4.
quote:
Originally posted by Mike Oberly: 'Stealth'?That's quite humourous. The XXI U-Boats would not possibly have played a factor at that point in the war, even if the Germans had a bushel of them. They couldn't even fuel their tanks, let alone 'luxuries' like U-Boats.Or jet fighters, for that matter.

We are assuming that Germany had not fought Russia and had had 4 years to prepare for D-Day. Given this assumption, there would have been plenty of fuel left. Are you familiar with the stats on the Type XXI U-Boat? It certainly would have changed the nature of the Atlantic war if sufficient numbers could be produced. Which would be the case given 4 years without fighting the Russians. As for the stealth fighters and bombers being humourous... Have you ever seen a HO-229? Have you ever seen a B-2 Spirit? Notice any similarity? Is it merely a coincidence that engineers from Northrop Grumman spent several months at the Smithsonion Institute studying the HO-229 while they were designing the B-2? I suggest reading "The Horten Brothers and Their All-Wing Aircraft" and "Secret Aircraft Designs of the Third Reich" before you find Germany's stealth aircraft to be so humourous. I'm sure you'll be quite surprised at how far ahead of their time many of the German aircraft designers were.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by CavScout: Germany was never "close" to the A-bomb. Germany, and no other nation for that matter, had the resources available to put into such a project other than the United States. Even the British turned over their materials on their research as they had no way to effectivly implement an atomic program.

I disaggree, according to the Farm Hall transcripts Germany was technologicaly close to producing a bomb in 1941 (9-12 months away). However, the scientists involved in the project, most notably Werner Heisenberg, did not really want to produce an atomic bomb and focussed their efforts on a reactor instead. On several occasions they outright lied to Albert Speer as to their knowledge on how to make the bomb and the amount of U-235 that would be needed to do so. Had Hitler or Speer placed more emphasis on making the bomb back in 1941 Germany certainly could have made one.
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by PzKpfw 1: quote: --------------------------------------------- Anyone saying the Allies couldn't win without Russia, which this point was refering to, over-looks these weapons. --------------------------------------------- Anyone ignoreing the importance of the other nations contributions or downplaying it isn't going to see my point either. So let me understand this, Germany conquers Russia, their is no atritional warfare for 4 years, their is no bulk commitment of German troops in the East, the US sets back waits till August 1945 & nukes Berlin and waits for someone to sighn the armistance.

Germany wasn't that far away from producing nukes of their own. Four years without war and they very probably would have had them. They already had the V-2 to put them in, the HO-229 (the first stealth fighter/bomber, a prototype saw combat in late '44)would have reached mass production and the HO-18 (a stealth bomber with a range of 7,000 miles) would have completed the prototype stage. Let's not forget about the Type XXI U-Boat which had just begun mass production in the last months of the war... Things would have been very different if Germany had had a few years without fighting the Russians.
 7. I once almost managed to take out a jeep with a Jadgpanther... hey, that jeep was armed with a MG though! He could have scratched my brand new paint job. I don't think damage from 50 cal MG fire is covered by my insurance policy... Luckily I was near the edge and I could reverse off the map.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by Oberst Angsthase: i would like to see the figures modeled so that you had 1 figure for every 3 men. US squads would have 4 figures. HMGs would have someone feeding ammo belts into the gun. HQs would have a radio operator with the commander.

I like that idea. For the record I use +1 scale and no bases.
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Airborne: Most of my jumps were from 800 or 1000 feet. Combat SOP is 500ft with no reserve chute......

What height did allied airborne troops jump from during WW2? I seem to recall reading some where that the Fallschirmjaegers used to jump from as low as 200 feet... of course the down side was that they were unarmed until they recovered their containers.
 10.
quote:
Originally posted by Sgt Steiner: Hi Mind you I may be biased as I have it on DVD VHS and (dont laugh) Betamax I also own said book & the soundtrack ! Sad really when you think about it !?

Does the DVD version include any extras? I highly recomend the DVD versions of Das Boot and Stalingrad as well.
 11. 29, My girlfriend keeps telling me that men turn old at 30. So I've only got one more year to be young... Then I guess I'll have to start counting backwards. Of course I tell her that women are old at 25 so she's going to join me in two years anyway... "Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?" "I think so Brain, but where are we going to find a duck and a hose at this hour?"
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by ACTOR: I don't know if you can destroy a bridge with a satchel charge or charges...haven't tried it.

I've tried, can't get the engineers to use their charges. I've tried ordering them to fire on the bridge at close range (10m and and then 5m when that didn't work)and all they do is fire their rifles at it once. No satchel charges... I know this has been brought up before, but I for one would like to see engineers be able to demo bridges. I realize that you need to put the charges in the stress points to properly destroy a bridge, but you should be able to at least damage the bridge enough to make it impassable to vehicles with a satchel charge or two. You can destroy anything with enough explosives even if they aren't placed properly. Not sure exactly what satchel charges in CM represent, but I assume it's about 25-30 lbs of TNT. Sure that's not going to do much if you just throw it on top of a bridge, but if you put one or two under the bridge against one of the stress points (even if you don't place the charge properly for maximum effect) it would at least weaken the bridge. Even if they just made it so that engineers could only destroy wooden bridges I'd be happy.
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by Phil the Dill: I just finished playing the same opperation and won it without facing any resiestence (with the exception of the pillbox in the first turn). As soon as you get your paratroopers into the heavy buildings next to the bridge you've won. By the end I almost had all my squads in those heavy buildings, the crouts never made it past half way. I'd hate to play it as the germans: as soon as you loose one of your vehicles crossing the bridge they become an effective road block for your other vehicles where you just sit there to be picked on by piats and gammon bombs.

I played it through as the Germans and the Brits never made it within 3 blocks of the bridge. By the 2nd night I had pushed them back to about 6 blocks, and on day 3 and 4 my armored cars and halftracks loaded with panzergrenadiers were roaming the city mopping up the few survivors... Personally, I can't see how the Brits stand a chance in that campaign. So of course I'll have to try it from the British side now.
 14. I ordered mine the day it was released and received it two days later. But then I live only about 100 miles south of BTS...
 15. I tried making a scenario where two Elite German FJ Platoons, a HMG, and a 75mm RCL ambush an American supply convoy (a bunch of trucks, some transporting a green infantry company, some towing guns, some "empty") guarded by a couple MG Jeeps and an M8. But no matter what I try I just can not get the AI to play this scenario. I set up the map with a single road going from west to east, which runs through a very narrow valley and very thick pine forrests (ie the ONLY way across this map for vehicles is the road). The Americans start on the west side of the map, and the east side is marked as an exit point. No victory flags at all, so the only way to get the points is to exit the map. Which they are given 20 turns to do, with a pair of M5's showing up on turn 8 to assist. The AI won't even start advancing till around turn 15, and even then it refuses to drive down the road. It insists on attempting to drive through the very dense pine forrests, which of course it can't do... Even playing as the Americans doesn't work, because the German AI refuses to stay in their foxholes and wait for the convoy (even though they are rated as Elite). So by the time the convoy does come through the valley ambush point there are no Germans with LOS so the convoy rolls right off the map, neither side having fired a single shot 80% of the time...
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarmo: I've been desperately trying to find a good german vechile to use against infantry. In the process I've been losing a whole lot of them, mostly to grenade launchers. What was it with germans making everything open-topped!

If you're still having trouble with infantry try the StuH42, that's what it was made for. German open topped vehicles were never intended to get that close to infantry.
 17. One of these days (nights) when I feel really ambitious I'm going to try converting the map from Red Barricades. I figure I'll be done just in time for CM2
 18. I stumpled across this website last night while surfing around... www.members.home.net/tavares/index.html Check it out, some pretty impressive stuff in there.
 19. For movies I'd highly recommend "Das Boot" (Direstor's cut), "Stalingrad" (director's cut), and "Cross of Iron". Get the DVD versions if posible, then you can choose between subtitled or dubbed (and widescreen of course). Speaking of "Cross of Iron", does anyone know where I can obtain "Steiner, Das Eiserne Kreuz" and "Steiner, Das Eiserne Kreuz II"? Preferably dubbed or subtitled in english. DVD prefered, but VHS if not available. [This message has been edited by Red Dog (edited 07-12-2000).]
 20. I agree with Scott, let the AI handle the crews. Personally, I tend to just ignore bailed out crews. Usually they'll head for the nearest cover when they bail out and 9 times out of 10 I'll just leave them there for the rest of the game. Unless I'm falling back, then I'll have them withdraw with the rest of my troops.
 21. More than likely the gunner had been hit. I had this happen with a Wasp today.
