amidst the generous sneak-peeks offered up to us in the previous weeks, there were numerous occasions when this or that beta tester gave us the old "I'd tell you about this but Madmatt would kill me" speech. Now that it's out, can some of you tell us what those "super-secrets" were? Were there specific features which you were warned not to tell anyone about? It would be interesting to see if these closely guarded features are the ones providing the greatest wow-factor now that the game is out (or conversely, if the "coolest" things are improvements that were public all along). Spill the beans, it's ok now Murph
  17. Thanks jtcm, these are great. Short and sweet. Remember, for every 1 person that posts here with words of gratitude/encouragement, there are probably 100 out there who really enjoy reading the AARs. Murph
  18. Great! Thank you very much guys. I tried copying it manually and it worked. Strangely enough though, a lot of the scenarios don't appear in the game even though they are in the right folder, and all my mods are gone, even though I had kept them in the bitmap folder. Oh well, I'll tweak to see if I can get back in full gear, but yesterday I was able to get back in the saddle and play a quick 500pt ME against the AI. Turns out that they are still as bad on the attack as they were a few months ago! Thanks again, Murph
  19. The situation is the following: I'm trying to reinstall the game, which has (gasp) been off my HD for 2 months. Since I last had the game I added a new HD (D Drive), which I now use to store games and other big files. First of all, I put the cdrom in, and it just spind around forever, nonstop. No screen pops up or anything like that. Figuring I'll do it manually, I go to my computer, select the F drive, which says "Combat missions" and open it up. I get all the standard choices, and I double click on the Setup icon. Install wizard pops up, I select an install onto the d drive, in the CMBO folder. I select full install and then hit go. It goes on for a few secs and then I get the following error window: Component transfer error Component: 1. Minimum Install to hard disk File group: bmps File: F:\Bmp\984.bmp Error: A device attached to the system is not functioning Once I hit "OK" (my only option), uninstall stops and I get booted back to the "combat missions" directory on the Cd. Please help, I have no clue what's up. My system specs are unchanges since last time I played the game (it's possible that I may have changed from Win 98 to Win Me, but I think that I had already played it under Me before I uninstalled). Thanks in advance, I have to start getting into the groove of things again in time for CMBB!! Cheers, Martin
  20. That's just a fantastic read. Thanks Pillar for taking the time to do it, and look forward to reading some more. I would say that this gets me in the CMBB mood even more so than the screenshots. Again, great job, and thanks! Murph
  21. Wow, pretty cool. But...I don't get it When the turret rotates, the numbers turn as well, so how does that provide a guide as to direction of fire for those in the tank? Moreover, for a commander looking at a group of tanks, wouldn't he just look for the turret to determine where the tank was pointed at? It seems that if the markings were on the hull, it would make more sense. I'm sure I'm being a dumb moron, but hey, it ain't making sense to me! Murph
  22. Ahhh, it makes me want to weep. I went to school at Carolina (class of '93), and just the thought of meeting up with some CM folk on Franklin st., maybe over a blue cup at He's Not...I just, sniff, get all sentimental, because I'm in NYC, oh so far away from Tar Heel land. Y'all have fun in your get together, I'll join you in spirit! Murph PS- Carolina ACC football champs? Could happen, but who woulda thunk it?
  23. Yeah, Atari kicked ass (specially the Activision games), but the real gaming breakthrough came with Colecovision! It kicked intellevision's ass! I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I was one of the 10 or so people that got a Colecovision ADAM computer. Now those were some controllers that took some getting used to. CM on Colecovision, followed by a little Buck Rogers or Donkey Kong... Damn time flies. Murph
  24. If it hasn't been posted to the depot yet, could you please send it to me? I'd love to give it a spin. martinmurphy1972@hotmail.com And by the way, I think it's spelled "vengeance", not vengence" Cheers, Murph
  25. Now that you have your answer, at the very least you should ease our curiosity and tell us how this equation applied to CM...
