  1. I believe the driver's hatch folded down flush with the deck when fully opened- I'm sure in reality the driver would remember to duck...
  2. I am using every mod/patch/update that has come out thus far. I have not had any problems with a single one. The hi-res grass textures will slow things up, but only a little bit. I suggest you fly at it and try out everything...

  4. von Lucke: No, I did not know- thank you. Another one to add along with the Vickers would be the Universal Carrier- they could be carried by the Hamilcar gliders. Damn, not enough time to sit down and absorb all this stuff- have to get divorced, sell kids into bondage, quit job, stop sleeping...
  5. I am using every mod/update/patch/scenario that has come out- all 50-odd megs worth! The sounds are really great. No real slow downs with the ubergrass. Running at 1184 x 960 with my Voodoo 3 2000 overclocked to 180 mhz.
  6. I see what you mean- I forgot about the frozen water business...
  7. Scott: It was HIS dad- afraid I don't recall as he passed away five years ago. He was a Bren gunner- had many interesting stories to tell, anecdotes about the PIAT, the Bren, etc. My friend still has the Dennison smock he wore into Normandy...
  8. I have read that a salvo of eight 60pdr rockets fired by a Typhoon was the equivalent of a full broadside fired from a light cruiser- even a couple of hits would be enough to blow apart any tank- if they hit...
  9. SS Gebirgs Division "Nord" fought in the Trier-Mosel area in December of 1944. It later retreated back through Germany until finally surrendering in Bavaria to the Americans. There were two "Mountain Infantry" Batallions that fought in the Strasbourg area, around about the same time period. Both of these areas would fit the map description you gave. Why don't you move the period up a bit and sprinkle some snow around?
  10. I have a video tape documentary of the Canadian fighting on the Scheldt Estuary in late 1944... a tour of the actual battlefields as they are today was part of it. Some of the concrete bunkers shown had walls 6-9 feet thick, and reinforced roofs 15 feet thick. The main command centre (NW corner of Walcheren) was also located some thirty feet underground...
  11. They definitely had Vickers MG's. My friend's Dad fought with the 6th Airborne in Normandy, and had said that they were both brought in on gliders and dropped via 'chute...
  12. Hasn't been lucrative for me- cost me $80 Canadian...
  13. I read once in Normandy that a Cromwell came around the corner of a road and there was a Tiger sitting only a couple of hundred metres away. The Tiger fired an AP shot that went through the mantlet and out the back of the turret without hitting anybody. The Cromwell reversed out of danger with the crews' ears ringing... 14. Books dealing with the D-Day invasion have indicated that bombardment against hardened targets on the beacheads were not effective for the most part- the exception being Allied destroyers at Omaha Beach that steamed suicidally close in to shore and pumped literally thousands of rounds into the positions from point-blank range...and even then the 5" rounds were not always enough to destroy the targets. One destroyer, fired 1500 5" rounds alone, and returned to port with her ammo lockers empty. At Tarawa, the targets were so low, and the trajectory of the big rifles was so flat, that most of the rounds went over the island and into the water on the other side. I think the game portrays the use of artillery accurately enough...I think one of the better uses of the super calibre guns would be for making instant foxholes for the attacking infantry to hide in when attacking...especially if you only have a few rounds to use.

  16. How much you slow down depends on your hardware and the size of the scenario you are playing. If you want to have a fall back in case you don't like some of the new files, create a new folder under the main CM file called "Old BMPS" (or similar), and copy all the original bmps into it. Then go ahead and load the new textures into the regular BMP folder. If later you don't like something, change back using your copies. You can always just get them back off the CD too.
  17. Makes sense not to be able to- the truck has to hold some of the ammo, bits and pieces, and possibly the gun crew, so there wouldn't be any room for anyone else...
  18. The winter textures don't replace the summer ones- the game engine slots in the appropriate textures automatically.
  19. I haven't had the chance to drive anything over a bridge in the game yet, but I was wondering if there is a difference in capacity between a wooden bridge and a stone bridge? I suspect there isn't, as someone sent a screenshot of a wood bridge with a Tiger I on it...If there isn't, would it be possible in another iteration of CM to make it so that equipment of a certain weight are prohibited from using a wood bridge? The coding would be the same as for not allowing vehicles in woods/tall pine terrain (wouldn't it?). If you tried to plot a path over the bridge, you would get the red "no-go" line...
  20. Briefly, it was decided that checking LOS from waypoints gives more info than would have been available in reality- so you can't do it. I plot my paths, and then move along them at the 1 view, scanning left and right as I go. At the final destination, I check the position as best I can, again using the 1 view. Judging good defilade and hull-down positions comes only with a lot of practice.
  21. Super stuff- Martin, you get my vote for best CM site on the 'net...

  23. I dunno- I was disappointed when the Canadian troops hollered,"Hustle up!" Everyone knows it should be,"Hustle up, eh- you hosers!"
