1. Skoonj, I have exactly the symptoms you describe, but I got there a little differently. I have: Windows XP Pro Athalon 1.8g 750 mg memory GeForce 2 Pro DirectX 9 I re-installed CMBB after a long hiatus, only to have it run VERY slowly (1-2 fps). As suggested on this forum, I reverted to the 28.xx version of the detonator drivers, and that solved the slowness. However, the stop with bell thing you described began happening. Now, since I did not run the game very long at the 1-2fps speed, it is possible I had the problem then and did not know it. I have since installed about 5 different versions of the detonator driver, including the very latest, 45.20 from 3dGuru.com. I also ran Detonator R.I.P to remove the leftover bits of the detonators. I have also disabled FSAA, and anything else I can find. No joy. Other important Data: My system runs MANY other games just fine. I recently installed DirectX 9. I am beginning to suspect that this is not a video driver issue. It could be directX 9. I installed that during the hiatus, and it's the only system wide change that I can think of, other than joining this box to a domain. I am reasonably sure this is not a hardware issue. This is my main developemnt box, and it is rock solid, showing no problems AT ALL other than CMBB puking. Any thoughts? Jody
2. Sure would like to figure this one out. Got my nifty new dell Inspiron 8500, with 2.2 GHZ p4, 600mb memory, and a radeon 9000 mobility gpu. Now I know this system isn't going to light any fires, but I do get about 50 fps on Battlefield 1942 at high res, for refrence. CMBB is a slideshow, unplayable. I went to the dell sight, and downloaded the only previous version of the drivers for the radeon that they had posted. Installing them made no difference. Neither did going into the gpu setup and turning all sliders to the performance end (vice display). Again, no effect. Any ideas? Any notion of other drivers that might do the trick? Thanks, Jody jody@jodysworld.net
3. Oh get off it. Low member numbers do not wisdom impart, as evidenced by the above post. New players => More Sales => More Revenue for BFC => More cool games like this. Being a butthe@d to new players => Fewer referrals to friends => fewer sales => FEWER cool games like this. So ease off, NOOB! [ October 29, 2002, 05:55 PM: Message edited by: Leftwing66 ]
4. Bump! I would really love to read something about good machine gun placement as well
5.
quote:
Hopefully this will get a full measure of attention in CM2 when they re-write the engine.

It seems to me that I have read several remarks by Charles to the effect that CM2 (CMBB) is NOT an engine rewrite, that will have to wait for CM3.
6. Some time ago I followed a link to someone's excellent page full of Hampsters at war in WWII. I have lost the link, and was hoping someone could repost it here. Sorry to have to post here asking, but honest to god I tried every other way I could think of to find it. I did a search on this forum, and left it going for an hour on a T1 line, with no joy. Thanks Jody
7. I am just getting a feel for the DYO battles, and I am curios what people think about the balance. What is right level of advantage to give to an attacker in an attack scenario, player skill being equal?
8. You're in luck. I believe that this has been addressed. IIRC Charles said somewhere in an earlier post that bunker resistance to artillery had been substantially increased, and my own very limited time playing the release version seems to bear this out. Perhaps people who have played some artillery intensive scenarios would like to comment?
9. I just read the flame war one thread down, and even though it had a productive end, and even resulted in a little clear thinking, the thread title alone was unnecessarily damaging to Steve & Charles. What they have accomplished is nothing short of amazing, and well beyond the skills and talents of most of us. I am a proffessional developer, and I know for sure I could not have done it. It is particularly galling to me when the 99% of the things that went right get forgotten in the rush to blame the 1% of things that went wrong. Being a free speech fanatic myself, I have always thought the cure for speech I don't agree with is lots of loud speech that I do. So to counterbalance a negative thread topic, I offer this one forth. [This message has been edited by Leftwing66 (edited 06-21-2000).]
10. Captian, the word you are looking for is integrity. It is a precious thing, it something that many times in your life will be the only thing of value that you have. It will determine how people treat you, what they think of you, and in the end what you think of yourself. Integrity is what holds you up, what makes you strong. Every time you lie, you whittle a bit of it away. Every time you cheat, you lose a little more. Each loss is small, often unnoticible. Each time is easy to justify as "just an added bonus." Yet there comes a day in each of our lives when we must face up to what we are really made of, how much of this "integrity" we have. One of the terrible things about our culture is that the young are convinced to ignore the advice of the old, and thus each of us are forced to stumble blindly along. You are hearing people here tell you to make the choice not to cheat, to preserve your integrity. I would hazard a guess that many of them speak from hard experience, have learned the hard way what integrity is worth, and what it costs when you find it lacking. I have learned that lesson. When I was young, I cheated on some exams in college, I lied easily, and was generally pretty dishonest. I can tell you from personal experience what a slippery slope that is. Each choice to lie, or to cheat made the next one that much easier, until it became a habit, and then a way of life. I have paid a high price to regain my integrity, and I cannot begin to tell you how bitterly I resent those early choices. Listen to the people in this forum. They are walking down the same road you are, and are telling you what lies around the bend, the one that you cannot yet see around.
11. I know what it is to sit back and watch others have all the fun, so here is some more. This is from [This message has been edited by Leftwing66 (edited 06-19-2000).]

13.
quote:
Originally posted by von Lucke: Hey, Leftwing! I keep clicking on the "Play Scenario" button and nothing happens! Your version of CM is obviously broken! Tell ya what, you send it to me priority overnight mail, and I'll see what I can do about fixing it for ya...

Yeah, I'll get right on that!
14. Justification is a powerfull thing. See, I'm not really wasting time at work with this cm thing. I'm supposed to be learning interdev anyway, so this is good practice. Yeah, that's it! Practice! [This message has been edited by Leftwing66 (edited 06-19-2000).] [This message has been edited by Leftwing66 (edited 06-19-2000).]
15. Maximus, where in St. Louis do you live? (I am in O'Fallon, work in Westport, and got mine today.) Perhaps we could get together for network game some day.
16. O.k. Maybe just one more (addiction is a terrible thing!)
17. Ok here's a little more, then I have GOT to stop screwing around with this and get back to work. First, a shot of the scenario list (first page only, there are more) and yes, I couldn't resist installing it my work machine, and yes it is DOG slow in software only mode. Second, more on the manual. It looks pretty good. It is very reminicisent(sp?) of the manuals Atomic put out for their V for Victory games. Largish type, but full of content, and well written. It includes a tutorial, and a section on map-making techniques. 18.
quote:
How is the manual bound?

Standard softcover binding. Seems to be well done.
19. Take a page from Clausiwitz. All large organizations suffer from friction, and no more so than the USPS. Shipping time is dependent on many factors, and I am guessing that distance to be shipped is but one of them. I would speculate that others might be what routing through the system the package took, processing efficiency at various nodes in the system etc. Perhaps one of our online postal employees could offer some more educated words on the topic.
20. Got mine today. I am in St. Louis, and pre-ordered about 3 weeks ago.
21. Well, a quick update anyway. I came back to my cube to find the postman had left me a lovely little suprise! (By the way, I preorded only 3 weeks ago, so there is hope for all you late comers.) The package is just the manual with cd enclosed and shrinkwrapped. The manual is 171 pages, and looks to be well packed. I will tell you more when I get the thing installed, if you are interested. Looks I will be taking off early today
