  1. Good question. I've often wondered this myself. One thing I have noticed, however, is that you'll never see two items with the same designation in service at the same time (IE the M1 carbine and M1 tank). Could be wrong on this though...
  2. I agree that a series of events culminated in the Axis defeat. An analogy is an airline crash: Rarely does a single problem result in a crash (the exception being a bombing!). Rather, a series of problems occur and compound one another with the result being a crash. I also think some historians have made it clear that while the US Industrial might made a big contribution to the defeat of the Axis, it wasn't decisive in and of itself. Remember that 9 of 10 German soldiers were killed by the Soviets. I'd argue that the Axis were defeated by American industrial might combined with (practically) limitless Soviet manpower. I'm not trying to marginalize the contributions of American (and other non-Soviet) GI's; both of my grandfatherss fought for the US. I just think that many people underestimate the contributions that the Soviets made. Granted, their contributions were made possible in part by weapons made in the good ol' US of A
  3. Hey, I shelled out $45 + S&H, so if anyone else wants CM, they had better too! Consider this my signature on the pledge.
  4. Murx: Are you referring to the M113 chasis that the US first developed during the Vietnam War? I didn't realize that the Bundeswehr used them as well if so...My armor company (1990's) used M113A3's as 81mm mortar platforms - and grouped them into a single heavy weapons platform. A lot has changed with the composition of mechanized units since WWII, however, so I can't comment on whether that was the norm back then. I do recall stories of this taking place in WWII. EDIT: I should point out that I was in an American armor company (my handle has confused a few people already). [This message has been edited by Mannheim Tanker (edited 06-11-2000).]
  5. I usually have it in the background at work (T1 line), and check it if I'm waiting on a process to finish. So - I end up checking it several times a day during work hours. I usually only check it once in the evening and not very often on weekends. Dialup modems are a pain
  6. Guachi: I tried your advice last night (with both the massage AND CM). Great results. Thanks a ton!
  7. Windstarz: The way UBB operates, you can determine which forums have been posted to since you last visited (they're indicated by a "lit" light bulb). Of course, on a really busy forum, that light bulb is usually "on". Less busy forums (maybe a tech support forum, for example) will not have as many updates, and therefore may prove this to be a useful feature. Regarding the "Spoiler" police...appointing a moderator or two can help in this. While the Mod doesn't have full Admin priveliges, they CAN help keep things somewhat orderly. You can avoid the "Gestapo" effect if you choose a fair Mod that doesn't abuse his/her power too much. Again - appointing Mods could actually free up some of Steve's and Charles' time - so that they can work on CM2!
  8. Actually, it's not really that hard at all to keep people on-topic. That's what Moderators are for - and it works on most of the sites that I've seen that use a multi-forum format. The best part, is this could actually REDUCE the work for Charles and Steve, as they could appoint a few trusted souls as Moderators of some of the forums that are less relevant to BTS (eg Fionn, Madmatt, or some other long - not old! - timers). By less relevant, I mean OT and other non-technical threads. A separate forum for the OT would be a great compromise, since THAT shouldn't be too difficult to keep straight. Right now, half of the threads tend to be OT, and take up a big chunk of time to sort through to find the game-relevant material that I'm really looking for. EDIT: Forgot to thank you, BTS for your prompt reply. I agree that splitting off the tech support WOULD be a good idea. Thanks (One more smiley sent to the Eastern front) [This message has been edited by Mannheim Tanker (edited 06-09-2000).]
  9. First, I'd like to say that I absolutely love the UBB package - I use it myself at work. I'm NOT trying to reopen the "oldest thread" that discussed the merits of UBB vs the old text BB. Now my question: I never really got an answer to the question about having several forums available on the CM BB. Is there any support for having a few (maybe half a dozen at most) forums devoted to different topics. I think that this would be a welcome way to deal with OT, spoiler, and tech support threads that we sometimes like to skim past if we're in a hurry. I know that it's quite easy to administrate/activate (just a matter of clicking a few buttons on the UBB Administration screen). Is there any reason to NOT have this feature, BTS? Thanks for your answer - whichever one it may be. NOTE: All smileys were spared from this post by sending them to the eastern front.
  10. Well - I guess WarDogzzzzz certainly told us! I really like the UBB system (we actually own a copy at work for communication on large, group projects). Despite his childish comments, WarDogz did make one good point: There are a lot of threads on the board each day, and it can sometimes be difficult to find what you are looking for. My suggestion would be to subdivide the board into a few forums. For example, have an OT forum, tactics forum, pbem forum, tech advice, etc. Many/most other sites (including ours at work) use several forums to make things more manageable. BTS could even appoint a few "trusted" souls to moderate some of the forums (eg Madmatt as moderator of a "Mod" forum). I've proposed this idea in the past once or twice, and it was summarily dismissed by the few people that managed to respond to it. Can anyone point out the drawbacks to this? The only one that I can see is that you might have to "browse" though a few different forums if you're not looking for anything in particular. The up-side is that you don't have to skim over irrelevant posts if you ARE looking for something specific. Waiting for comments with bated breath NOTE: ONE SMILEY WAS FORCED AT GUNPOINT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS POSTING
  11. I usually rush through it as quickly as possible to get to the fun part, but sometimes she makes me give her a backrub first...oops! Didn't realize we were talking about CM here
  12. Even if the CD's aren't in his garage, we can at least burn a copy off of his hard drive
  13. This calls for a pass-in-review of the 1st Smiley Brigade: [This message has been edited by Mannheim Tanker (edited 06-08-2000).]

  15. KoP, everyone in this thread has made some great points. Other than reiterate everything that has already been said, I can add that CM really amazed me when I realized something. I spent a few years in the Army, and while I never experienced combat, I have a good handle on combined-arms tactics training. I've found that if I use "gamey" tactics, I find my self screaming at the screen in agony as my troops get slaughterd before my eyes. When I started using the tactics that the military taught me, I found that I was screaming less frequently, and have even crossed my fingers behind my head in satisfaction now and again. As Black Sabot put it, use common sense, and you'll usually do all right.
  16. thomasj: When and where were you (which BN) with the 1AD? I was with 5/77 in Mannheim (duh!) from 92-94. Steel Tigers! MT
  17. Wrong answer, but you get 3 points for originality. I don't think even Goebels would marry THAT broad! LOL! answers: (if anybody really even cares!) 1. Baroness Karin von Fock-Kantzow 2. Munich 3. Feb '22 Bonus question: what would be Goebels' opinion of the lowly smiley if he were alive today?
  18. I think you hit it on the head Mikester...it really depends on what you OB is, and how much time you have to attack. If you can afford the time to sit back and drop arty on the enemy for 3 days first, that would be preferably to a quick attack with minimal support. Probably NOT the answer you were looking for, huh, Havermeyer? NOTE: ONLY ONE SMILEY WAS ANNIHILATED IN THE TYPING OF THIS POST
  19. What!? No answers yet? And you guys consider yourselves WWII experts?
  20. Hey Cyberfox! Aren't you the guy that dreams of getting shot by us in your sleep? (one smiley dead) I'm up for a CE pbem, if you are, in addition to our VoT game. Lars' video card died on him, so that game is in limbo. I'd like offense this time if possible (I consider the Ami's on the offense in CE). If you're interested, send me the setup. I'll even let you have +25% if you want it. Otherwise, I'll be content with stopping your blind charges in our VoT game! (got another smiley! 2 for 2...) Note edits for incredibly horrible speeling. 21. Joshik: Most certainly, but I think the discussion here was aimed at "military" uses of NBC WARFARE as could be applied to CM. Gassing innocent civilians is hardly a direct miliary application IMO - I'd call it murder.
  22. Here's a three part question...let's see if anyone can answer all three parts in under an hour Who was Goering's first wife? Where were they married? When were they married?
  23. Can you get some specs and textures of that toilet over to the CMHQ? It might make for a good option for the Ami's in VoT. I seem to have trouble knocking out that Panther with the Shermans sometimes, but the Super-Toilet oughta do the trick!
  24. Great job guys! Will you also be doing much in the way of new uniform textures (beyond what's already been done?) Kudos (oops - a smiley got away from me)
