I probably shouldn't tell you, because you won't believe it, but she just got me a D-Day DVD and WWII in Color (not the History Channel one, the other one) DVD! Btw the WWII in Color DVD is absolutely excellent.

I once again submit the notion that a PBEM (and soon) TCP/IP board should be added to battlefront.com

  3. the phrase "too light to fight" comes to mind.

But rapid deployment is really important nowadays so I can see why they are developing these. My guess is heavy armor will go away unless we actually have a real war in the interim. I think a war would prove their value in spades, but I certainly dont want that proven that way smile.gif

Edit : This was in response to Compassion CNN article.

  4. When playing defense and letting my guns open up from long range I notice they select Arty Observers, Machine guns, mortars, etc BEFORE those troops are identified. It is an easy work around for FOW, imho. If some new target pops up (not identified) and my gunners switch to targeting it , I know that target is higher on the priority list for destruction. a good test is to have a bunch of troops break cover at the same time (long ways away) and then send an arty observer out (a little delayed), every gun firing on the other troops will retarget the arty observer even though it is farther away AND says "Infantry?" as its unit designation.

Has anyone else noticed this or is the crack finally getting to me?

After many years of gaming I can smell a POS from a mile away. If a game WONT give you a demo (B17 has no demo to try) AND goes back on its word about a major feature (multiplay) there is no way im risking any money on it.

No demo is actually more of a killer than no multiplay, No demo is a sure sign of a lemon.

  6. I usually forego them and get 20mm AA guns instead, takes out all vehicles from long range, very hard to detect (place it back in the trees a little), built in AA defense, great defense against the Greyhound and mortars. I use the 20mm to take out everything but armor (best you can hope for is immobilization unless they do something really stupid). I rarely grab RR's, they just arent worth it IMHO.

Thanks for the responses. I've heard that the Viewsonic 21" is a good monitor - anyone out there have it? I'm one of those strange people who doesn't like the horizontal wire lines in the Sony monitors, so even though I know they are excellent, I don't think it will be an option for me.

I have a Viewsonic 21" (Professional Series PF790), highly recommended, we have other monitors here and they dont have nearly the features and crispness that this one has..

  8. Interesting that most people say German has the most cost effective units (with the exception of the M8).

I do love the Volk SMG people as well for close range defensive engagements. As a matter of fact I usually go with a Stu III, Volks SMG, and 1 or 2 20mm in small QB's, that is ~225 pts of cost effective killing power.

  9. Interesting, I never really thought of it. But it turns out I use route based scouting on open terrain, in close terrain I use a broad front scouting. If the terrain is ambigious (meaning no route really looks better than another) I will tend to use broad based scouting as well.

As a matter of fact in a current game (1000pt attack QB - I'm americans attacking). I'm using 1 platoon for route based scouting and it has worked astoundingly well. With overwatch of 2 81mm FO's, 1 105mm VT, and 6 60mm mortars, as soon as I hit resistance the squad in contact withdraws and all mighty heaven pounds the opposition. For 6 casualties I have taken out 1 pak40, 1 37mm, 2 HT's, and have caused 2 MG-42's to withdraw. I think the argument here is really centering around a difference of opinion as to what recon is (i.e. scouting vs recon, I think these 2 are different)..

  10. The 3 books from Donald Burgett were fantastic, the most amazing first person accounts i've read yet.

(Seven Roads to Hell : A Screaming Eagle at Bastogne , The Road to Arnhem : A Screaming Eagle in Holland ,Currahee! : a Screaming Eagle at Normandy )

Band of brothers (stepehn ambrose) was great , it also covered the 101st Airborne which makes it interesting to hear accounts from the same actions that Burgett was in, but at seperate parts of the battle. Band of Brothers was good view from the leaders and the men. Pegasus Bridge from Ambrose was good as well.

Company Commander I read and it has a much different feel from the other books, It's from a regular infantry line commanders POV and it show quite a difference from the above books, still pretty good, though I would have hated to be in that guys company.

I am currently reading "Closing with the enemy" which is more about tactics used in WW2, it is good but it doesnt fall under your criteria.

Panzer Commander : Memoirs of Colonel Hans Von Luck I enjoyed.

I have read about 25 books over the last 2 months I'll go back through them and see if any others fit the bill. But the above are all good.

  11. Just for symmetry I'll post what I posted in the other thread;

"How about instead of one flag smack dab in the middle have 2 (or more depending on the map size, i play smaller battles) located on the flanks and NOT in the middle. It would add spice since you could try for one, or the other, or both, instead of just on sitting in the middle, just a thought."
