1. OOh! OOh! Me! Me, too! I love the small, short, intense battles. OOh! OOh!
2. I am searching for a repository of sl/asl scenarios. Mr. Speaker and I had a quick e-mail discussion about this, to little end. I also preferred SL etc. to ASL, although I prefer Combat Mission over any of the others. I would appreciate any direction to places where I could find scenarios.
3. In an assault QB I was the british and had 75mm arty. The Hun had 2 panthers and a bunch of infantry. He brought the Panthers up with infantry on either side. Hmmm, I thought, I'll suppress the inf. with the arty, and charge the Panthers with two Shermans and a Stuart (on the other side). Well, I killed one Panther with a Sherman and lost all the tanks. Killed the other Panther with the artillery. On the replay, it looks like the shell went right onto the hatch. Better to be lucky than good sometimes, hey?
4. Fear in the Fog is my favorite stand alone. The two Patrick Ware minis are my favorite campaigns. Now, about that Hitdorf on the Rhine from SL. Where did you get it? Is there a master file of all the SL (or ASL, etc.) conversions? I would dearly love to play a few (read that ALL) of them again.
5. I love the signature lines on our posts. Some identify the origin of the signature, some do not. I would love read some explanations and reasons for why we chose what we chose. Mine is the what i thins is the funniest line of dialogue from the great movie Casablanca. This movie was made as a factory, formula studio film in 1940. One of the writers is quated as saying, "If we had known we were making a classic, we would have paid attention." I am looking forward to the replies. ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
6. About 20 years ago I was playing the original Squad Leader. I tried to explain the appeal of wargames to a liberal friend of mine, who is anti-war in any form or for any reason. An unrealisitic, yet admirable goal. He said "That's terrible. You can actually kill soldiers. I replied "Cardboard soldiers do not leave cardboard widows and children." Gamey solutions are part of the deal. It is a game, and as such winning is more important than survival. In actual warfare, survival is far more important. There is also evidence that, is some instances, crews of damaged, destroyed or immobilized vehicles did fight on as infantry. The thing about the jeep rush tactic, is that the crews would most likely have refused or performed badly, thus rendering it useless IRL. ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? 7. Great idea, an expansion pack. I have home internet access, but I don't use it very much (Having a wife, child and life doesn't give me much phone line use). Perhaps BTS could include a nice list of good CM websites as well? Has anyone notives the prices bidding up on this thread? The first dollar amount I saw was 20, then 25, then 13 pounds, then 30 dollars. Personally, I'd go 25, but we'll see if it actually happens first.
8. I love bad movies, and like Captail Foobar, I have seen the same bits and pieces over and over again. I always seem to turn it on at exactly 27 minutes in, and then again about an hour later. Does anybody know how it ends? Who wins the war? Do the heros survive? How about the viewers? Should we send it the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys? I have yet to play any e-mail games, but I don't mind learning. I always plan to win, but as we all know, the plans go out the window. (registered trademark, service mark, Microsoft Corporation. Thank goodnes I am a MAC user.) send me an e-mail and we'll see what happens. Contact me later, after you have given away all the good stuff. I have CM, I don't need any other software. ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
9.
quote:
Originally posted by IntelWeenie: A lot of people here seem to look forward to huge armored behemoths slowly clanking across the steppes blowing up everything in sight, but I can't wait for the early war "clash of the midgets" (as a good friend of mine calls it) Anyone else looking for a good BT-5 BBQ? (or PzKfwIII roast for that matter)

See, that's right. I agree. In my post yesterday I was talking about "clashes of the midgets" (LOL, BTW). I love that stuff. Where ROF and maneuver are far more important the sheer brute force. Of course, that's just my opinion..... ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? 10. I subscribe to Mac Addict magazine, and the demo appeared in the fun and games section of their monthly cd. Now, no jokes about my being a mac user-I own a pc also (old, slow, bad), but I prefer the mac system. So lay off. (A pre-emptive strike, as it were.) I was a Squad Leader player, and am only learning the history of CM form this thread. The Close combat series was "supposed" to be the electronic SL, wasn't it, until Atomic had those problems a few years back ('95, maybe '96)? Well, I love CM, and I won't go back to that other game! ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
11. Hey! My first smiley! Don't worry, I won't use 'em too much.
12. The Eastern Front is where the Big war happened, and I, for one, am looking forward to simulating it with CM2. I am also looking forward to an earlier time frame. Big guns that kill easily anything in their field of fire are cool, but no so cool as a well executed flanking maneuver in order to get your puny 37 millimeter cnnon a flank shot on a T-34 or MkIV. Also, I'm also dying to model SL's Hill 621 scenario. I mean, 48 squads running 400 meters through a wheat field (at best) against good machine guns will be a sight to see from ground level! I am mailny interested in the earlier time frame ('39-'42), so desert, steppe or Dunkirk are all in my future, and yours! ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? 13. Too much CM? Is that possible? Perhaps it is just the sleep deprivation talking? I do think about how to assault the building across the street from my store, though. (Cover MG fire, smoke in the street, and go through the woods on the left side, but watch out for mines.) ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
14. I'm also a CM newbie, although I've been a wargamer for 20 years, almost all at the tactical level. I have found, in brief experience, that the AI is a weak opponent. That is not to say that I have tried expecially hard to make it tough. I will try to play against more units with more experience to see what happens. What occurred to me while I was taking the Americans apart during the Wiltz scenario that I had just totally defeated the Germans in as the Americans was what happens when I play a human? I can't wait! I'm not sure how much time I have for PBEM yet, so I'm not really looking. I also want to get better at the system. Really looking forward to CM2 and 3. Really, really really want to see the Soviets! ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
15. Bridge on the River Kwai is one of my favorites, portraying leadership that most people can only watch in movies. Patton (except that both sides use the same, modern armor. M48's?) Full Metal Jacket Saving Private Ryan How about the Seven Samurai? No mention yet in this posting, and a truly great movie. This was remade as The Magnificent Seven, a western. Also a great flick. ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
16. I just got the full version of the game, and have had a lot of fun. As to the question of killing superior armor with a zook (I called them "gadzooksas" when I used to play Squad Leader), only from the side is any kind of a kill even remotely possible. I got a Panther from an elevation (hiding on a wooded hill), but that's about all one could expect. Make sure you have infantry cover. ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
17. 40, dudes. Oddly enough, I still get a kick out of the same stuff from when I was 25 and playing solitaire Squad Leader. But the new stuff is soooo much cooler. Plus, now I have a child. How will I find the time to play enough CM ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
18. Help! I can't order throught he website. I get a message saying that I must have an old address and that I must be a registered customer. I'm registered to post here, I think, and I really really want to order the game, backordered or not (I'm patient). Any hep out there? ------------------ Ugati: You despise me, don't you Rick? Rick Blaine: If I gave you any thought I probably would.
