  1. mac at work- pc at home mac 8 pc 6 [This message has been edited by RokSS (edited 02-27-2001).]
  2. I had done a quick test to check for the garbled text which wasn't fixed. I should say after more time using the new driver that there is a definite improvement in framerates in CM as well as CStrike and Nascar4. Life is good.
  3. I second that opinion and feel the need to bump this important thread up. (I'm trying to get this "junior" from under my name after 7 months)
  4. Yea right, and the real GI Joe didn't fight no maniacal supervillians in some cobbed-up contraptions. He fought for freedom against.. uh.. the enemy. And besides, he was lucky enough to be the same scale as Barbie. I mean so he could drive her dune buggy when he wasn't fighting for freedom.

  6. Not familiar with eaon flux. Must've been after my time. Actually the Sarge was more like this guy- Is that really you Russ?
  7. My name is a variation on the name of a comic strip character created by me and a friend some 20 years ago called "Sgt Rocksoff: the only real hero". My favorite episode was when Sgt Rocksoff straps a mine to the top of his helmet and crawls through the blood and muck and gunfire across the battlefield to intercept the dreaded "haunted ubertank of the SS!". Of course the massive tank runs directly over him and explodes into a thousand tiny fragments. As the story ends you see a closeup of the semi-decapitated Sarge with just his mouth and a stogie in it saying: "Good thing I wus wearin mah helmit!"
  8. Just finished a TCP/IP game which was fought a full 30 turns to a draw. A few quotes from the chat- my opponent: "HAHA mowed em all down like pigs!" after he mows down all 8 squads I ran across a bridge. me: "woohoo snuck that zook in eh?" after running into a building and taking out a passing KT with a bazooka. me: "oh baby broiled bratwurst!" as we both watch flames from my Sherman Croc wash over his Tiger and it explodes in a glorious fireball. my opponent: "you fag!" gotta love it.
  9. Hey thanks for the tip kking. I'll sift through that site and see if there's any other fixes I haven't tried yet. When I first built this machine the Geforce would freeze constantly until I installed the updated VIA 4in1 drivers and the AGP 2X registry patch. Still it will lockup in CM when playing large scenarios and text in the CM control panel and unit info is usually illegible. I'm running Detonator 6.31 drivers right now. I even salvaged my 2 old voodoo2s from my old machine to run glide apps and they work perfectly. As I said, I'm getting a Voodoo5 to try out and I'm betting it'll solve my CM woes. The best part is that if I like it, my wife will pay for it as an Xmas gift. What a gal! ps- anybody interested in buying a slightly used Geforce and/or 2 heavily used voodoo2 cards?
  10. RAM,RAM,RAM, the most cost effective upgrade there is! Add more ram and you should see a good performance boost immediately. I am posting because I have an Athlon 600 with a first generation Athlon motherboard and a Geforce256. There are bugs associated with this combo and I've not been able to solve them all so I would caution you about buying a Geforce if your mobo is over 8 months old. Im getting a Voodoo5 5500 tonight to try out for free. I'll get back in a day or 2 and let you know how it compares to the Geforce.
  11. I agree with Deanco et al who feel it adds yet another aspect of realism. You get a bit of RTS urgency and pauses to check out the action. Hotseat games took way too long IMHO because of micromanagement and the one at a time sequence. The TCP addition is flexible and well implemented. I crashed to the desktop once during a battle last night. The autosave worked perfectly and we were back in action within two minutes with no moves lost and finished without a hitch. BRILLIANT! With any other game- you start over. Thanks a ton BTS. And BTW I want to thank Deanco for the latest interface mod. It looks great and I think the new typeface solved some garbled text problems I was having. RokSS
  12. Why would Intel come out with a new Pentium version which has a marginal (if any) performance increase over the P3 that they've been pushing hard for the last few months? It looks like a familiar strategy of theirs to make the high end buyers think they're getting the fastest cpu no matter the cost, while giving the impression that the P3 is a great value just because it costs less. Back in '89 I bought my first PC with an Intel 386/33 cpu. I thought it was great until I installed Red Baron. It ran so slowly, what a disappointment. Not satisfied, I shelled out the $$ and doubled my ram to 4mb (wow). RB ran only slightly better. Still not satisfied, I looked into cpu upgrades for my anemic 3 month old clunker which Intel rendered obsolete the day after I bought it. Intel cpus were in the 100s of $$ so I opted for an AMD 386/40 (about 30$) and a Cyrix math coprocessor (about 70$). Now RB, SWOTL and whatever else ran as smooth as I wanted for a couple of years. Eventually I wanted to buy a new computer. Of course back then 99% of new PCs had Intel cpus. While researching price/performance issues I discovered that Intel's 486sx line of cpus were actually fully built 486 chips with the FPU disabled. They "retarded" the cpus, which cost no less to manufacture and sold them at a lower price. I used them at work and they sucked. I ended up rebuilding the old 386 with a new mobo and an AMD 486/dx2/80 and have been anti-Intel ever since. Intel has used a sophisticated marketing strategy for many years to dupe millions of $$ from buyers who just see that label. I think that if it weren't for AMD, we'd be discussing the latest P2/400sx cpu bargain priced at $700 or $800 right now. [This message has been edited by RokSS (edited 11-25-2000).]
  13. Well done KMan, I'll see that you get a citation for this.
  14. I really appreciate that the CM CD installs on PCs and Macs. I use a 21" Seiko on my pc at home. It's over 10 years old and has a trinitron tube. Unfortunately it maxes out at 1024 X 768 res but with a Geforce and hi res mods CM looks awesome and FPS games like Cstrike and UT on a 21" monitor are the bomb. At work I use a Sony 520gs on a 400mhz Mac G3. Resolution goes up to 1920 X 1080 @ 75hz. The wires are barely visible and you don't even notice them unless your looking real close. Compared to the Geforce and Voodoo2s in my pc the ATI Rage Pro in the Mac is junk, but you can crank the resolution way up and see a bigger view of the game. Saves a lot of scrolling and camera work. You can't go wrong with Sony or any make that uses trinitron tubes. They are built to last. The bigger, the better.
  15. The ol' rope a dope. Muhammed Ali used it to lull opponents into a false sense of security to steal the victory in the final rounds. I recently lost a PBEM QB in which I had controlled the VLs throughout the game until last turn. With about 3 turns to go, I was so confident that I advanced beyond the VLs to wipe out the enemy, who I had figured was ready for the knockout punch. I was in shock when Sturmgruppe squads emerged from wooded areas (which I had hit with arty and MG fire the entire game) and took both lightly defended VLs on the final turn! Lesson learned: once you take those flags, make damn sure they're secured for good. QBs with artificial time limits/ the existence of victory locations which determine winning and losing/ VLs which don't make tactical sense in relation to the map/ setup zones which include VL locations on one side in meeting engagements- all unrealistic and gamey by nature IMHO. Rope a dope or desperation rush strategy- not unrealistic or gamey (actually very commendable if it works) IMHO.
  16. Old AQ2 player here. It was the most fun FPS mod ever... until the script cheaters and bots took it over. Makes me wonder what will become of CM when TCP/IP is out for awhile. Strafe-jumping Panzerschreks and snipers with headshot scripts? Goddamn cheaters always find a way.
  17. I told my Panther G to move out into a street and then hit reverse to the other side while keeping his front towards the enemy. As soon as he pulls out, an AT gun hidden about 300 meters down the street starts firing. The first shot ricocheted off the front turret and destroys a 20mm flak vehicle I had parked behind a nearby building. The second shot apparently knocked a track off the Panther, it started doing doughnuts in reverse right in the middle of the street! The AT gun took another 2 or 3 shots that hit and finally hit the rear and the Panther blew up real good.
  18. Yes TCP/IP A.S.A.P. If for no other reason than it was a promised feature and it is overdue already. Not really griping though because I just want it to work right. Hopefully it will include a timer and teamplay would be the bomb! another James Brown quote: "I don't know karate but I know caraz-e!" [This message has been edited by RokSS (edited 09-26-2000).]
  19. I've had pretty good luck with FTs by saving a couple of arty smoke rounds to use when I'm ready to move into a village which is defended. Bring up infantry and take up positions on the perimeter while slowly moving and hiding the FT(s) behind them. Call in the smoke and wait for it to shroud the area. Keep some infantry back for covering fire, move some infantry in to assist and just walk the FT in amidst the confusion. The FTs aren't accurate but when you can get them into town you can flush defenders out of buildings and create mayhem. 20. I've had cable since last October and it works great about 99% of the time (real heavy rain knocks it out sometimes). I get pings down in the 20s in Cstrike and UT. It's a big advantage in FPS games. Built a new machine about 3 months ago with an Athlon 600, Geforce 256, 2 voodoo2s, 128 mb ram, 21 inch monitor. It takes anything I throw at it. So bring on that TCP/IP with TEAMPLAY ! Pile it on baby!
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Juardis: (I would LOVE to see my QB map BEFORE I buy units). But I see the flip side to this as well. That is, you have what you have and you fight wherever you meet the enemy, be it good terrain or bad. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> It would seem more realistic as HQs would have maps and airiel recon photos to refer to before sending in troops. I was thinking that it could be optional, like with a enable/disable switch.
  22. This thread is good whether BTS reads it or not. It is interesting to see what other players' pet peeves are. My top 5 (including added features): 1- scurrying (indentified) crews drawing too much attention from MBTs 2- inability to veiw map in QBs before purchasing units 3- improve vision, accuracy and lethality of sharpshooters (they're supposed to have high power scopes) 4- full length movies (would be awesome) 5- TCP/IP including team play capability (a no brainer)
  23. Ah ha, 3d sound is in this version? I'm only running 2 speakers right now cause I swiped a pair for my TV. I'm hooking them back up right now. AWESOME!
