1. I know there are quite a few German speakers on this board, and was wondering if some could enlighten me on the names of some of the German units. For instance, I know Fallschirmjaegers are paratroops, but what is the litteral translation? Jaeger = hunter(?), what's fallschirm? Likewise I was wondering about Marder, Heer, Hetzer, Jadg- as in Jadgtiger, Nashorn, etc. I saw the Lynx referred to as the Luchs somewhere (which sounds a lot like "Lynx"), and was wondering if tanks like the Tiger and Panther are called the equivalent of "Tiger" and "Panther" in German, or were those names given by English speakers much like English speakers name Russian subs and Japanese aircraft by other than their literal translations (Val, Kate, Oscar, Whiskey, etc.). I know this knowledge won't effect game play or strategy, but for me anyway would increase enjoyment (not that there's a lack of it).
 2. A rudimentary search of the 90,000+ (wow!) postings did not yield an answer to my question(s). Events: 1. Target artillery strike, 2 minutes estimated for arrival. 2. Artillery falls on unhappy soldiers, soldiers flee from trees to woods. 3. Plot artillery shift with green line to woods, 1 minute delay estimated. 4. Change mind, move artillery plot elsewhere before hitting "Go!", blue line, 3 minute delay. 5. Don't like 3 min delay, move back to original plan, 4 minute delay. 6. All subsequnet shifts have 4 minute delay, still before pressing "Go!". My questions are: 1. Why did my first blue shift estimate more time than the first time I called on the artillery (3 minutes instead of 2)? 2. Why did subsequent orders to shift (all done in one orders phase) jump to 4 minute estimates? Comment: To add on to all the other "It would be nice" requests, I feel it would be nice to be able to shift an artillery strike, and if you don't like the estimate, shift back to the original strike with no delay (of course within the same orders phase only). Perhaps that is too much power in the player's hands, but maybe not?
 3. Perhaps my settings are incorrect, but it appears that my voodoo 2 will not show transparent buildings or smoke, even with "transparent buildings" turned on, and "full smoke effects" turned on. I do see fog, large billowing clouds of non-transparent smoke, and my occupied buildings are invisible except for the roof and floor. Is there any way to get transparencies, besides forking out more video card cash?
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by RMC: BTW, modeling an elite like this would be rather difficult dontcha think? How do you treat "green" rangers? Somehow I don't think treating them like green regular infantry is the solution.

IIRC, the D-Day Rangers had never seen combat, thus would be "green" as far as experience. Also, they were a volunteer force, which by definition is an "elite" force. I'm not sure if CM is set up to model a unit that is both "green" and "elite". How does one model "a volunteer (highly motivated/trained) force that has never seen combat"? Maybe it does not matter that much and averages out to Regular US Infantry 44.
 5. What would Russia have to gain from striking the US? I would suggest that even though they are somewhat still separate from the global marketplace, the huge shock of the US (and probably Canadian) economies cascading around the globe would leave them far worse off than they are now. In addition, I believe the loss of North American food production would place the majority of Russia (and most of the world) in a state of starvation. Not to mention the poisoning of the environment will likely affect other food production centers and fisheries. Not to mention the majority (if not entirety) of the world would likely have a great hatred of Russia for such an act. Not to mention the retaliatory response from the US, Britain, and France (and others?). If you believe that Russia conquering the nations of the Middle East and Europe would make up for all this, think of the hard time Russia had with the Chechin (sp?) wars. Wouldn't you think countries like Iran, Turkey, and Germany would be able to put up even greater resistance? I am no political scientist or military strategist, but I'd say the guy is a quack.
 6. Yes, the MDMP definitely enhances the game in my opinion. I enjoy the pretty graphics, but what is a must is the updated sound. The creator's really did a good job, whoever they are (Steven Speilberg? ).
 7. Somewhere I've read that there are several AI "personalities", such as aggressive, moderate, and conservative. I believe this because I've had defensive battles where I was wondering if there was even an attacker, to battles where, after a methodical advance, the AI launches wave-like attacks that eventually swamp me. For the most part, I think the AI is excellent and fun to play against. I have noticed, however, that it seems to choose shorter paths more than safer paths when near an objective flag. There seems to be a point in every scenario where the AI says "Screw It" and makes a mad dash with everything it has.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by IntelWeenie: Every historian worth his salt knows that "biggest" doesn't always translate to "most important" or "most interesting". I will give the SOVIETS their due, they had a really hard time, losing something like 20 MILLION people (incl. civilians).

To get an idea of the magnitude of the Soviet contribution, in addition to looking at their casualty figures, examine the casualties they inflicted on the invaders. According to Stephen Ambrose, 9 out of 10 Germans killed in WWII were killed by Soviets (I don't recall if this figure included civilian casualties, my guess is it does not). Even though the Western Allies may have contributed more than 10% to the conquest of the Axis through strategic bombing and other means, it appears they only contributed 10% to the hardest part, killing enemy soldiers.
