  1. Thanks for the info, guys. I am having trouble downloading anything from the Compaq website, but I'll keep trying. Mike
  2. Melloj, It's a PCI slot card which I had bought separately (a few months ago) for my old Presario 4824, which was working fine in that computer. But, when transferring it over to my new 7599, I just get some power on lights (I'm not sure about the beep) and a blank monitor. I saw something at the Compaq and ATI websites about similar problems when installing an ATI Rage 128 into some older Presarios (I believe the 4000 and 5000 series). Any suggestions appreciated! Mike
  3. stodge, I noticed your system specs are quite similar to mine (Compaq Presario PIII 700). I've been having a lot of trouble with installing my ATI Rage 128 card (i.e., upon boot-up, my monitor remains blank -- nothing happens, which probably means something's wrong other than Windows). Any suggestions? Thanks, Mike
  4. Just bumping this up the list in the hopes of getting BTS's response. Thanks in advance, Mike
  5. SuperTed & V B, Thanks for the feedback. I'm not really expecting exact statistics/TOEs, but I think something generalised, along the lines of who won that particular engagement, how they did it, rough casualty estimates, etc. Of course, this `post-battle historical results summary' could be tailored to the specific situation, so the amount of detail is up to the scenario designer and/or historical information available. Mike
  6. Yes, I'll chime in with everyone else in congratulating BTS. Speaking of pre-ordering CM2, I was curious about any plans for another "incentive" to pre-order CM2, 3, etc., as in, say, another cool poster. I think it would be neat if BTS would keep with the theme of that particular CM version. For example, for CM3 covering the war in North Africa, something along the lines of Rommel's Afrika Korps surveying the remains of some British forces. Mike
  7. It hit me late last night after finishing a scenario (which I believe was historically based), that it would be neat to see how I, the player, did compared to what really transpired. In other words, has there been any thought given to displaying (e.g., in a similar format to the pre-battle briefing) the actual, historical results of that battle once the scenario/operation is completed? Obviously, this would be limited to historically-based operations, and, more particularly, those that aren't too well known/documented. Sorry if this has been discussed previously, but I don't believe I've read anything relating specifically to this before. Comments, opinions, etc.? Mike P.S. It's been stated a million times before, but I'd like to reiterate CM is quite a masterpiece! Thank you, BTS and others. [This message has been edited by mike_in_texas (edited 06-25-2000).]
  8. Yep, just got home and to my sweet surprise was the CD/manual along with the poster waiting for me! BTW, I also pre-ordered about a year ago. Now, it's time to ingest an entire can of Folgers (coffee) and play all night!! Allan & Jager 7 -- I haven't forgotten about you. I'm gonna play against the AI a little, and then you two are on my first PBEMs list. Mike
  9. Phandaal, Great news ... for you, anyway! But, being in Houston means I should be getting my CM very soon -- hopefully today! Don't stay up too late; remember, tomorrow's a working day, right? Mike
  10. Allan & Jager 7, I'm also in hot, hazy and humid Houston - the Clear Lake area. As far as PBEMs go, sounds good to me! As I mentioned, I'll be out of town till the 19th, and hopefully by then we'll all have our precious CMs in our hands. So, you two can be my first opponents. Mike
  11. CM not being shipped till next week? Although I know I'm in the definite minority when I say this, but that's fine with me since I won't be home to play till the following week! (Unless I can persuade BTS to re-direct my delivery to Japan! ) Mike
  12. I ordered about 13 months ago, and have been patiently waiting since. Mike
  13. Actually, in my second game, I actually came within one second of taking out the Panther with an ambushing flamethrower. At first, I thought my flamethrower got him, but after replaying the turn, I saw that one of my tanks hit the Panther just before my flame reached him. I like to think the crew (who were responsible for destroying four of my tanks) bailed out only to meet a wall of flame! This game rocks! Mike
  14. Although I was tempted to throw in the towel by turn 10 as the Germans, I decided to stick with it. I'm glad I did because, after the reinforcements arrived, I ended up with a total Axis victory by turn 33. My vote: A Mike
  15. In my VoT game, I vividly recall the Tac AI re-ordering my units to avoid a newly discovered minefield. Actually, I intially didn't realize what was happening when I saw my men begin to deviate from the path I ordered them along. Upon playback, I realised what happened: my point half-squad triggered a mine, and the follow-up squads had their course re-plotted by the AI accordingly. I was quite impressed. Mike
  16. Double Post [This message has been edited by mike_in_texas (edited 05-19-2000).]
  17. ++++ Spoiler Alert for VoT++++ Jager 7 & jwright, Thank you for your responses. I, too, would've preferred taking out that bunker with my engineers (if nothing more than to just see what it looks like in the game), but I lost my entire engineer platoon assaulting the concrete machine gun bunker! Let's just say I'm learning the hard way in coordinating smoke concealment with my assault. Plus, in 20/20 hindsite, it probably wasn't a good idea to attack it directly rather than performing a flanking maneuver first. Thanks again, Mike [This message has been edited by mike_in_texas (edited 05-19-2000).]
  18. ++++Spoiler Alert for VoT++++ Jager 7, Hi, I'm not in the artillery/FO business, but I noticed that the concrete bunkers are quite a tough nut to crack; it took essentially one of my 105 entire battery's allotment to finally crack the anti-tank gun bunker (crew abandoned it). I know it's just a single data point, but out of curiosity, is that atypical? I ask this so as to get a god idea of how tough these bunkers are, and if I should "waste" my artillery on them versus using other weapons (e.g., demos, direct fire, etc.). Thanks, Mike
  19. -100! Oops, now CM's score is down to 75%! Seriously, I gave CM 100 based on Lee's definition of 100 not necessarily reflecting perfection but rather CM being the best game of its kind that I've ever seen. Mike
  20. BTS, First off, excellent game despite the AI not doing what I'm expecting of it (i.e., handing my ass to me in Vot!). My question is does the smoke dissipate quicker in scenarios with "windy/rainy" weather conditions, or is the dissipation time fixed regardless of environmental factors? Thanks, Mike
  21. Black Sabot, The same thing happened to me in the Riesburg scenario, which got me to realising how important the previously mentioned tactics are. One thing I'd like to add to this discussion is to use scouts. In other words, when faced with the same situation of advancing into unknown terrain, I now split up one of my squads and use a half-squad as a scouting unit, with the remaining force proving covering fire. This should prevent the slaughter --or at least minimize casualties-- you (and I) underwent. Mike
  22. Now what would make you think that, especially in this post-cold war era?
  23. Working for NASA, I can assure you that eventually those maps will be available to the public. But, it will probably take some time to gather all the data, sort things, and then deem it acceptable for public distribution. If you'd like, I can ask around to see if there's a more specific date to expect these maps to be avaiable. Mike
