Pete Wenman
I posted this in the scenario section but meant to put it here Guys hi Working on a scenario (or 5) where the German forces will have on map mtrs. (The map is too big for off map mortars to be in range) For a Bttn on defense. Each German Ko. has 2 mtrs in its heavy weapon plt. In relation to a defensive position where would these be located. I assume (in linear defense) they would be someway behind the main Ko. position (if so how far). Or might they be co-located with the mtrs from the other Ko.s heavy weapons plts. The Heavy Weapons Ko. then have a further 6 mtrs, and I assume these would be someway behind the main Bttn position, again if so how far? Would all 6 mtrs be close to the others, forming a "gun line"? P __________________
Magpie_Oz
Have a look at this link http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/ttt/defense-areas-north-africa.html Shows the tactical doctrine for a Bn in North Africa. This one talks about employment of mortars http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/ttt09/mortar-fire.html Maybe have a further look on that website too as there is heaps of information like you are after.
Vark
I thought the article on the infantry armour teams advance in Normandy was especially interesting, as the tanks seemed to use the tops of hedges to obtain airbursts.

Was about to check all my german TMs and FMs about mortar employment, but figured the link above gives the essentials well enough. Same on russian mortar employment, which is quite similar to german ones in 1944/45: http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/ontheway/index.html
