1. Maximus, you spelled manure wrong in your sig.... dumbass.....
2. Elite troops can defend against superior numbers if you do everything right. Read some of Fionn's AAR's at CMHQ, you will see him using elite half-squads as front line ambush troops to great effect. They are used to ambush the frist wave recon forces of an attacking force. These squads do everything well. They spot better, their command delays are short, they dont panic too easily. BUT, they run out of ammo, and die to enemy fire as much as the next man. Use them to disrupt the hell out of an enemy attack. Ambush, fall back,do it again. Dont get pinned down. The key to winning against a superior force is to deny them information by bloodying their noses when ever they try to sniff you out. And if they decide to barge in without recon, even better. A big blind enemy is fun to kill. But watch your ammo. Watch out for useless firefights.
3. downward spiral of spelling accuracy, due to the lack of a spell checker on the new forum, leading Maximus to work himself into a lather, whenever someone happens to misspell werds lyke ultimite, and taunting Rob/1 with phrases like........
4. Look at the flames spouting from the jeep in Dave Aikins post!!! They are flying from it NOT towards the sky, but simply at a perpendicular angle from the slope!!! This is a MAJOR, and it needs to be addressed immediately. Even a total dunce knows that flames and smoke flicker directly UPWARDS towards the sky. My immersion factor has been smashed. Please fix, or do somefink. I am not playing anymore until this is fixed.
5. Jeff, Thanks for posting Part Deux.... Any word in your books about the frequency and effectiveness of the molotov vs German Armor. I got the impression from the last thread, that the Soviets mass produced them?
6. Steve, Thanks for taking the time to give a thorough reply on the MG matter. I am relieved after reading your post. I was tuning in for most of this thread just to get your thoughts on the grazing fire and firelanes specifically. Although noone at BTS has come off with the attitide that the game is perfect, I hadn't heard your opinion on the subject, and whether you thought it had room for improvement. Its sounds hopeful that the changes you are planning will punish the hell out of the "aggressive smg squad players" in CM2....
7. SpeedHump, After spelling GRAMMAR wrong, you'd be best to stay quiet..you git...
8. For a second I thought it said "Who has the smallest member?" Nevermind...

What a ridiculous arse you are. I would say something to demean you, but to say a single word, would be to break the spell of your perfect self-parody. Oh yeah, and grow a pair. Now, onto Joe Shaw: I have to say, that as Peng Thread naming goes, you suck on toast! I would expect that kind of crap from a David Aiken, or some grognard wannabe with deficient people skills.. oh wait!! That's You!!!! Piss Off, you worthless goat-pumper. And Roborat: Do you think that I "slipped up" and revealed that armor publicly on ACCIDENT? I shouldnt be suprised, your gameplay has been even more naive than that assumption. I called you out, sweetheart. SGT FOOBAR, of the free french has taken all comers. That Sherman is going to be the death of you, and I just wanted you to know it before you died. You are a bore. But at least when you get riled you are laughable, giving you some small amount of usefulness. That is all, carry on.
10. I posted this image again, because it is VERY important that we all be discussing the same points. It does no good for anyone if we have 10 different conversations AT each other, at the same time. So bear with me. This is the point that needs to be discussed directly, as far as MG effectiveness go? 1) Do MG's in CM repel the attack shown above in a way that conforms with real life? (My feeling is that it doesn't. I base this not on my own experience, but more on inductive reasoning. The more I see of THIS kind of aggressive attack, the more pointless combined arms defensive measures are. MG's should be at the center of infantry tactics, but when you face a player who has the yarbles to run his platoons all over the map like a cross country team, dont expect your MG's, in their current incarnation to deny them access to the open ground. So, again, this SPECIFIC example is the reason why I think MG's have issues. When I play against Pillar, we both play it as if we'd like to survive the encounter..a little bit conservative with the digital troops. This kind of problem doesnt come up, much. But if you play someone who likes to run all over,in open ground, and you play it conservative, they will often mow you down, without being punished (enough)by your MG's. So, if you want to respond, think about the ppicture above, an aggressive assault in open ground, maybe run your own tests. But lets all have one conversation, not 10 different ones. 12. Here is X-00's pic from last night. showing the grazing fire example he was using:
13. Originally bellowed out by Roborat:
quote:
What!!, the same sherman has gotten all your armoured kills. Well, I see what is my primary target now. not only will I hunt down that tank, I will make sure to machine gun the survivors, and run them over for good measure, then shoot them again.

Thats right honey, and it is none other than SGT FOOBAR, of the free french army! If you have any MORE Crack Panthers you dont want, I will happily brew them up as well. I could lose this battle, and still claim victory, seeing how well my namesake is doing. As they say in the FPS world,Come get some, biaatch [ 04-09-2001: Message edited by: *Captain Foobar* ]
14. I would like to point out that some of us HIGH number people wear it as a badge of honor. We were ROBBED of our original identities on the NIGHT of REFRESHING MONKEYS, and if you don't know what that is, your certainly a damned newbie, so never mind.
15. Steve, Just one more thing. I dont think your responses were fair towards Pillar. You seemed to misjudge his motivations entirely, and that seemed kind of messed up. He's one of your devoted sycophants man...I thought he was being reasonable.. Thats all I have to say about that..
16. Heinz, you said that BTS is aware of the problems. This whole conversation is about trying to understand what the problems are. I dont think I am being unfair. If I am in fault it could only be in my tone. (Judging by your reaction to my post). Let me reiterate here and now that I am a BIG fan of BTS. They have delivered in a way that no wargame developer has before, from my experience. I love this game, I appreciate their hard work. I can also say that they have a stellar track record of listening to customer feedback, and I give them the benefit of the doubt on just about everything. Check my posts throughout the last year and beyond. I am not one who has been sniping at them. I rarely take up a controversial issue here, but this one is important to me, and I want to got to the bottom of it. Either I dont understand ww2 combat on this issue, or something needs to be worked on. I approach this with humility, and I will accept that I am incorrect on the matter, based on rational explanation. BUT, I would rather not see anyone come around saying otherwise without pointing to rational evidence to the contrary. [ 04-08-2001: Message edited by: *Captain Foobar* ]
17. Steve, I went back and re-read your posts. I think I understand where you are coming from. And by the way, I dont think there is just ONE way of looking at this. All I can use personally is my own perceptions. I didnt find anything telling me what parameters to use for a fair test, and I am still interested in doing that. The situation of a MG position being charged is at the heart of the issue One of the problems with a forum conversation, is that you realise what people are getting at much later than you would in casual conversation. And I am going to try to stop beating around the bush, and get to it.. (roight) You said that CM2 will have to be tinkered with to deal with human wave attacks. I read that, and it hit me, that's what many of us are talking about. People are doing Human Wave attacks now! Thats the whole problem. I dont want to mention a certain popular ladder where this kind of wacky tactical action seems the most prevalent, but when I started encountering some of the very very unorthodox players, it threw everything I thought I knew about this game on its head. I thought MG emplacements could counter concentrated infantry groups, and deny open ground to advancing units. It does not play out that way against tight groups of infantry running across open fields at your MG's. The system is what I am getting at. You probably havent encountered it, in the circle of players you encounter, but there is some wierd stuff going on out here in CM-ville. Against conservative players, it rarely comes up, but now that I know how the system works, I find it infecting my own play behvior. So what it comes down to, is that people are doing Human Wave attacks today. It is becoming more and more common, and I dont know how to play the game anymore. Everything I thought I knew is thrown on its head, and I cant seem to use it to simulate real ww2 combat, which is what is my passion, as it is yours. I cant speak for everyone else, but for me, I am hot on this issue not because I dislike CM, but because I love it, and in my screwed up way of thinking it is being tainted by wacky tactics that the game engine does not punish.
18. Steve, This discussion seems to be going in a direction that nobody involved wants it to. I guarantee you that much. To me, the simpler the scenario of the test case, the easier it is to remove variables, and the easier it is to isolate the factors you are trying to quantify. Personally, I am not a veteran, and I am not a programmer. The only position I can speak from is that of one of a supporters., with a passion for this game you and Charles have created. I can say with all certainty that Pillar falls into this category also, and I dont like seeing the discussion come to this. So, if in your opinion, Pillar has started from a flawed premise, I can assure you with all certainly that is is not an intentional one, being used as a means to discredit you, your work, CMBO, or anything like that. Your response on the matter seems to betray that you have made that assumption. Here's where I stand on the issue. Ever since I have started playing ...certain types of players.. lets just call them aggressive and smg heavy, it has been my impression that support weapons and teams, especially allied ones are unable to suppress enemy units and fend off assaulting units in the way that I assumed would happen in real life. From my perception, it doesnt work out in a way that I can react to naturally. Pillar and I discussed that subject at length. Now I dont have any experiences to speak from, but I am very interested in the subject because I play your game almost every day. If Pillar's test example is not suitable for isolating a fair appraisal of the MG simulation, please suggest one that is, or perhaps give me a link to where it has been done. In the end, you might be sick of discussing this, it might have been dealt with a million times before. I can respect that. You don't owe me or anyone else anything for my money beyond the CD that came in the mail. But, you are not talking to an ingrate newbie to the game. You are not talking to a snobbish critic, or detractor. We are people who love your game, play it all the time, and try to spread the word of mouth to others. Food for thought.
19. That is so like you Joe. Always passing the buck. I'd like to think we are mature enough around here to leave my resemblance to members of the Spencer family out of this. Now, I am definitely enough of a commander to take this squire challenge in hand. I will send you the file, if you'd like. You'll be able to see that YOU just plain dropped the ball. That's all there is to it. I put you in a perfect location, unbuttoned, lying in wait for enemy armor. His Panther rounds the corner, and BEATS YOU TO THE PUNCH. All you had to do was pull the trigger. He was 50 meters away. Sgt Foobar was in the tank right next to you, he did everything he could to help, but there was no helping you. Your performance was pathetic. I hope they catch Sgt Joe Shaw, and send him to the Stalag.
20. Joe, dont make me puke. Definition of a guy? You???>!!! Check this out folks. From my squire challenge battle vs Roborat. 1st a REAL man. Sgt Foobar is a freakin animal, taking no prisoners, laying waste to everything in his path..Why he's killed 4 afv's so far!!! Now we go to a GIRLY man. Sgt Joe Shaw, although having veteran status, has whizzed this battle down his leg. He fell to the first enemy contact, and is seen here running off hysterically into the night. What a sad sack... Pretty telling, isn't it?
