1. Hmm, doubt this will work, but I keep seeing individuals posting looking for a PBEM, and obviously it would be an advantage to have there always be a thread for them to check for games, without constant, individual new threads. So, for those who are not scum, and therefore do not choose to look for games in the Peng Challenge Thread (aka Cesspool), maybe a very nice, up-to-date thread to find games on would be of value? If it was kept on the main page? For this to work (properly), anyone accepting a challenge here needs to check out the time and date of a poster's request for a PBEM. This info is readily apparent. It might not be worthwhile sending a setup or file to someone who posted 6 weeks ago looking for an all night opponent on that specific evening. This is an experiment, let people who want a PBEM post here for it. And I, someone who has no life (other than the Peng Challenge Thread™, and that's not life, laddie) will attempt to keep this topic bumped up and visible, and current. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. Kicking this one to the top because I too would like to hear any news about a new Reynolds book. Also, PawBroon has, until the apparent arrival of Scottish auxiliaries of a tender nature, also been subject to his own benevolent vindictiveness. It has, everything else aside, improved his Scottish accent (now there is a freaking scary thought). ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 3. MadMatt, may I just post for er...well, no particular reason right now, my thanks for the work you do for this community, your sense of humour, and thanks for the many times I've seen you be positive and helpful on this Board. I don't always get around to thanking some of this community's stalwarts. Now, for no real reason, it occured to me to do so. Also, thanks to the demon modmakers, the scenario daredevils, and all the little wizards. And thanks to Peng. Don't know why, actually, as he's a pestiferous toad who beat me in a PBEM. But thanks to him anyway, as well. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 4.
quote:
Originally posted by coralsaw: Thanks for replying Seanachai Good point, but that's a different problem solved. I believe rarity of units was dismissed as a factor during unit purchases. I also agree that both PBEM opponents have symmetric information. IMO, if we are trying to emulate real WW2 post-Overlord era, intel should be more powerful and the map should be known beforehand. Germans knew the terrain they occupied, and Allies had immense observation capabilities. Regards CoralSaw

I'm sorry, but I still don't see the problem here. You do have astonishing intel at your disposal when placing your units, and before you ever move them. What you do not have is the luxury of saying: in this part of the theatre we will not bother with armour, or longer range mortars with minimum ranges, because we might not be able to meet those ranges. And not everyone dismissed the rarity of units when buying them. The point on rarity is the same I'm making here: it doesn't matter if there were only 100 whatevers actually produced: if you have one here now, you're going to have to figure out how to best use it. Unit commanders in the Vosges sometimes had Shermans attached to support infantry units that were fighting in terrain wholely unsuitable to tanks. They still had the tanks. They still had the problem of how to use them. At CMs scale, the commander is not in a position to say: this terrain is not suitable for tanks, or 3 inch mortars, or whatever. Those are the units available to them (and you do have some info on what the map will be like, and are able to make some choices as to what troops you want to use to take it on). But no real life commander had the option of saying: we don't have good mortar sites here. Leave those behind and buy a couple more medium MGs. I do understand your point, it would be a huge help when choosing units to know exactly what the terrain would be like. I think the answer to this, though, is not to see the terrain before you choose units. I would vastly prefer the option of importing a map created in the scenario creator into a QB. Otherwise, I'd say create a map yourself in the scenario engine (or have it create a random one for you, same as the QB generator does), choose units for it, and go ahead. Of course, you won't be able to use any of the QB generator's randomizing factors, unless, of course, you run the QB, make a note of what you're handed in terms of weather, time, etc, and then apply those choices to the scenario you're creating. More work, sure. It will get you to the same point, though. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. They told him nothing, except that the sky might fall on their heads.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by coralsaw: I am sure it has been discussed before, but I was clueless in providing clues to the omnipotent search function, so pls bear... In QB, I would very much like to see the map before buying my equipment. Doesn't it make more sense? Wouldn't a commander know the terrain upfront before committing resources? Pls bombard me with arguments to the contrary. CoralSaw

There is something in what you say. I know that I would have bought very differently if I'd seen some of the maps I was going to play before hand. But JPinard is also correct, you do have some idea of what you're getting in to, and that that should affect your buying to some extant. Again, you're right in that a commander about to fight over the terrain would have more of an idea as to exactly what he was facing. But that doesn't necessarily mean he could then choose the perfect troop/artillery/vehicle mix to deal with it. You use what's present, not what might be ideal. Commanders about to attack steep tree covered hills didn't have the luxury of saying, heck, this armour is almost useless, let's send it up to Holland and see if they'll send us more infantry. In the game, you have at least some idea what terrain you'll be facing, even if it's only a rough idea. Neither your opponent in a PBEM, nor the AI, will have any more idea than you do. So both of you are forced to use what you've got. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 6.
quote:
Originally posted by jpinard: Brian, I'm not sure either. In their e-mail's they just said they didn't want to: 1. Brian, sorry about calling you an idiot. These are straight from their e-mails, so this is why I said strong-arm tactics. I never made a fuss, as I was glad to get the mods and not have to wait until he got around to posting them.

While I would give a nod to anyone who's 'integrity' wouldn't allow them to compromise the confidences of others without their permission, I also have problems with anyone who has no qualms about casting doubts on another person's 'integrity' while using as their only evidence 'quoted evidence' from sources they 'cannot' reveal. I do not suggest that you are a liar, or that you've manufactured your claims. But your sudden show of disappointment with, and attacks against another member of this community (and that only after a number of more or less opinionated attacks by others), rings hollow with me when the whole basis for it is 'evidence' that only you possess (and, frankly, that we are only seeing your interpretation of, whatever the evidence might or might not be). This is not honourable. Without knowing who the individuals are, without knowing what in fact was said, why they said it, what they meant by it, etc. etc., then a very large number of people here are expected to judge Madmatt on the basis of out of context snippets of info that you interpret for them from unrevealed sources, and your interpretation states quite baldly (forgive the pun), that Madmatt lacks integrity. I do not buy this, and I question your motives for doing so. I would hesitate to impugn another like this on the basis you've used. Frankly, and in my opinion only, perhaps, you do yourself as great a disservice as you're attempting to do to Madmatt. You are only throwing at him the mud you are standing in yourself. As for your general comments, I have problems with some of your arguments. What, exactly, can Madmatt possibly be using as a means of 'strongarming' people? His displeasure? It's possible, but I can't remember ever seeing Madmatt get on anyone's case on this board; even when they were way out of line, he more often used humour than abuse, I've never seen him make any attempt to 'get' anyone or discredit them with the community. Indeed, in many threads I've seen him show up and make sincere efforts at peace-keeping. So what could he do if not try to 'get even with them'? Not host their Mod? Who cares? They can find other places to host them, put them up themselves, or just forget about it. Are they receiving any real remuneration for doing these mods? No. It's not like they're endangering income or anything if CMHQ wouldn't host them. So, in the end, it probably boils down to not wanting to endanger their 'relationship' with Madmatt. In your posts, you've been at some pains to point this aspect out as though it involved something more disturbing than 'Matt will be irritated with me'. If I give, share, or tell something to a someone, whatever my motivation or expectations may be, and ask them to let it go no further, and they turn around and immediately pass the same on to someone else, then I'm going to be irritated with them. I was recently given a scenario to beta-test/play for the hell of it, and asked by the person who gave it to me not to spread info about it all over the Board, as they were not the creator, and until it was released the creator didn't want the scenario discussed or spoiled. I've kept it to myself (and still am). I didn't try to attribute dark motives to these people, and I could ask myself what real harm I'd suffer if I blurted out everything that had anything to do with the scenario. But I also figured I didn't want to piss off the scenario creator, nor the person who passed it on to me, not because I feared dark retributions or reprisals, but because they'd have been angry with me, quite rightly, because I'd have behaved like an arsehole, having gone back on my word not to do something that I'd told them I wouldn't. I never doubted for one second of any of the time I've gone to CMHQ, with it's advertising banners and such, that the people running the board were making some kind of fee for running the board. I also seriously doubted that it was their only job or source of income. Do I feel 'betrayed or used' because Madmatt, or Fionn (and I'm sure TGN is getting their money, by the way), were making a dime off my visit? Nope. Has Madmatt ever 'held back mods in order to increase hits?' Couldn't venture a guess, and wouldn't give a good goddamn if he had. My universe doesn't revolve around the availability of mods, and the presence or absence of said free, user-created ehancements wouldn't make the slightest ripple in my day. Given that Madmatt constantly posts as to the availability of such things, if I'm interested, I'll go check them out. If they're not there, it won't disrupt me in the least. Is Madmatt manipulating these things to increase his hits? Again, I have only your 'intrepretation' as evidence of this. Even if it was completely, totally, and shamelessly true, I have no doubts that Madmatt is a longtime and serious supporter of this game, and I'm not in a position to compromise my sense of outrage about the horrors that surround me in the world by striking a noble pose on this issue and decrying the worldly cynicism that such a betrayal of my 'hobby' implies. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. Cheers Olle

You're right, and sometimes the search engine is a little cranky. Not to mention that you get a return of topic headings that sometimes make no sense whatsoever. And then it's very useful to just say: I tried a search on this, but my question is this, and I can't find anything about it, or at least I'm not sure how to find out what I want to know. Could someone help me narrow down my search, or suggest a thread that would help? You might not get an answer, but you most likely will, and I can't imgagine that anyone (other than one or two cranks) would get snotty with you about it. No one is refusing to help people here, I've seen tons of people go out of their way to try and give some info to people's questions. For the most part the "this has been discussed before" response does not, in my experience, come up about every aspect of history/game engine/game play. It's most likely to be trotted out when new arrivals want to rediscover the wheel; in other words, discussions that cover no new ground, and most specifically, discussions that stridently 'ask' (demand would be a better term), that their expectations about how things should work be met, and that their pet feature hasn't been implemented. On that note, what is it about Airborne landings that you want to know? If you've done a search on that topic (which isn't specific enough for me to know what it is you're looking for), and haven't come up with an answer, than post your question as a new thread, with the disclaimer that you've done a search, and your specific question is x, and that you didn't find anything. You might, and I say, might, get a person, maybe even two, who'll only post that that's been discussed before, and offer nothing further. More likely, you'll get people trying to help, some might even offer a URL as to where it's been discussed before (provided it has), and some might say they don't know, but what an interesting question. If you've done a search on a specific question, and couldn't find your answer, then ask. If you've done that, asked your question, and rather than help you, people have said 'go do a search', then please share with us what that question was. Is there a specific issue you've had where you couldn't find the answer and people not only didn't help you, but dismissed your question? Tell us now, and I will personally do whatever I can to help find that answer, and stir up other people I know here to do the same. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 17. Frankly, I've always loved but had trouble with those strange party games that ask: If you were castaway on a deserted isle, and could only have 10 books, 10 cds, 10 movies, etc., what would they be? Sometimes it's hard to say. Now, in the case of what computer games would I want, that one becomes incredibly easy, as this would be my first choice, without reservation, and that would be out of a field of five, rather than ten. The other games would be just to round out genres. 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Steve Clark: Slap, that's exactly the point I was going to make. I have done a number of searches and sometimes after doing so, I still had to ask my question because I wanted to phrase it in a different way, thus getting slightly different answers. If someone really insists that such discussions were fully elaborated on before (as in quite a few cases), then post some URLs. Doing a search, for example, on FOW yields hundreds of threads, some relevant and some not. It would be of immense help to those asking old questions that for those that participated in earlier discussions, point to such specific threads. My 1 1/2 cents.

You know, I just saw someone do just that. They posted every URL concerning previous discussion of the issue (which was a complex one), they posted a number of things that others, including BTS, had said about the decisions made on the issue. All the tools and info were there, but they didn't just post a yes/no answer (that would have left all the whys and why nots unanswered). Four posts or so later another newbie got on all bent out of shape and asked why no one had simply answered the first person's question. How does one win in these situations? I agree that if you can find the original discussion and post it, that's a good thing and a great help (especially as people who've previously read the thread might be more likely to remember that it was actually discussed at length under some topic header that had little or no apparent relation to the discussion). Several very good 'revisited' discussions have occurred lately, and contributed to the game (MG effectiveness comes immediately to mind). But I think most of the 'people aren't being helpful' points are being raised about threads whose core discussion is: I want, I want, I want, and when replied to become I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, and loop back to I want. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. 19.
quote:
Originally posted by KiloIndiaAlpha: I still a newbie and I don't know if this has been asked before but why can't the crew of a heavy machine gun (eg MG42) run. The only thread where I completely lost my temper with someone, and refused to go back to it. Never did find out how it ended. TelGerot, I can't add much to what's already been said here except that if I see an easy to answer, quick question, I try to do so. On more complex issues that have been discussed innumerable times before, I'd most likely be giving you an 'as I remember' answer that might miss essentials or get something slightly wrong. So a search will often turn up much better info, as well as (in many cases) giving people more insight into some of the people who post here (I've learned a lot about people who were on this Board when I arrived by reading old threads, as in who was knowledgeable, who was a snide crank, who was helpful, who's short tempered, etc.). And even though I have only been here since May, I have already seen a number of concepts that were discussed to death previously be discussed to death again, and in the last few weeks I have seen even these resurrected, sometimes in multiple threads at once, and stridently debated by new arrivals. When people point out that they've been discussed before and some of the conclusions reached and the reason behind them, you often get variations on the reply: So what, I wasn't here then and I don't accept that, and I want it changed right now. Most of the time all you can do then is walk away and wait for the inevitable flames and lock down. And lately, as soon as a thread is locked down, there are several individuals who decide it was some sort of personal affront, or part of scheme to 'suppress' them, and their posts in other threads become increasingly inflammatory, strident, and even abusive, with the trumpeted attitude 'they don't want to hear what I have to say'. After a while, they're right, almost no one does want to hear what they have to say about anything, and they've brought it on themselves. These people are in the minority, but they are posting the main body of 'discussed to death' threads, and figure significantly in every thread that gets locked down for whatever reason. They are also the people quickest to land in a thread where someone has been courteously told to do a search, and start spraying spittle about 'why can't anyone just answer the question', or 'hey, we can discuss this again till the walls crumble and you shut up'. The result: it appears to some that newbies aren't being helped and that there are attitudes towards their questions. After all, there's not much drama in a newbie question that's quickly answered and sinks to page 5 in 24 hours, as opposed to one where the 'defenders of newbie rights' start shouting about 'conspiracy', and 'oppression' and 'FNG attitudes', and whip the whole thing up into'attitudes' wars. I have seen newbie questions treated brusquely, and some people are a little short with them. But I think that's the minority of cases. Keep in mind that the 'old-timers' too are starting to get a little short tempered when every time they try to give some idea of what's been said before, they are accused of 'holding the party line', or 'putting down discussion'. In general, I think people are making too much of the half dozen people on either side of this who have a problem, and that most of the problem threads involve a handful of 'hot button' issues that discussion of is becoming increasingly unwelcome. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. You're telling your men you want them to go from here to there as fast as they can, ignore everything else. Peng and I are playing a game in which my newest, least favourite tactic is: The Rush of the Exploding Halftracks. And it's a completely clear day. Drive to beat hell towards a position (whether with AVs, or merely infantry), and you can watch your HT or Squad basically park on top of a foxhole. 'Course, it turns into an illumination round almost immedialtely thereafter. What you're telling your troops is: Go like hell towards such and such location. What you want is: "oh, but if you suddenly encounter something unexpected, drop out of 'going like hell mode' and become 'maximum warriors of death'." It's not going to happen (at least most of the time). Try running flat out, sometime, focused on where you're going, and fearing death, and having someone throw a snake at you. Chances are you scream, fall to the ground, and do nothing, or scream, knock the bugger aside, and keep on going (while firing uselessly in all directions). In either case, you don't suddenly drop to one knee, assume a steely gaze, and kill all those who oppose you.

Ah, Peng, my lad, thank you for the er...attitude adjustment. All done through the use of humour, no one got flamed at all, at all, and everyone good as new! If we can just keep a good and positive attitude, I'm sure we can all make Combat Mission whatever, 1 through X, a wonderful bit of work for everyone. Let's keep in mind, people, we're actually all friends here, and dedicated to this game. Good lord, what a jolly bit of fun! I was in danger of losing my sense of humour! ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared. He got at least two good responses from people who were able, or at least willing, to help. Like many of your other posts on this forum, you chose to use an 'in your face, border-line abusive, pissoff' response. Do you have some kind of chemical inbalance, or are you just here for a fight? Either way, I'm beginning to think you're a good candidate for someone who's overstayed your welcome, and are edging towards the banned list. Personally, I don't much like confrontation, but that seems to be all you're after. Why don't you climb down off of it, and try to be a member of a 'community', rather than a pit bull. ------------------ After witnessing exceptional bravery from his Celtic mercenaries, Alexander the Great called them to him and asked if there was anything they feared.
