1.
quote:
Originally posted by redwolf: Up to 100m the Bazooka is more precise, above that the PIAT.

I'll second that. I recently finished a PBEM (AKotM tourney) with a disappointing score. Fundamentally, I was outfought, but: one of my opponents Hetzer's was the target of 34 (thirty-four) PIAT shots, all misses. A mixture of Regular and Crack teams, mostly in command. Average range 75 yards, max 130, min, 50. Thirty-four rounds. And my last TCP/IP game showcased a stationary king tiger (my opponent thought the PIAT explosions were 2" mortar blasts) that evaded twelve rounds, at 70 yards. Teams were regular, rested, and in command. What use is firing from buildings if they fly like a badly-thrown football? I will only use them again reluctantly.
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by Pvt. Ryan: When a Sherman goes WHOOSH nothing happens to the infantry nearby. A catastrophic explosion

Try this test: shoot at a Sherman with mounted infantry. - dead sherman, dismount with few casualties if any. - catastrophic sherman, dismount if anyone left alive. Often 100% casualties. So it is modelled for mounted units.
 3. OK, Pondscum had the best of it - a better gamey flag rush, and a better unit pick. Congrats and good luck. On a related note, I'm hoping that CM2 fixes some of the bizarre land-bridge effects, best illustrated by this picture.
 4. I was right. Turn 18, and Flag-rush it is! Sten vs. MP40, Nigel vs. Fritz. Why can't we all just get along?
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by PondScum: Just got back to turn 17 of my game vs aaronb. [...]the crew of my Patented Piat-Proof Hetzer[...]can then go on to clean up in the casinos of Berlin.

34 piat rounds and counting. This must be a record - all of them were launched under 120 meters, some a lot closer. Agreed re: voting and next round. So take PS's vote out.
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Panzertruppen maddox: [...]Big Time Software should take notice of what kind of work this gentleman is capable of. CM3 or CM4...

Beautiful it is. As for CM, notice that the first page shows the mesh he is using for the front portion of the track/bogey assembly. More polygons just in this area than in an entire battalion-level CM game. So, if you have an hour or so for each second of combat to render, great. Otherwise, we have to deal with a more cm-like model.
 7.
quote:
Hull down (vehicles only): Pick a spot on the map and your vehicle will move toward it until it has a hull-down firing angle on that spot.

My computer will never again be turned off. One less thing to micro-manage - kudos.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by PondScum: [QB]Those were PIAT rounds?! Lol - there were so many little explosions around my Hetzer that I figured it was just a fire mission from one of your 2" mortars! [...]QB]

There was 2" in the mix to create just that impression. Of course, the end result was supposed to be a dead Hetzer, not dozens of little holes in the ground. Gammon bombs to the rescue.
 9. Arrgh! One of Pondscum's über-hetzers has survived - wait for it - 24 piat rounds, none of which came anywhere near their target! No wonder the Brits needed the americans to win the war (tongue-in-cheek). No matter. I'm winning the infantry war, since his guys aren't even showing up for the party.
 10. Pondscum's TD and mine are trading shots at over 1000 metres. Thank goodness BTS chose to not model "überoptics" on his Hetzer. And let's hope the tungsten routines do their thing on my end! His arty is finally appearing, five turns to go. I sense a gamey turn 20 flag-rush - come and get it! Ambushes are ready to go. No spectacular flames this time. I opted-out of the flamethrowers due to their poor mobility - nothing PS doesn't know - if they were there, half the board would be lit up by now. Next time. Once you get used to this map, it isn't so bad, just evil.
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by PondScum: I now understand why aaronb voted for unlimited 81mm spotters - my heavy weapons section has been under continuous mortar fire for six turns...

ROFLMAO! Cheap and plentiful. The rest of your post I'll write off to psyops. Yes to duke-pick, iff he restrains his natural urges as exemplified on our current maps. IE, no 6-jabo picks with some jeeps to take the VL's at the end of the slaughter. Yes to attack/defend. Tactically more interesting.
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by PondScum: [QB]First blood in my game against/QB]

More like first oil, with the Sherman going right off! And let's not forget the followup turn, where your ambushing squads were counter-ambushed , and are now cowering, more than decimated.
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by Iron Duke: ATTENTION: I need purchases from the following:[...]aaronb

sent it 6/4/01 9:42pm. Resending now.
 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Iron Duke: So what do you guys think of your maps so far?

Pure evil. Not 'Dr. Evil' evil, but Old Testament evil. Guys, I'll post some pictures once I've soundly thrashed Pondscum. The map goes beyond gamey to fantasy. Strips of bridge criss-crossing a wooded valley that happens to be a perfect square with no outflowing streams and yet remains 'very dry'. And land bridges can't be blown, so there goes my favourite tactic.
 15.
quote:
Originally posted by Iron Duke: It is my opinion that 81/75mm arty doesn't cause the massive casualties/routs/broken's that the larger arty can cause, therefore I did not place a restriction on them. But I can easily imagine someone spending 5-8 hundred points on them and blowing up one side of the map! So once again I leave it up to the few to decide this: Should 81/75 FO's be restricted? And if so, how much? Yes No

No restrictions. The only place this would matter would be a wide-open field, or maybe total woods on a small map with non-los targets. heavy buildings and simply being somewhere else provide plenty of cover from the little stuff. And I hope pondscum picks 1500 points of 81 mm, which my ubertanks will walk through just before levelling his fo's hiding places.
 16. He must mean Last Defence (defending in front of a hill). It exists on the shipping version of CM. If you wanted to play the _original_, you'd have to load up the beta demo. It plays quite differently than the final version, especially in the higher persistence of smoke and easier spotting.
 17.
quote:
Originally posted by Iron Duke: aaronb and Wildman...I haven't heard from you two in a while...how is everything going? Going to make the Due Date? Move it out guys. (Everyone)

We did a turn yesterday, and should be able to turn some around for the deadline. Of course, Wildman could do the honourable thing and surrender. If I told you why, it would reveal valuable information - later. Currently, I'm waiting on him for a turn - hint, hint...
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Wildman: I am in a battle where my opponent has used flamethrowers to set a vital set of buildings on fire, dening my use of them. Very smart. To counter I decided to destroy these buildings to increase my LOS over the rubble.

I am flattered to be the subject of a post... as others have pointed out, flaming rubble has the same LOS blocking function as a flaming building - I tested that first. You'll just have to go around the buildings. Oh, yeah, and down snow-covered city streets with direct-fire HE waiting for you. Nevermind.
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Panzer Leader: Okay, I have found that old threads, now deleted can be viewed and saved by either finding a link that went to them, or by somehow knowing theur URL

quote:
Hack attempt logged or corrupt/altered member file found with extra fields. » Please use your browser's back button to return.

That's what happened when I tried to open the save URL of the AKotM thread. so it clearly doesn't work with all threads, if any.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by WineCape: [QB]It looks and feels like Windows and have an effertless install utility to boot (try not to be scared when it states that it needs a update in the Windows\System directory during the installation process - standard procedure that will not put in gremlins in Windows95 or 98 - just ask aaronb )

Heard my name. Yes, I installed it without a total system meltdown. And now it supports file sequencing! Time to download again! I'll be using it in the AKoTM tourney.
 21. After screwing my courage to the sticking point - and making a full tape backup with emergency recovery disks at hand - I clicked 'OK'. Pros: - convenient to just dbl-click the email attachment and get things going - no more 'save as'. - less likely to mess up the file name, since the name stays the same. - can do zipped / plain on a per-opponent basis. Some opponents like compressed, some hate it. Usefull. Nits: - it's big. This is an aestheic issue. - responding 'yes' to 'overwrite file', stemming from the lack of an incremental file number, is aggravating, and requires a surprised pause. I may get used to it. - must manually exit CM - must manually shut down CM Overall, works well, and I do like the ability to with with a MAPI client and get that record of a send.
 22. WineCape, tried it, got this message: Having learned the hard way, I would rather face a large pack of rabid, garlic-eating Chihuahuas than say 'OK' at this juncture. Win98 SE, latest 'critical updates' from MS, pretty stock otherwise. So, I'll stick with OneClick for safety's sake.
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by WineCape: How do you find the "PBEM" program, aaronb?

I had originally dismissed it because of the lack of automation (in my experience, password tracking was painful, opening/closing CM 10-20-30 times a day during a heavy PBEM day was slow). Given that it apparently now incorporates KMan's automation routines, I'll try it again on the weekend and feed back to the group. I'm the guy who bumps Kman's utility every week - I must have an emotional attachment to OneClick. The challenge will be to look at PBEM objectively
 24. How dare you insult the mighty KMan?!? I'll try it out. If it's actually better than OneClick, it must be amazing. Now if only my PBEM opponents (you know who you are) would start returning files.
