ToW Caen "Stops Responding"

Recommended Posts

At random times, in the menus, playing the game, changing the settings, etc., the game often simply locks up and stops responding. The only solution is to kill the process.

Details:

Windows 7 (64bit)

nVidia 275 with latest drivers

6GB RAM

Soundblaster audio with latest drivers

I have tried running the game as Administrator, but this does not help. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there another place I should check for help?

I saw another thread asking for the log.lst. Here it is:

Do you get this lockup EVERY TIME you play the game, at some point ?

I'm not sure how much of a difference this will make, but what you can try is to limit the game to using one core of the CPU. Launch the game (with the "Run as administrator") and then Ctrl+Alt+Del and select "Start Task Manager". Go to the 'Processes' tab and look for the 'Kursk1943.exe' listing. Right-click on it and select 'Set Affinity...'. In here checkmark the box next to one of the CPUs listed ('CPU 0') and click 'OK'. This should set the game to run on one CPU core and see if it makes any difference to the game in terms of stability. I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have on the performance of the game.

Yes, every time. Also, the "Stops Responding" refers to the file "Kursk1943.bin" file. Attempting to set the core affinity on either this file or the associated .exe yields only an error saying I do not have the rights. This is odd, but I can see how Win7 might have snuck something in there that limits my abilities without me being able to readily tell what it is.

Thank you for responding. I hope some more ideas are out there. I am continuing to experiment, and I am hoping I did not just flush 50 bucks :(

Here is the latest log.

Situation:

I was in the deployment mode for the first mission of the German campaign. I looked at a few units and then the program stopped responding.

Also, on a lark I found and turned off an item in the setup called "Compatibility Mode"

You may want to disable UAC (User Account Control) and see if setting the CPU affinity works with it off. Are you logging into an account that is a 'Computer Administrator' ?

Do you have any programs or utilities running in the background ? What security software do you have installed and have you tried temporarily disabling it while playing TOW ?

I am logging in as an admin equivalent account. Nothing else is running in the background except for system and miscellaneous processes.

I am running BitDefeder AV suite.

I will:

1. Do an administrative startup with nothing but absolute essentials running

2. Check into disabling UAC and setting the appropriate affinity as you suggested

3. I will temporarily disable my AV software and monitor results.

I will report back with the results. Please note, this is a new PC which is running otherwise flawlessly. Thank you for the continuing assistance.

I've fixed all my problems! When I installed Caen I made a new shortcut...the shortcut screwed everything up! I can now use the mission generator for hands on german battles!

Could not believe that something like a new short-cut could have been the source of all my problems.

Mahalo, for all the advice that was given.

Do you have installed third-party memory managers like CacheBoost?

In nvidia control panel, set either system-wide or Kursk-specific profile setting 'Pre-rendered frames' to 0. If that doesn't help, try to run the game in WinXP compatibility mode (set it in Kursk1943.exe properties and run it).

Does anybody with the same CPU (or another CPU from i7 series) have the same problems or your game works fine? The game runs normally on 920 though.
