  1. Ive been looking for a thread like this to reply to.... I read in the most recent book about Michael Wittman that he trotted down the street in Villars Bocage machine gunning HTs and carriers in his Tiger to save his main gun rounds. This had the effect of knocking out many of said HTs and causing others to explode! Im not too terribly sure what MGs were in Tigers and Panthers at that time but im mighty sure that is was something less powerful than a 42.. yea? This is why i can never figure out why turn after turn of peppering allied HTs w/ an mg 42 hardly ever results in a knock out or even abandonement. Even at close range I have seen HTs go about their merry way amidst constant HMG fire. I guess i can see how it may be relatively impervious from the front.. but the sides and back would be more vulnerable. Any detailed accounts you guys out there have that say otherwise... im quite anxious to know... tnx Zaff'
  2. Thomas... very funny you mention it being odd to play against one's own country. I almost always play as Axis and have not the slightest hesitation about brewing up platoon-fulls of Shermans and Stuarts And im American!!!! well, no one's perfect Actually, I do it simply to hear the enthusiastic "JA!!" afterwards. Its fun to play as Axis IMHO because it raises greater challenges to do more with less. I love defence QBs where i have no uberpanzers at all but am faced against a force at least 25% greater than mine with only a few AT guns, p.schreks and inf guns... Its very rewarding to pull these battles off. Being able to pick off a group of tanks reminiscent of a turkey shoot is always fun too regaurdless of what side your on... I just find that this mostly happens against the allies Zaff'
  3. Im not on the forums too often, and i hate to turn up old stones.. but i cant help to wonder why Fionn cant post here anymore?? Did he go off on someone??? Zaff'
  4. My advice to see a good example of CAS in action is to play the scenerio Haminkeln. I had a pbem w/ a guy and saw it used a little too effectively. First... He got my last panther w/ a bazooka halfway into the battle... then about turn 16 or so... the CAS comes in and takes 2 passes at the KOed panther (where hes got a platoon positioned by now). This panics his troops and delays his attack for the hill.. it then comes in and knocks out the remainder of my half tracks... I guess it made at least 7-8 passes in toto... A little extreme if you ask me.. but it was pretty amusing to see it confidently go after that dead panther and take out a few freindlies.. thats war i guess, Zaf' -not a speck of cereal- FZ
  5. Everybody just better back off of Elijha Meeks nice n easy like. He's the only philostopher on this forum, dontchya know? He's also a Jewish comedian on cable that has a rather unique routine with a baby seal and brass rings...
  6. Nice arrangement... the front cover might be able to stand for a more pronounced foreground subject (i.e. one of the tank images up CLOSE) though... Im a graphic designer tho so im a real picky-ass... my 2 sense can be ignored... Zaf'
  7. Man... 8 megs is worth those tiger textures alone!!! good job, buddy!! I must ask everyone though... I just got the velvet grass and cant decide whether i like it or the original hi res grass from the 1st mod pack better. The new velvet grass and environment mods definatly add more color to the whole picture... but the green in the 1st mod pack was very... 'grassy'... whats you all's open-yun??? Zaf'
  8. Master of Debates.. now hear this!! I once took out a camoflaged gun tractor with 3 shots from a firefly... those fireflies are very tough customers if you ask me. So the K Tiger vs the Stuart really doesn't suprise me at this moment.
  9. Ok... does everyone here (at least the ones who crave the ultimate realism) leave the detailed armor hits on or off?? From what im getting here it seems like a gamey feature. I always thought that a tank crew would be able to tell if they achieved a gun hit.. There were some good optics in many tanks of that time... Im also assuming a 'gun hit' is a shot that penetrates/detereorates the mantlet or barrel only! The detailed text just mirrors the crew's interperetation of what kind of hits they take and make. What all of you guys's take on this?? Zaf'
  10. Elija Meeks... isnt he a famous jewish comedian on cable??? Props with the unicycle n stuff like that?? real short..... kinda looks like paul simon....
  11. Bazookas and schrek teams varry from scenerio to scenerio. Ive had a shrek on the 2nd floor in a night QB firing DOWN on a HMG carrier about 40m away.. out of 3 shots, every one f*%@#ing missed!!! i know it was at night and all, but his LOS went out beyond 150ms!! still, on other scenerios mine AND the AIs AT teams will either be dead-eye dicks or cross-eyed mongoloids. What peaves me most about the whole issue is the factor of suppression. I had a HT in pbem game about 150m away from a lone bazooka squad. This HT, an SS squad AND another HT from farther away was pelting this lousy bazooka guy in a foxhole... took one casualty, didnt even duck or anything, just stood upright with his tube poised like Arnold Schawzenegger in Commando. Let the 3rd rocket fly and nailed the HT.. this was w/ 3 MG 42s going to town on him!!!! That about did it w/ my impression of AT teams being modeled realistically. Again.. these incidences are few and far between.. but some of them just really get to you... i wish this issue (at least suppression) would be tackled w/ at teams sooner or later. Im a patient man though.. so I wont get hot under the collar 'Zaff
  12. Ehhhh.. All this talk of booze and fine liquers rouses my appetite for a different form of comfort... especially durring a hearty exchange of arty and MG fire. What beter way to DULL the senses than with a little bit o' that mean green! the purple herb.. the red haired wonder... yess, a lil' mary J can calm one's senses quicker than any bottle of granny's moonshine. Though i must say... its important to not engage thyself too liberally for not only will one's senses dull but so will one's coordination.. not the path to go when coordinating a battalion of Panzergrenadiers! So when your feelin fine after a fine puffin', seein a wave of your infantry go down to HE fire aint too big of a thing... let the next one get em... its only lunch time, man... ya got plenty o time... Hey wait a minute.. ive had a column of panzers back here this whole time.. we can throw those guys in the mix too... it all makes for a bloody yet groovey good time. Zaf'
  13. Hey all... I was wondering if there are any of you that are lonely on the PBEM circuit and neeed a good learnin' in tac combat!!!??? I live in the eastern US and preferably am looking for someone on this side of the globe (preffereably Tuscaloosa, AL - dont ask me why)... not knockin the rest of you guys.. its just that time zone differences make a... difference. ANyone interested??? so thats: SWM seeks aggressive SP PBEMer (18-60 yrs old) for various combat adventures.. very open minded and wiling to learn new tactics. box# 6996 Zaff'
  14. PE to me was pprobably the biggest dissapointment in terms of ww2 games ive played.... It was consistant and fairly solid in terms of playability.. but when it came to the gunnery, i dunno - maybe i was retared - i just could not get it down.. it seemed so damned inconsistant. lock onto a sherman at 1000 meters and he gets ya in like 2-3 shots everytime.. if you actually score a hit, you waste like 7 shots... missing a target would mean you compensate for range which would just be so hit and miss i eventually gave up. and unfortunatly, playing the game w/out being teh guner just takes the fun out of the whole experience. If you can get it for cheap, go ahead and splurge, but dont get your hopes too high... ;( then again.. thats just me talkin.. some people loved it and its 100 hr learning curve.. Zaff'
  15. Thnx so much for the info... I (amazingly)have some of those books you mentioned.. though alot of my others pertain to the eastern front (CM2... hurry up!!!! I guess ill just whittle through a few of em and see what catches my eye first.. I did recall checking a book out at the lib about Whittman... damn cool book at that... one piece of action i'd like to depict is his last less-than-triumphant stand at... uhh yea.. Anyway.. do you know if thats been done before?? I have looked in the CMHQ and ASL battle site and havent seen anything related... I keep having these cool ideas but am afraid they have all been done already... good researching pays i guess. Ill let ya know what i come up with.. perhaps you have the time to test a scenerio or 2??? BTW, just got done w/ your Elsdorf battle - awesome stuff, lemme tell ya! keep it up! Zaff'
  16. Looks like an M10 or something got a few good ones on his turret side there... Ill take it, btw stinky6@earthlink.net Was that an actualy camo scheme used??? Zaff'
  17. I just installed the full sound mad dog mod pack and am wanting to change some of the replaced sounds to the original ones... I didnt see any index of any sort in the zip file and for reasons unbeknownst to me you are unable to play them on a standard wave player. Im looking to simply replace all the explosion noises and thats it. Any clue as to going about this easily??? Zaff'
  18. I would be interested in playing too... I loved the Chambois scenerio!!! very action packed... re-post w/ your email, son... Zaff'
  19. Kellys hero is always a classic in the realm of 'Horrah - go - get - em' American spirit movies... but another good classic many negate that also was put out by Hollywood is Cross of Iron with James Cobourn... A must see!!! Forget about lookin for KH... go for this one.. Unfortunatly you may be lucky if you find it in any given video store as well. Zaff'
  20. (sung to the pop song "I come from the water" by I dont know who) "I come from the 'Natti!! I get weed in Kentucky!! I come from the Natti.. the Natti, the Natti" Little inside joke... pay no mind: Cincinnati, OH; USA The heart of the heartland - the Midwest... Ahhh, the smell of cow dung in the morn. Zaff'
  21. I will definatly have to check those Spike Millagan books.. I have never heard of them.. Hope you can get em here in the US. As far as terrain details are concerned: -coke cans lying here and there from sloppy, lazy GIs -Cigarette butts everywhere - name one ww2 movie where there werent 4 people in any scene smokin one. -Broken bottles of Warsteiner left behind from retreating german soldiers -And finally... horses.. gotta have horses. Didnt the Germans use lots of horse drawn carriages n guns?? thats my .oo2 sense worth... Zaff'
  22. Maddcatt, you are very luckky indeed... Of all the places in Deutschland to go.. I hear Bavaeria is die beste!! Munchen ist der shisse!! On a more serious note however, there are alot of third reich tours (in Munich esp.) but dont expect to be able to talk to many Germans about the war. Many of the WW2 yours are given by German speaking Brits and Americans (thats what i heard). But there IS a willingness on many German's behalves to avoid the topic altogether.. so beware mein freund. OH.. ONE MORE THING!!! Go to the Eagles Nest near Betchesgarten!! That was Hitlers old villa.. you know, the one where you see footage of him, Speer n Eva Braun?? Well.. turns out.. the Germans are SO willing to forget about it, that they turned it into a RESTAURANT!!! cant say I blame them... Hope you get this before your trip... Viel Gluck!! Freuliche Reisen!!! Zaff
  23. W. Bill... Do you just read a few pages on the battles and get a feel for the terrain in your head.. then go with it? or do you just weigh the odds together and come up with a general idea based on the location of the battle??? Same with units?? do you research alot in finding the EXACT number and types of units that participated or not?? I think i would want to be more picky with making the terrain as accurate as possible and not worrying so much about the correct number and type of every unit that took place in the battle... that seems like it would take a loooooottt of time... Whats your strat??? Zaff'
  24. Uhhhhh... I dont think girls dig the war thing, man. All my friends that are girls pretty much know there was a war between 1939-1945 between Japan n Germany vs The world.. n thats it. When i start goin on about its history or about watchin war movies.. they look at me weird.. it amuses me. Oh well.. we all have our peculiarities.. Zaff'
  25. 23 and 3/4... Cant bare to think of the kind of wargames that will be out when im 33 3/4 Zaff'
