Hussar replied to IDF's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Mine took 16 days but that was well before Xmas (to Melbourne).. -
Yep Thanks guys, your right. I was just expecting the usual patch. When in doubt read the B***** manual.
-

88mm KwK 36 L/56 accuracy test and some ideas
Hussar replied to -Jochen-'s topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Steve etc I have been following all this with interest and the same criticisms crop up for CM that crop up for all first class sims. EAW is a classic example, their web site if full of people who reckon the Spitfire is over modelled, the P-51 is under modelled etc etc. As an EAW fanatic I agree with them but I am not flying with my life on the line. The Sherman was a sh***y tank but tactics were devised to overcome this and when your butt is on the line you behave much differently than in a sim, where you just shrug if you get hit, and move on. There is a great article on Sherman vs Panther tactics at the Armormag site (Back Issues July/Aug 96) and in a city (Vienna) too. Sure they were Russians, but the US/Brits used the same tactics. It all comes down to the men, and well led and experienced crews will win over green crews no matter what the equipment, (within reason). Not sure that this aspect can be modelled properly in any sim. -
About 16 days to Australia, if anyone wants to know from here..

Combat Sim cc5 review - CM mentioned
Hussar replied to KiwiJoe's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
HMMM ! I must admit that the review lost me a bit when it talked of the "RUGGED" Sherman. Overall I think the top down format of CC has had its day and I wont be buying this one. -

Thinking about buying Combat Mission
Hussar replied to Aussie_Shooter22's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Aussie-Shooter Buy as soon as you can, its been over two weeks since my visa was charged, and I'm still waiting. AND DYING OF FRUSTRATION !!! BTW the local mag CDPowerplay had the demo in it last month. -
Be wary of Mansteins "Lost Victories" guys. He was severely discredited in the 1950's, so much so that the 2nd edition of his book was edited to remove most of the untruths. The first edition is now a collectors item as a result and is worth big bikkies, I'm told.

Andrew I take your point but it did not work very well in Normandy and elsewhere did it ?. The only tanks that stood a chance were the Fireflies and there were not enough of them. I think National pride had a lot to do with it, and it cost how many lives ??

Hi CavScout, I didnt say the Brits would supply the 17 pdrs. I understand it was offered to the US for them to manufacture it, but they knocked it back. Bit of the usual "not designed here" b******t got in the way I suspect...
-
I think the 105 had far too slow a muzzle velocity to be used in the anti-armour role. I understand that the US was offered the British 17 pdr well before D-Day for manufacture for the US Sherman. Given that the Firefly was the only Allied tank to stand a chance against German MK V's etc whoever knocked back that offer (on "logistic" grounds, I understand) has a lot to answer for.

What is with threads getting locked?
Hussar replied to Jeff Heidman's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
To the Moderators Re the timed thread/lock question above. Please remember the worldwide timezone nature of this forum. Most threads are well advanced before we in our upside down part of the world get to read them, let alone join in. I was just about to post the other day when the thread got locked on me. Also I agree putting a point of view and then locking the thread is not a good move. I know that this is a private forum designed to boost CM, but we overseas types are customers too. Well I will be when I get delivery...Hint !. -
Very sorry to read this. We can only hope that things will improve for your father. Best Wishes..

US WW2 inferiority Complex 101...
Hussar replied to PzKpfw 1's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Part of the Allied so called inferiority complex I believe was caused by their inferior equipment (I'm referring to tanks here). It would be hard not to feel at a disadvantage when you know that you need 4 or 5 "Ronsons" to knock out one Tiger. How the Tankers kept their moral high under such odds I do not know. Imagine sitting in one of those things with a Tiger coming over the hill knowing that you had only a 50% chance of surviving. -
New Zealanders in WW2: maps/scenarios?
Hussar replied to PeterNZer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Keith, they were not ANZAC troops after Dec 41. The Australian divisions were withdrawn to slog their way through New Guinea etc. The NZ forces stayed in Europe to fight in Italy. -
Hi Guys I have been following this thread with interest, but it seems to have dried up so... I would be hesitant about a lot of the "new" revisionist stuff coming out now. The German OOB at Kursk, and elsewhere, has been known for years and several good books have been written about this battle, particularly in the "high interest" period of the '70s. Manstein in particular was heavily discredited in the 1950's, so much so that the first edition of his book was heavily altered by the time the second edition came out to cover some of his lies. The first edition is now a collectors item as a result. Whilst it is true that the Soviet records have opened up widely in the last few years, they have added little to what was known about Kursk, particularly from the German side.
