The Jagdpanther carries the 88mm L71, WWII's finest tank killer.

LOL. Monty didn't "beat" anybody. Rommel lost in the desert due to lack of supplies and support, while Monty had the full backing of Churchill and their allies. If the two had met with anything like equal force, Rommel would have handed him his ass.

  3. Not exactly sure what your question is, but, typically, if you are the scenario defender, your troops will begin the battle in foxholes. Tanks can only be dug in if the scenario author specified that. You can choose to dig in your tanks, but they will not be able to move for the entire battle.

Sorry if I haven't answered your question.

  4. There are three types of infantry graphics. Full squads show 3 men, half squads and squads with some casualties show 2 men, and crews and decimated squads show as 1 man. The bar at the bottom of the screen will tell you how many of the vehicle's crewman survived and are represented by that 1 man.

And yes, that is to keep the cpu from doing unnecessary work to show things that don't add to the game.

  5. Its amazing what an explosive shell, like a 20mm or 37mm will do to the human body. In fact, the Geneva convention forbade using these automatic anti-aircraft guns on infantry, but, those kind of rules are, obviously, pretty hard to enforce. Like napalm now being internationally illegal. Its okay to shoot people, but not burn 'em. Anyway, Ostwinds and Wirbelwinds are real killers when there are no allied tanks to make their lives hard.

I once had a truck mounted 37mm deter and kill/wound most of two platoons of attacking Americans. I thought my defenders were history till that thing opened up.

  6. Probe forward aggressively. You should be in possession of the entire map by game end. You will come in contact with sizeable US forces near the far map edge as you advance, so keep within mutual support distance. This is gamey, but you can fire up all your FO's around turn 14 knowing that the AI will assault you. 4 FO's drop a ton of 81mm fire and will effectively defang any attack on your troops.

Someday, the issue of being broadly pushed back will be changed. Until then, take solace in the fact that your opponent was pushed back to make a "no man's land" just as you were. So, be the first one to fill the vacuum when the battle starts.

Care to make a wager on that, Vergeltungswaffe? Don't count the infantry out. I work at Cornered Rat Software (which has several CM players, btw). We certainly hope that it is hard for CM players not to like it. :)

I would be happy to make you a wager on it. I wish you all the best of luck and success, it would be wonderful if it worked, but I am confident that it doesn't have a prayer.

And to Rebel, I stand by my guesstimates. No way on God's green earth that half of the people you could get to play this game would play as infantry (read: targets).

As far as Desert Storm goes I think it would be fair to say the US was driving the Kingtiger (Abrams) this time, with the Iraqis trying to make do with the Sherman (T-72).

If the US had tried to go head to head with the Germans under similar conditions (open desert, complete air superiority for the opposition (imagine if Rudel had been able to bag 500+ Shermans instead of T-34's), the Sherman would have been as big as success as the Iraqui T-72 was.

Complete air superiority and the short engagement distances in northern Europe saved the Shermans ass.

It happened, without airpower playing a role. At the battle of Kasserine Pass, US tankers in Shermans got their asses handed to them by Germans in Mk III's and IV's.

The Sherman had truly wonderful tread life, its greatest advantage.

And to Snake Eyes, how far do you think an Abrams goes on a tank of gas. When your gasoline plants and supply vehicles aren't being bombed and interdicted back to the stone age, mileage isn't a huge concern. And when your advancing, vehicles that break down get repaired instead of abandoned.

Smeltz hit the nail on the head. It took them way too long to figure it out, but the USAAF finally realized that petrol was the highest priority target. I won't make the argument that airpower can win the war by itself, but airpower made the western front in WWII a cakewalk compared to what it could have been.

And finally, the T-72 is a piece of crap, built to use the smallest amount of resources and unable to be crewed by people of even average height.

    Ok, through ranting now.
